Dakota shook her head. "I think this is what I have to do. It will be for a summer or maybe a little longer. I don't have the exact timeline figured out yet but my dads are onboard with it." She grabbed Billie's hand. "Babe we can still talk and call everyday and I won't be too far away."

Billie shook her head even harder. She couldn’t see how Oliver and William would be on board with something like this. Something wasn't sitting right and it all felt like a recipe for disaster. “I don’t trust this guy, and I’m afraid he’s going to take advantage of you. You just met and he already wants you to move across state lines to 'get to know him?' Where was that energy when you were a kid? When he actually had a chance to have custody over you?”

"That makes sense. My mom was a stay-at-home mom when we were all little, but now she's back at work too." Tabby shrugged. Then she grabbed her lunch box off the floor and opened it. She might as well still eat, even though she wasn't in the lunch room. She pulled out a little Ziploc bag of apple slices, putting it between her and Billie. It was a cute nickname. "Hmm, that probably wasn't the whole reason. I mean, it's definitely a part of it. Like the talking too much, and wearing uncool clothes, and being Jewish, and not being interested in swapping spit with the boys. But seriously, why would I? They're all annoying and they smell. Plus I'm sure half of the boys on the wrestling team have ringworm." This was said in a whisper, like they were conspiring together. "But I think it's just that I don't match their definition of normal and rather than just ignore me or treat me with the basic amount of dignity that all human deserve, they bully me. I represent a break from their reality and their undeveloped brains can't handle that. If I can be weird and happy than all their striving for normalcy is useless." She took a bite of her turkey and cheese sandwich, half quoting an article she'd read during a rough day. "Well, I like Billie. It's like that actress of Doctor Who. Have you ever seen that show?"

“My mom does work at home sometimes, but when she’s working, she locks herself in her office. She’s an author and a motivational speaker.” People really liked her books, but Billie wished her mom would stop writing and have a normal people job. “You don’t like kissing boys? Is it because you like kissing girls instead? My brother told me that girls kiss each other sometimes and that’s okay as long as both girls want to be kissing.” Billie started thinking about Ashley and plotting revenge, partially zoning out from Tabitha’s monologue about normalcy. She had known Ashley for years from living in the same neighborhood. They weren’t close friends, but their parents were friendly, so they were more friends by association than anything. Ashley was already on thin ice with Billie for being a flake and missing her birthday party last spring, and now she was spilling juice on people on purpose. She zoned back in when Doctor Who came up. “I’ve seen a few episodes, but not a whole lot.”

"I mean, that's definitely a reason too. People can cheat on their spouses." Tabby said. So Wilhelmina's mom had issues, okay. "Wow, a nanny? Like on the tv show? Your family must be rich or something. Bubbe is my grandma. We moved here to be closer to her. Bubbe is Yiddish for grandma. Yiddish is a language that Jewish people from Eastern Europe speak. There's also Hebrew which is the language of the Torah and what I have to learn for my Bat Mitzvah. But Jewish people from Spain also speak Ladino which is this cool mix between Hebrew and Yiddish and Spanish... And yeah sorry. Hence, why Ashley and her friends accidentally spilled fruit punch on my white shirt." Tabby said, gesturing to her shirt. Her being a big mouth wasn't the only reason, but it was definitely one of them. "I'm glad you have friends though. They're really good for your social development. I mean, I have friends! I talk with people in class and I do have some people I sit with at lunch. We were closer in elementary school. But that's normal. Middle School is when our age group figures out their personality, so it's normal for friend groups to splinter." That was a quote from a book her dad had read her to make her feel better. "Do you go by Wilhelmina all the time? Or do you like Mina, like in Frankenstein?"

“Yeah. My parents are busy with their jobs.” It wasn’t as fun as the TV show made it seem though. Billie wasn’t expecting to get a lesson on Judaism and the different dialects of Jewish people today, but here she was. “You got juice spilled on you because you’re Jewish? Or because you talk a lot?” she asked. She didn’t mean it in a bad way, just an objective fact. She shook her head. “No. I don’t like Wilhelmina. I like Billie. Ms. Henderson won’t call me Billie though. I don’t know why.” She asked their art teacher to call her Billie on the first day of school, but she never did.

“maybe  just  a  couple  of  the  concertos  ?  easier  than  trying  to  find  my  own  …  if  you're  not  going  to  need  them,  that  is.”  sheepish  smile  as  she  tucks  a  piece  of  hair  behind  her  ear.  “uh  …  HOW'S  THE  NEW  PLACE  ?"  she  begins  nervously  tapping  the  nail  on  her  pointer  finger  against  the  nail  on  her  thumb,  forcing  herself  to  meet  his  gaze.  "is  it  feeling  like  home  yet  ?”

