I honestly have to say I don’t think I have ever been as disgusted as I am with the TG fandom as I have been with any other fandom I have ever been in. And I have been in many fandoms in my span of all the years I have been on Tumblr since like June 2011. Now, this doesn’t mean everyone of course. I have met some REALLY great people in this fandom, but…there are a lot of toxic people too.
I just, all the hate that goes back and forth between fans bothers me. Its like no one can have an opinion or like a character without a million people just going down their throat. I have seen people get teared to shreds over people being jealous about things with someone else in this fandom. I witnessed someone having a headcanon that didn’t agree with someone else and they were a target for hate for the next week after that. Everyone is free to interpret things as they want, but don’t start shit with people because they are defending a character they hold dearly. I have seen so many things people get hate for and just…I don’t know.
I have no problem with jokes in a fandom, but once those jokes totally make a character nothing but a trope or a meme and turn them into something one-dimensional when Ishida-sensei has given a lot of depth and time to his characters, it just is not longer funny…
The hate to Ishida-sensei bothers me too. The things he’s been through because everyone just snaps at the drop of a pin to anything he does in a story that’s FICTIONAL. Just because a character does something in a story or says something doesn’t mean you look into it to the point you are calling someone transphobic or racist without any proof that they are. Fiction does not equal reality. There are things in fiction I enjoy, kinks I enjoy that I would NEVER enjoy in real-life. There are things I write with my OCs and muses that I would never wish anyone to deal with. Does this make me a bad person? No. It doesn’t and the same goes for Ishida who is making a manga that is a tragic story with deep and DARK themes to it. Of course, things are going to get to a point where its questionable, but that’s the story, that doesn’t mean its how he views things. Hell we have proof of how great a person he is. How he interacts with his fans. How he indulges in a lot of things they do and say. Not to forget how he learned about pepe and drew Saiko like honestly, that’s a man that has a big heart and wants to indulge his fans because he’s so grateful we enjoy his series. I’ve read his tweets before, he’s so surprised how many people enjoy TG and it warms my heart he feels thay way, because he deserves it.
My point is, whatever people want to start shit with Ishida it just botheres me. I remember when the TG manga ended and so many people were so pissed about it they sent hate to him, over and over again. He couldn’t even mention it wasn’t the end of the series and he APOLOGIZED for it. He was stressed about drawing the ending stuff for Root a and there are many things I have seen and read he’s done. He does A LOT of things to ensure that TG is enjoyed no matter what format it is. Manga, Anime, that video game (He made a character for, mind you), etc. The point is his series doesn’t equal how he feels in the real world. And I agree with how people feel lately saying they are scared for him cause of what Urie said about Mutsuki calling him a girl. They will take it transphobic and rush to him once again and I fear so bad for that.
You know…I owe a lot to Ishida-sensei. I really relate to Hide a lot, in many ways I will never tell most people, I mean I have sorta publicly once, but without TG I would have never met Hide. Without TG I would have never met the characters I adore (Like Hide, Seidou, Kaneki/Haise, and many many more). The ones I love writing fanfiction about and rping and stuff. None of it without him. There was a time I couldn’t watch or read TG because I have a cannibalism trigger. The meer word sent me into an attack, I would see it happening to me and I would cry and freak out someone was gonna do that to me. I had stopped watching TG for awhile because my trigger grew too much for me, but Imouto got into the series so I tried again, because I like sharing things with Imouto and we are like Kaneki and Hide, because I ALWAYS adored Hide the moment I saw him, he was my fave from start. I then got used to it and I coped with it, it was because of both Imouto (for getting into TG) and Ishida-sensei I faced my trigger and now I don’t panic as bad, I get a little heart jolt, but I am not immobilized by my own trigger anymore. And I owe that to Ishida because he made the series that helped me cope with it. I love Tokyo Ghoul SO MUCH, its my favorite manga now and I think about it a lot and I thank Ishida for that. A lot.
Even if Ishida wasn’t a good person, WHICH HE IS A GOOD PERSON, I wouldn’t judge him based on his story content alone and I wish that everyone else was like that too.
