While the 8th Air Force flew high-altitude bomber escorts, a legendary unit of P-38 Lightnings was flying low enough to taste the tree-tops & blast Nazi armor at point-blank range.

The forgotten story of the U.S. 474th Fighter Group, the 9th Air Force’s twin-engine tank killers.

Activated in August 1943 in Glendale, California, under Lt. Col. Clinton Wasem, the 474th was unique:

They were the only 9th Air Force P-38 group that actually trained together on the Lightning in the U.S. before shipping overseas.

Operating from sod runways in Dorset, England, they flew 77 air miles to Normandy, prepping for D-Day by hammering bridges, rail yards, & flak towers.

On D-Day, while others provided air cover, the 474th went hunting on the ground.

Armed with four .50-cal machine guns, a 20mm cannon, & heavy bombs, their twin-engine P-38s became a terrifying sight for German convoys trapped in Normandy's narrow sunken roads.
