born the only son to william and vanessa matthews, luca had been the apple of his parents eyes from the moment he was born. he had four older sisters, his parents determined to only stop once they had a boy to carry on the matthews legacy. he was treated better than his sisters, was given the biggest room, was the one his father took on all the expensive business trips and didn’t have to stay behind with the nanny, whatever he asked for he got. he was spoiled rotten. 

his father was the owner of a billion dollar fashion chain, one of the largest brands in the world. his mother the head designer. so it wasn’t a shock to anyone when luca found his way into the fashion industry. when he turned three, his mother created a kids fashion brand. luca was the only child out of their fave that was included in the campaign photoshoot. after that he really blew up, he was being hired by multiple companies all over the world. and that didn’t stop as he got older. he’d been working in the fashion industry since he was turned three and was now the highest paid male model in the business. he even got working behind the scenes to create his own lines and collections. and on top of all that, he was an a list socialite. he got paid to turned up to events or make appearances as good promo. eyes were on him all the time and he didn’t disappoint.

being so affluent and spoiled, luca has a very inflated ego. he believes he is the greatest gift placed upon this earth. and above all that he is a hopeless romantic. he falls in love hard and quick. but just as quick as he falls into it, he falls straight back out of it. he will promise a person the world one day, only to rip it from them shortly after. he has a very short attention span and fails to realise that he is always the problem in these relationships.

She let him get his frustrations out, continuing to yell at her, despite being glued to the floor in front of him. This wasn’t Luca, he had never acted this way towards her, no matter what had happened to them in the past. They had been attached at the hip from the moment they met, so seeing him this way was splintering her heart into pieces. “I must be,” her voice cool and collected as she moved further through his home, parking herself next to him on the couch when he fell on it. She waited for him to get the tantrum out of the way before she wrapped her arms around his middle and let her head fall against his. “Actually, yeah, I could use getting fucked up right about now.” Bottle pressed against her lips as the liquid slipped down, handing the bottle back to him and letting her head fall back into the spot.

he looked over at her and sighed heavily, letting himself fall into her arms. as much as he wanted to push waverly away, she had been there for him through everything. she was his best of best friends and he knew he wouldn’t be able to function without her. not that he was. really functioning much right now. “what’s going on in your life?” there was a slight hint of concern there but he didn’t have the energy needed to muster up the level of concern he usually had for her. “i could do with hearing about your shit to distract me from all of mine.” not that this was something he really thought he could get distracted about but he could try.

He was not okay, Emilia didn’t have to even look at him to know that much. She had known how close Luca was to his mother, had watched it first hand, and she knew this would be difficult on him. That this was going to destroy him for a long time and the part of her that wanted to reach out and make sure he didn’t completely self-destruct was stopped by the side of her that knew her stepping forward would make things worse for him. He’d lose it completely. Still, the way her heart felt as though it was being constricted won out against her thought process and she found herself stepping forward to place a hand gently on his own holding the flask. “That’s fine, Luca, you can be done with me –” the words still whispered between the two of them. “But please stop yelling, okay?” He’d regret it later, when the grief no longer kept a tight grip on him, for causing a scene at the wake of his beloved mother. “Stop, don’t talk about Winnie like that, Luca. She’s grieving just like you are. You wanna take it out on me, fine, but we’re not doing this here. You’re going to remember that this isn’t about just you, it’s about your mom and the people just like you who are gutted about her death.” Chocolate orbs glancing up to his own as she let her hands grip tighter on his own. “You want to keep yelling at me then can we at least do this in a different room?” If he wanted her to be his punching bag she’d allow it, just for today. 

he stepped back when she stepped forwards, scared of what getting too close to her would do to him. how much he’d crave falling back into her arms again, telling her everything and watching her realise he was a monster. “don’t- i don’t want you close to me. i want you to fuck off emilia. get the fuck away from me.” but he knew what she was saying made sense. that his mom wouldn’t want to have a big scene caused right now. he looked over at the casket, his heart feeling like it was breaking into a million pieces. he let go of the flask, letting it fall into emilia’s hands. it wasn’t like he didn’t have a bag of pills in his pocket anyway. he reached up an arm, wiping away stray tears with his sleeve, tears he didn’t want anyone else ever seeing. “you can’t tell me what i can and can’t say about my own fucking sister. losing our mom doesn’t mean she’s any less of a bitch than she’s always been.” he shook his head, jaw clenched, teeth grinding, he was so angry with not enough outlets to get it out. he looked down at their joined hands and he felt weak, he wanted so badly to just break down, have her hold him and tell him it was all okay. “no i need- i have to say goodbye.” he said. “i have to stay here for this. so why don’t you just leave me alone emilia? it’s not like i ever cared about you in the first place.”

There had never been a question in her mind on whether or not she would go to the funeral of the matriarch of the Matthews family. After years of spending time with Winnie, she had gotten to know the family pretty well and it didn’t feel right not to go. She had wanted to be there for them in their time of need, to offer any help they may need. The last time she had seen Luca was Valentine’s Day, when he had fucked up once more and come to her place looking for solace that ended with them inbetween her satin sheets. Clearly remembering waking up overwhelmed by him, spending a lazy morning with him before she had to get on her flight to France for a competition. And it seemed like all hell broke loose while she was gone. Her friend had been put in rehab, his mother had died and Emilia hadn’t been there for either of them. Still, she didn’t expect the hostility to come from him. Deep breath to not lose her temper in the wrong place, Emilia rubbed her palms down the sides of her silk black dress and shook her head. “I’m not here for you,” she whispered quietly to him. She had a sinking feeling when she couldn’t get ahold of him that he hadn’t wanted to see her anyways. “If you’re done, Luca, I’m sorry for your loss. I’ll be going to find Winnie again now. You know, your sister?”

