Early hustling in the morning today. First group to initially start our game design presentations. It went well :)
Yesterday we finally picked up our printed booklet. It looks awesome! Next: Preparing for presentation on Tuesday. Exciting!
Progress
We are making good time, but we still have a heavy workload ahead of us. Until today we always managed to keep up with all the tasks of the given handouts. To improve our output we decided to divide our team into two parts. Evelyn and Stefanie are now assigned to the graphic core team. They are in charge for the overall graphic and interface design. Rolands and Clemens are working on the general game and content concept. In addition Clemens will work on the layout of the booklet and on the design of our presentation slides. The next milestone we want to reach is to finish the design work early in January to finally start with the design of the print booklet. We are psyched to present our work over the course of the golden pineapple award by the end of January.
We primary develop our mobile game app for iOS. Considering that, we have to distribute our game download through the App Store. Within that online marketplace we want to include our app in the primary category “games” in the subcategory “educational”. Key words are: serious game, one-tap, endless scrolling, nutrition, healthy food, lifestyle, arcade, starving serca, jump and run. Game information: Have you ever imagined that creatures from a foreign planet are forced to explore the earth and search for alternative supplements to ensure the survival of their species? Starving Serca will introduce you to the secrets of transforming human food into energy. Starving Serca is a jump & run, endless side scrolling mobile game that creates awareness for healthy food. Seller: Future Yellow, Rating: Rated 9+ for the following: infrequent/mild cartoon or fantasy violence, Compatibility: iPhone and iPod touch, Languages: English.
We have carefully positioned the concept of our serious game on the current mobile app market. So therefore we know about our potential marketing opportunities and how to attract our target market. Just for the record: our target audiences are teens starting at 14 and young adults. First of all we want to promote our app through food bloggers. By doing this we ensure that we use just a small amount of our marketing budget, directly hit our target group and hope that our publicity grows by their organic reach. Secondly we also want to be active on all social media by our own. To succeed on various platforms we also need to invest small fees to run advertisements that are addressed directly to our potential users. Furthermore it’s very important to build up an active online community to support a competition between players because we want that people share their results and battle against each other. In addition we have planned events in schools, universities, supermarkets, food festivals, restaurants and cafés to promote our game through a diversity of activities in the analog world. And lastly we want to invest in classic ads like TV commercials and print advertisements in lifestyle and gaming magazines. We also believe that our high quality standard in design, storytelling, overall game play and the fact that it is available as a free application will lead us to an honorable reputation in the mobile game community.
After doing some research about costs of everything this is what we came up with to make our game.
After another brainstorming session and some sketches we set our game app structure.
Get ready to be amazed...here it is: our storyboard!
Today we attended the winners presentations of this year's European Youth Awards.
Finding the right Game Engine
THE STARVING SERCA is a game for smartphones which will include platform offered features like touch gestures, gravity sensor, networking and others. There are also 3 main mobile OS in the market: Android, iOS and Windows. Unity 5 might be the perfect solution for the first game launch - it is affordable, flexible and can render game for different platforms. Unity 5 is free even for commercial purposes but with 75$ per month it gives full package for mobile game development. In case game launches successfully then it is worth to think about making it native for each platform individually to reduce memory and resource usage of device. While there are many other game engines that fit our requirements like Vision, Unreal Engine, ShiVa and others Unity might be the cheapest AND most effective solution to kick off the game because documentation is very clear, community supportive and tons of tutorials are freely available online. Go Unity 5.

Summary of the feedback
We were pitching the game to two other groups of our class and Paul Pivec to get some feedback. One of the group suggested to have the first 10 levels open but the higher ones locked and you can unlock the higher ones with a certain amount of coins or fruit. Also they suggested to get the informations about the healthy food AFTER ending the game with the feedback rather than at the beginning where the player will get the introduction of the task for the level. And they would like some feedback how many apples for example they collected in the game, because if they e.g. got 7 of 10 apples then they would be motivated to get all 10 the next time. They liked the idea a lot to be able to buy skies or fancy running shoes with the coins you collect. Paul suggested to add social networking in our game, for example that you can share your high score or that you got a badge.
Why is our game different?
To figure out what makes our game different from others we compared two games with ours. They are available on Google Play Store and have a similar game controls.
Ski Safari II
Ski Safari is an arcade game and was downloaded worldwide more than 140 000 000 times. It is game number 1 in 12 countries, including US, UK, Italy, France, Germany and Russia. The studio is called Sleepy Z Studios.
Gameplay
It's a one-tap, endless scrolling game and the tap causes the character to jump and additionally you can do tricks by pressing for a longer time like a backflip to earn extra points.
Story
Escape from forces of nature and team up with friendly animals as you race down the mountain.
Jetpack Joyride
Jetpack Joyride is nominated for the best arcade and action game of 2012. It's invented by the studio Halfbrick Studio.
Gameplay
After lift-off, simply touch the screen to ascend and release to descend, raining bullets, bubbles, rainbows and lasers downwards as you fly towards higher and higher scores. It's a one-tap, endless scrolling game and the tap is controlling the character up and down.
Story
Join Barry as he breaks in to a secret laboratory to commandeer the experimental jetpacks from the clutches of science evildoers.
Our game Starving Serca
We want to include the one-tap function in our game with the difference that there will be additional controlling possibilities, for example a double click for jumping higher and make it an endless game as well. Since our game is a serious game we want to motivate the player to rise the levels and really want to focus on learning something about healthy nutrition in a gamified and fun way.
Elevator pitch
Starving Serca is a jump & run, endless side scrolling mobile game that creates awareness for healthy food.
Make gamers curious
Have you ever imagined that creatures from a foreign planet are forced to explore the earth and search for alternative supplements to ensure the survival of their species? Starving Serca will introduce you to the secrets of transforming human food into energy.
