Seriously, just, look at Geoffrey here. Look at his face, look at his posture, look at his entire demeanor. As much amusement as he’d been having with this fight just a second ago, everything instantly changed in this moment. You can just feel the despair that came welling up as soon as Sally mentioned his wife.

Geoffrey didn’t just lose Hershey; he also lost his hope. He has nothing left except his service to Naugus — even moreso at this point, now that everyone knows that he is, in fact, Naugus’ apprentice. He’s lost everything, and that downward spiral began when Hershey allegedly died. It’s pretty much the perfect plan on Naugus’ part, because it ensures that Geoffrey has nowhere else to turn.

This scene is even sadder to me, though, because I personally believe that this is the first time Geoff’s said those words out loud. He didn’t tell anyone for quite a while that something had happened to her, and I think that was mostly due to his own inability to accept the finality of it more than it was to preserve plans or spare worry or anything like that. When you lose someone, saying out loud that they’re gone is scary. Just the word “dead” itself can be difficult to say, let alone that your loved one is dead. My feeling is that he said it out loud here because, well, he’s lost everything else at this point. Admitting that his wife really died is just one more piece of the new reality he has to face now. His life has pretty much fallen apart, and this scene, just for this second, is where you can see the weight of it starting to hit him in the face.