luca couldn’t think back to their last time together, it hurt too much. it hurt knowing that things had been so good, that he might’ve finally be able to get what he wanted. he’d been in emilia’s bed and still hung around the next morning to be with her. if that wasn’t telling of his feelings he didn’t know what was. but then she’d left and everything had gone to shit. luca’s whole world collapsed around him and now all he felt was anger and bitterness, any love and warmth that had once been in his heart was long gone. he bit down on his cheeks, always forgetting just how close she was to his sister. even though that friendship had come first, he still always forgot that he wasn’t the only matthews that was important in her life. “i’m so done.” he said, gesturing between them. “completely done.” he reached into his pocket and pulled out his small flask, taking a long sip of it. “nah don’t know who she is actually, sounds like a right bitch though.” he looked over at the casket and swallowed hard, his heart racing. “do whatever the fuck you want. it’s not like you being here or not being here is gonna make any difference to me. as far as i’m concerned, you don’t exist to me.” he just wanted everyone else to hurt the way he was hurting, he wanted to push emilia away for good so that she’d never come back to him. because everything he touched died, and he was terrified that he’d spill to her, tell her it was all his fault and then everyone would find out.

he had barely made it to his mother’s funeral, he had a lot of alcohol in his system, plus his high from the night before hadn’t really worn off. he stumbled out of his car, ignoring the gathering crowd of people wanting to offer their condolences, as if it’d help anyway. he just wanted to get it over with. it was only when he was through the doors that he saw emilia. he walked over to her and frowned. “the fuck are you doing here? i don’t remember sending you an invitation.” of course he hadn’t sent anyone an invitation. but his mom had loved emilia and seeing her just reminded him of all he lost and he couldn’t do it. “you need to learn where you’re not wanted.” he slurred.

luca couldn’t talk about it, couldn’t get the words out, but it was all he could think about. every thought that swirled around his head was her face, his mom. even trying to numb himself with every substance he could find wasn’t working. usually if he had a problem, it’d be drowned out so easily with alcohol, but this time was different and he could still feel the pain like a relentless punch to his guy. he frowned when she took the bottle from him and reached for it again, he’d have been easily able to snatch it back if his state wasn’t so sloppy, but as it was he completely missed the bottle he was aiming for and instead smacked the thin air. “give it back- that’s mine. i paid good money for that. that’s stealing! we have a thief!” he called to the bartender, but once glance at him made it very obvious he was on her side. traitor. he’d given him really good tips too. he shrugged at her question. “told him to take the night off and come pick me up at lunchtime tomorrow, cos i’m gonna be here all night, baby.”

The moment that Waverly had gotten the call from Luca’s father about the death of his mother, she had been trying to get ahold of him. She knew how close the two had been and Waverly’s heart was breaking for him. If it were one of her parents she would be an emotional mess and considering everything she didn’t know how Luca was coping. His phone turned off, Waverly knew she had no other option but to go to his house and see for herself. The spare key given to her a long time ago was used as she made her way inside, waving at the security guards outside before she made her way in. The yelling made her pause for a second before she continued moving her way through here. “No, Luca Matthews, you don’t get to just yell at me because you’re hurting. I’m here because you shouldn’t be alone right now. So go ahead and keep telling me how much you hate me or you don’t want to see me.” At least that way he would be feeling something. “But I’m not leaving.”

luca hated everyone and everything and he just wanted to be left the fuck alone. “it’s my fucking house, you don’t like it, there’s the damn door!” he stood up, stumbling over his own feet before he grabbed a bottle, made his way over to the couch and flopped down on it. he turned the tv on and up loud so he could drown out what waverly was saying, a stubborn scowl on his face. he was hoping she’d left, but when he looked up he still saw her. “why the fuck are you still here? are you really that dense and can’t take a hint?” he asked with a heavy huff. he reached up and rubbed at his eyes, trying not to cry because he couldn’t stop thinking about her and he wanted it to go away. he took a swig of the vodka and swallowed hard, wincing a little at the sharpness of it. “want some?” he offered it out to her despite his earlier words.

he looked at the bottle and eased up a little. if it got him another bottle then he’d play along. “talk about it? what’s there to talk about. she’s gone. and there’s fuck all i can do about it now.” and it was his fault, he was the one who’d made her come out that day. it was all his fault. he took the bottle. “thanks.” he said as he took a few swigs from it. he took the coat as well and wrapped it around himself, sniffing and looking out at the sea again. “honestly ivy i’m fine, you don’t need to be out here too, you’ll get cold.”

Yes, she could understand how protective Ace was over Alana and Florence, so his story made complete sense to her. She didn’t agree that Luca deserved his face being punched in but she understood why it happened. It was part of why she let her guard down for a moment and looked over at him to truly get a good look at how badly he was beat up. “You weren’t even fully healed from fighting Johnny in Bora Bora,” Emilia whispered as her hand moved to brush lightly against the bruises dotting his flesh. His questioning made her pause as she thought about it. One of these days she would stop letting him hurt her, one day she would grow immune to his charm and not allow him to weasel his way back into her heart but that was not today and Emilia sighed before she returned to him with a damp cloth and a first aid kit. “I know you say you’re trying but it doesn’t seem like you are. If you want to sleep around and be a fuck boy, that’s fine, but I’m not going to sit here waiting for you to decide you want me, Luca.