“How about we make copies of them, that way we can both have them?” he suggested. “It’s great! It’s too small to have a grand piano, but I like it. Maybe once I get tenure I’ll be able to get together a downpayment on a house and upgrade my keyboard.” He missed his dad’s grand piano, but not enough to move back in with him. “But how are you? What are you up to today?”

late  evening  was  always  the  most  lucrative  for  marco's  new  truck,  heavily  relying  on  the  foot  traffic  of  parties  going  to  and  from  the  club.  he's  finally  hit  a  lull  in  the  night,  was  relishing  in  being  able  to  rest  against  the  countertop  when  movement  caught  his  eye  in  the  distance.  hands  rub  against  his  apron  with  a  hefty  sigh  as  the  other  walked  up  to  the  window.  put  his  brightest  smile  on,  because  customer  service  always  came  first,  and  locked  eyes  with  the  other.  it  doesn't  take  long  for  his  smile  to  flip  from  purely  for  show,  to  liking  what  he  saw  across  from  him.  "do  you  have  time  to  try  the  whole  menu  ?"  he  jokes,  chuckling  lightly.  it  still  feels  strange,  having  the  freedom  to  make  light  banter  with  handsome  strangers.  "seriously,  though.  what  do  you  have  a  taste  for  ?"

Russell laughed at the other’s joke. A genuine laugh. Was he flirting or just being nice? Probably just being nice. It wasn't something he should think about too hard. “Time? No. Money? Also no. Appetite? Probably,” he answered, hoping the cook didn’t hear his stomach making sounds. “Uhh… I guess I’ll go with that chicken sandwich. Number 5 on your menu. With a Diet Coke.”

"what  were  you  doing  in  those  ubers  ?"  he  chuckles,  brows  scrunching  at  russell  in  amused  surprise.  his  uber  rating  was  serious  business  to  marco,  always  doing  his  best  to  be  the  best  passenger  of  the  day.  call  it  a  product  of  his  strict  upbringing,  but  he  would  never  dare  to  show  his  ass  in  public.  "what  kind  of  pizza  ?"  he  asks,  the  drunken  munchies  kicking  in  as  soon  as  he  hears  the  word.  "that  does  sound  nice,"  he  hums,  "you  weren't  in  the  PARTY  SPIRIT  tonight  ?"

“Things that I’m not too proud of,” he answered, not wanting to go into further detail. It was crying, mostly. Nothing inappropriate or illegal. “Mushroom and extra cheese. Nope, I’m not great at parties. Plus, I don’t know who the birthday girl is, so I felt like it would be weird of me to show up to a stranger’s birthday party. Side note, kind of crazy that one girl rented out an entire public park for her birthday.”

“oh, don't even worry about it at all. i swear, i feel like my brain goes right out the window the second i clock off.” hand lifts to demonstrate what that might look like, swooping close to her forehead. she watches as he pops the cap off and claps once he's finished. “you're secret's totally safe with me, i swear.” and just so he knows she's serious, she crosses her heart before accepting the bottle. “for what it's worth, it's a really cool trick! i never really had the chance to learn it. obviously.”

"I, uh, learned that one in college..." He wouldn't say he was a hardcore partier in college, but he had some tension he needed to get out before getting his big boy job at the high school. He reached out for the second bottle so he could open that one too.

“damn,” he sighs, shaking his head despite knowing this was likely the answer. “what if the person learning was fueled by stubbornness and unwavering confidence in themselves?” what he fails to mention is that owen has zero music ability. “my seniors are doing a quarter on american literature. i thought a fife might pull their attention. might even get a powdered wig, bang a drum.”

"Well that could go either way," he answered, almost nervous to see how this would ultimately go for him. "Owen, remember, these are high schoolers. High schoolers are mean as hell. They'd eat you alive in a powdered wig."

"Yeah, like in the cartoons! Snoopy is always dancing around Schroeder when he plays the piano. But if I was a kid learning, I'd be okay with a husky substitute. Yours is a very cute one after all." They pointed out, eating a few more gummies before crumpling up the package. "Do you teach adults too? Or just kids in like, a school sanctioned thing?"

“Unfortunately, some kids are scared of dogsDanny gets a little too excited when people come over, so he’s usually in my bedroom to avoid him jumping on people.” He had to start doing that after his dog tackled a ten-year-old to the ground last summer. “I actually do have one adult student! But most of the time, it’s kids ages 8-12. It’s not through the school, just a side hustle I have.”

mateo barks out a laugh, "you joke, but in better fitness, I'd be all over a class called that." if only he were joking too. unfortunately, anything with the word 'bone-crusher' in sounds like something he'd sign up for and ask questions later. "no, definitely not old or two people." he agrees with a gentle warmth to his cheeks. "or attending any weddings any time soon." again, unfortunately; he loves weddings. "just trying to keep my knee active without overdoing it and the gym makes me want to overdo it, so... thought it'd be good to try something new."

Ocean laughed along with him. "Well in that case, I'll have to talk to my boss about making that a real thing. Though she probably wouldn't like my use of the phrase 'Bone-Crusher.'" He loved his boss like a third parent, but she criticized him for being "too silly" at times. "In all seriousness, I think you'll like it here. You just have to make sure you're listening to your body and stretching at the beginning of the class."

"well, today's your lucky day!" nora smiles, trying to seem more confident than she is advertising to strangers. "I took over running it a little while ago, so you can ask me anything." within reason, but she hopes that part doesn't need to be said out loud. "how did you hear about it, if you don't mind me asking?"

"I guess my first question would be what book are you reading?" he asked. "I saw a flyer a while back... Well, part of a flyer. It was ripped in half, so there wasn't any information about the when or where of it all." He wasn't sure if it had been ripped intentionally or through regular outdoor wear and tear.
