There are a lot of people who think of Apollo and Dionysus to be polar opposites. They see them as siblings who can’t stand each other and that’s not accurate, at all. Apollo and Dionysus are close buddies, and Apollo has Dionysian traits as well.
- Apollo and Dionysus are called Diceros, they both have two horns.
- Before he leaves to Hyperborea, Apollo welcomes Dionysus to Delphi.
- Apollo orders his worshippers to pay Dionysus all the respect during winter.
-So basically, Apollo leaves his sacred place under Dionysus’ care in the winter months.
- Dionysus’ Maenads are present along with Artemis and Leto to welcome Apollo back to Delphi.
- In Rhodes, Apollo and Dionysus camp side by side and kill the mice that destroy the grape vines and fruits.
- Apollo unleashed a storm on a city because the citizens ignored Dionysus. He then orders them to build a temple and honor his brother.
- There is this Festival of Hestia, where Apollo and Dionysus receive double rations of wine through their priests by Hestia.
- Apollo invents Cithara because the Lyre was not suited for the parties Dionysus threw.
- Apollo is the leader, along with muses, for the chorus of mysteries of Dionysus.
- He initiates people into Dionysian mysteries. Most famous example is of his son, Orpheus.
- Apollo is an expert in mania. He can cause madness and cure it as well.
- Apollo is called Komaios, the god of Komos, or the banquet of serious drinking. He loved wine.
- Apollo and Dionysus use the medicinal properties of wine for healing.
- There are instances where Apollo uses wine to trick people.
- The Maenads would rave in honor of Apollo on the heights of mount Parnassus.
- In the festival Karneia, Apollo harvests the grapes.
- Like Dionysus, Apollo also bears a pinecone during this festival.
- Pastoral Apollo had been the nurturer and guide to Dionysus’ creation, i.e; grapes.
- Apollo is worshipped as ‘Dionysiodotes’, meaning the ‘bestower of Dionysus’ because the most important impulses to vitalize the Dionysian cults were issued from Apollo of Delphi.
- It’s true that Apollo is the bringer of harmony, and that his music is sweet and melodious, unlike the loud and frenzy music of Dionysus. But still, Apollo is strongly connected to Dionysus and his practices and traits.
Friedrich Nietzsche’s Apollonian and Dionysian maybe polarities, but those are just metaphors. Apollo and Dionysus are not opposites, they are closely associated with one another.
Worshipping both is bliss. Once one has taught you what they wanted you to know, the other comes in to complete the knowledge. They do work together.
Helios holds more appeal than the upstart Apollo, but Dionysus is always good for a laugh.
Sorry but none of the Theoi are “upstart”
