Resources For Writing Deaf, Mute, or Blind Characters
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
Deaf Characters:

Okay guys, Ellen here with a couple of skin colour art hacks. Skin colours can be hard to pick, especially for races you’re not seeing in your own home or on TV every day. So I got a couple of hacks to share! The first is How To Make a Flesh Cloud.
On a layer set to Normal, make this gradient. This is pretty easy since most art programs have gradient tools. I used Levels to adjust how pale and how dark the colours could go. If you do this, you might wanna apply a Gaussian Blur a couple times to make sure it’s still buttery smooth.
Now you’re gonna go on a new layer and make this gradient here. These are called your undertones. On the left is the ‘cool’ tone, which you can stretch into a more purple range if you please. On the right is your ‘warm’ tone, which you can go further into yellow or almost green if you like. If you push too far into green, purple and blue, you’ll get some rather outlandish tones. Good for zombies and vampires if you’re looking for that, but I’m sticking to ‘lively’ tones for now.
Whoaaaa, what’s this! This is just what happens when you change the settings! With the later ‘Undertones’ on top, I set it to 30% opacity and the ‘Hue’ layer mode in CSP. Suddenly I have these lovely colours that I can play around with! I personally didn’t like any other combinations of layer modes, but you can play around at you please. Fiddling with the ‘Curves’ correction layer can offer you a wider variety of colours in a specific shade - light, medium, or dark can suddenly have a dozen different categories!
The other hack is for when you’re drawing someone in particular, or you have a piece of 3D animation you want to do fanart for, or you’ve picked a real person with the PERFECT skin colour that you want to duplicate in your art.
Let’s say I want to draw Lupita Nyong’o. She’s a gorgeous woman, why would I not?
DO NOT JUST PICK COLOURS OFF OF HER PHOTO. Picking colours from photos or 3D renders is so hard, guys. Never do it. You end up with more mud than gold in your pan. So I’m gonna introduce you to a special filter. In Photoshop it’s called Crystallise, but in CSP, it’s called Mosaic. It lets you take a photograph and turn it into boxes of solid colour, rather than tiny teeny pixels that are impossible to pick correctly.
Ta-dah! … Okay, it looks terrible. But now I have solid colours that I can pick and palette without fear of grabbing something that looks nothing like the final result!
Way more helpful than just going “Here’s some skin tones for all you stupid idiots who can’t draw PoC” like most people on this website do.
Eh. I understand why people are frustrated by it, but basically all tutorials you can get are geared towards drawing white people. You really need to hunt for help drawing shapes and picking colours that you’re not used to. But artists of colour would absolutely get sick of being asked ‘HEY TEACH ME HOW TO DRAW YOU’
We met up with artist Sara Richard (@artofsararichard) and author Franco (@awyeahfranco) to ask the question on everyone’s mind: What happens when an Owl meets a Ghost? Okay, so that might not be the question on your mind just yet, but it will be when you learn about their brand new graphic novel, The Ghost, the Owl.
What can you tell us about The Ghost, The Owl?
Sara: The Ghost, The Owl is a fully hand-painted graphic novel. Each page is an acrylic painting with hidden details in each page so the reader finds something new each time they read the story. This book is the story of a little owl who helps a ghost girl figure out who she is. The owl is pressured by his fellow animals not to meddle in the affairs of humans (or ghosts for that matter), but when he was a baby, the owl was saved by a kind woman who lives in a tiny house in the woods. This house, the ghost, and the owl find holds secrets to the Ghost’s past.
How did you come up with the idea for The Ghost, The Owl?
Franco: I saw Sara’s beautiful artwork and and struck up a conversation about what she was working on and what she might like to work on. She had mentioned that Ghosts and Owls were her favorite subjects to draw and they just got my wheels spinning. I blurted out: “Well, that’s a story right there!”
What came first, the illustrations or the copy for the story?
Franco: We spoke about the story and went back and forth with ideas. Sara worked on character designs and the story just spun from there.
Finish this sentence: If you’re into _____, then you will love The Ghost, The Owl.
Sara: Coraline or Coco or Book of Kells are probably the closest movies that fit in the same family tone and style wise. I also grew up with Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark so there’s a bit of a scary scene at the end relating to those nightmares from that series of books that I had as a kid.
What do you want the readers to take away from reading The Ghost, The Owl?
Franco: I want them to be entertained. I want them to be able to read the story and then go back and find all the things they may have missed on the first pass. There is so much to each of these illustrations that you could look for hours in wonderment.
Sara: I would love to have readers take away the appreciation for traditional media like acrylic paint and how with some time, you can create a book outside of digital art. Also, [with] a book the reader can know there are details that will appear with each read through the book. And if there’s any history buffs, I am fascinated by post-mortem photography and that subject has a place in the book. It’s a pretty small detail, but it’s the details that make this book special. We’ve had readers come back to us at conventions with stories of how the characters and situations reflected people in their lives. Some of the stories have been so touching, so we’re happy it’s striking a chord with people!
What do you enjoy about using Tumblr to promote your work?
Sara: I love seeing all the other artists’ work. It’s so inspirational! The feedback from Tumblr users on my own personal art page has been so helpful too.
Franco: That it’s an artist community that gets cultivated there. I’ve been using it for years to showcase all of my sketches and artwork.
What are some of your favorite Tumblrs out there right now?
Sara: I am a huge fan of artists @nataliehall and @heikala as well as my best friend and amazing cosplayer, @hsc-abby.
Intrigued? So are we. You can buy The Ghost, The Owl from all the usual places right now. Don’t forget to support your local indie bookstore if you can!

Hey, kids - I see this post making the rounds again, and I’d like to add some additional thoughts that I’ve gained in the 5+ years since originally making this post:
When I originally made this dumb comic in 2013, I was a Graphic Designer for a Radio Station in Ohio. As of this writing in 2018, I am a Storyboard Artist at Warner Bros. Animation. I am now one of “””the professionals””” referenced in the third image. And let me tell you:
…I am still making things up as I go.
…I still don’t have character turnarounds.
… I have… some worldbuilding done. Not all of it, though. That’s going to be a permanent work in progress.
…Making the comic is the character study/studies.
…I am still convinced I’m not working hard enough.
…You will never, no matter what you do or how far you go, ever feel like you’re completely ready to do something until you actually do it.
Trust me. I’m a professional.
Wordy Wednesday
Been a while, hasn’t it? We apologize for the daily, we’ve had to go back and rework several pages in the first issue! In order to sate your tastebuds though, Inktober is here, and promises to be even bigger than last year!
If you tag us in your artwork, we’ll feature you! If you draw one of our characters (find them in the thumbnail Thursday tag), we’ll feature you! (And also cry!) More than just our own artwork, we want to showcase our community who’ve been so loyal and patient with us! Thank you, everyone, for your hard work, and I so look forward to seeing how you improve at inking in a month’s time.
Good luck everyone~ <3

BIG NEWS ARE HERE: A new comic based on FUZZY; Demon Sanctuary. Come to follow Fuzzy in alternative universe as Father Furmann (pun intended) in his quest of exorcising and rehabilitating demons back to freedom - and what to do when one of them doesn’t want to leave.
This is made for a celebration of 1 million views in FUZZY. Demon Sanctuary is supposed to enrich FUZZY’s world from an alternative world point of a view. Everything is, in the end, connected.
