Please welcome to our 2016 lineupâŠNels Cline: Music from âLoversâ. Rolling Stone has heralded him as one of the top 100 Guitarists Of All Time. Known to many as Wilcoâs lead guitarist, Clineâs catalog spans four decades and explores many corners of the jazz, rock, punk and experimental genres.

It's about time Nels gets to play at Newport. This is a project he's been working on for quite awhile, and it's a fantastic ensemble. It may be worth a road trip!
Wilco closed their show in Brooklyn last night with a stunningly beautiful cover of David Bowieâs âSpace Oddity.â Itâs very true to the original, but they also made it their own (especially with Nelsâ parts). If youâre as sad about Bowie being gone as I am, it may not be a bad idea to have a box of tissues nearby.

I so admire how open and honest Nels Cline is regarding his music and his approach. I have listened to several interviews with Nels over the last few weeks and he is consistent and easy-going in all settings and is very comfortable discussing his music and influences. In preparation for this weekâs Alloy radio show that focused on âsound,â I watched this interview/hangout that Nels gratiously did with folks at Radius Cowork in Eerie, PA in advance of a performance he and Julian Lage did on October 19, 2015 at the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts and Culture in Erie, PA. If the video does not automatically jump to spot 6:25 into the interview (the spot where Nels talks candidly about âsoundâ) you can fast forward to that spot on your own. His openess to what sound is, can be, and what it ultimately becomes, how it is interpreted and experienced is refreshing. In this weekâs show I played the complete âOnan Suiteâ from Nelsâ 2009 album âCoward.â You can hear the full version of this piece by checking out this weekâs Alloy playlist (songs 10-15). If you dig those tracks by Nels, you can purchase the album here or here. Thanks watching and listening!
Happy 60th Birthday, Nels Cline!
Hard to believe Nels and his brother Alex are 60. Here's to many more years of sonic adventures!
I'm hoping to hit the road next Friday night to see Nels play in Philadelphia. It's been way too long since I've gotten to see him.

Combining Western and traditional Chinese stringed instruments, electric guitars and keyboards, and a multitude of percussion instruments from around the world, and crowned with the arresting voice of vocalist Areni Agbabian, the piece creates a rich and expansive universe of sound in which short excerpts from the ancient Mahayana Buddhist text the Avatamsaka Sutra (or Flower Garland Scripture) and thematically related contemporary poems of Thich Nhat Hanh are set, reflecting the truly cosmic nature of the sutra, which poetically unveils and explores the thoroughly interpenetrating, interconnected, and interdependent nature of reality. This performance is made possible by a grant from the Shifting Foundation. http://angelcityjazz.com/

Sonic Youthâs Lee Ranaldo is the subject of a new documentary called In Doubt, Shadow Him!. As The Wire reports, the Arnaud Maguet-directed film is coming this December via Hifiklub. It will be available as a DVD accompanied by a double 10" vinyl soundtrack. Watch the trailer below via FACT. The film is described as a âdriftâ and features a score by Ranaldo and Hifiklub recorded at Sonic Youthâs studio. DNAâs Ikue Mori, Nels Cline, guitarist Alan Licht, composer Phill Niblock, Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner), the poet John Giorno, Velvet Monkeysâ Don Fleming, and others contributed to the film. Maguetâs previous films include I Am a Genius (And Thereâs Nothing I Can Do About It), which focuses on R. Stevie Moore, and Plans Make Gods Laugh (A Drift About Alain Johannes), which follows Queens of the Stone Age member Alain Johannes. In the years post-Sonic Youth, Ranaldo has released two solo albums: Between the Times and the Tides and Last Night on Earth. Read our 5-10-15-20 interview with Ranaldo.
