ive been getting a bunch of questions like this so here’s a lil public response of sorts ——>
It’s not a departure so much as an expansion. we enjoy, and are equally talented at using other methods to produce music.. and we want to incorporate that in our main musical outlet (anamanaguchi). it’d be very creatively frustrating and stifling if we weren’t allowed do that, but luckily we make the rules there lol. but yeah, honestly anamanaguchi has always strayed from traditional ‘chiptune’ stuff: at first it was adding guitars to chip stuff, then playing shows w/ non-chip artists, then it was experimenting w/ various styles and tempos, then making music videos + art that arent limited to pixel art, then playing non-chip festivals, then writing and recording vocal parts for tracks, etc… what’s different now is that we’ve done enough stuff that our every move should no longer have to be in comparison to “chiptune” (musically/stylistically). our last track “pop it” was pretty unlike anything we’d ever put out. way pop-ier and experimental than our previous stuff, and didn’t really feature any chip elements, but still made by us. yet most articles about it still started like “8bit nintendo guys” and spent most of the time comparing the track to video games. youtube comments were like “umm, this sounds nothing like the scott pilgrim soundtrack”. i get why this happens.. so far that’s what we’re most know for, and i guess there are a lot of lazy music bloggers out there that don’t have time to actually listent to the track they’re talking about… but just because i understand it, doesnt mean that im ok with the fact that it’s gotten to a point where i could literally put out an acoustic christian folk song w/ a rap verse in it, and people would still be like ‘chiptune nerd quartet put out donkey kong inspired 1-up anthem’. Not to mention the amount of ppl that won’t listen to our cool acoustic christian folk song w/ a rap verse in it SIMPLY because they’re convinced that the only thing we could possibly produce is chiptune, and they dont want to listen to chiptune. That outlook towards my musical ability is kinda terrifying for the rest of my career, because this isnt the only thing i want to do in life.
So to answer your question a bit— like you said, artists grow/change. I wouldn’t say evolving is much of an active decision for me.. it just happens. I actively dont want to be stagnant and do the same thing over and over. We also don’t want to give our listeners the false hope that we are going to do the same thing over and over again. Thus disclaimers like ‘this album wont be chiptune’. To explain that statement a bit: this album won’t be a ‘chiptune’ album because the chip stuff won’t be the backbone of the album. Us as producers will be. We’re not going to avoid chip stuff, but we don’t need it to produce this album. We only need us writing. If you’ve liked us as composers, then you should be excited about this album! If you’re open to music and sounds other than chip stuff, then you should be excited about this album! If what you actually liked about us was just the chip sound, more so than the music, then there is A LOT more pure unadulterated chip stuff out there to check out! If you absolutely don’t want to hear music from us outside of this one specific sound palette, thennn this album will let you down.
One question that came up when realizing we didn’t want to make a chiptune album was whether to do this under the name anamanaguchi or not. It would obviously be easy to avoid ignorant labeling by starting fresh with a new name and no history, but it also seems unnecessary. There are funny pictures of me online as a teenager but i don’t feel like i need to delete those to be correctly understood today. And unless youre studying my style evolution (lol), I dont want a picture i post of myself today to be perceived exclusively in relation to a teenage pic of me. Feel free to compare me to my current peers though. I wish more people compared Anamanaguchi to 2015 music scene/peers, instead of constantly being compared to 2009 Anamanaguchi…. Anywaysssss, chiptune will always be part of who we are and what got us to where we are. I think it’s pretty understandable why we want to do much more than just chipmusic. That said I don’t think we should have to ‘hide’ that we made/make chipmusic to be creatively understood past that. I guess we’ll find out later this year…….. <3 -ary
