Huang Xiaoming Named Best Actor at Shanghai Film Festival

Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming was named Best Actor at the Golden Goblet Awards Ceremony of the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival on Saturday. The jury was impressed by his depiction of a mentally challenged person in the film DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY (阳光俱乐部), also known as MOSTLY SUNNY.

“With a character that is easily labeled and stereotyped, the actor’s performance renders the role a unique charm through presenting his clumsy and heavy body and innocent eyes,” the jury said, adding, “By looking at his eyes, the jury sees precious belief and strength, and the warmest humanity.”

Typically, a heartthrob and leading man, Huang gained a considerable amount of weight for the part. He experienced a profound sense of honor and good fortune upon being awarded this much sought-after prize.

As he accepted the prize, Huang said the message of the film is that “life is ups and downs — but you are not alone.”

"I have pursued a career in acting for 26 years," Huang said. "Regardless of the fluctuations and challenges I have faced in my life, as well as the feelings of helplessness, disappointment, and confusion I once encountered, I will always maintain a resolute and courageous attitude to progress."

Noting that the film is also about the Chinese value of filial piety, the actor went on to thank his parents, saying he wouldn’t be standing onstage without them. Today was also the 95th birthday of Huang's grandmother. He wished her the best wishes and good health.

Huang Xiaoming in the film DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY (阳光俱乐部), which will premiere at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival.

The movie, whose Chinese title translates to "Sunshine Club," revolves around a mentally challenged man (Huang Xiaoming) who lives a happy life with his optimistic mother. But the family is soon shook to its core when the mother is diagnosed with cancer, prompting the protagonist to believe he can help through the power of positive energy, while his elder brother, a doctor, attempts to cure her through conventional means.

Xiaoming spent more than a month dining, talking and studying with mentally challenged people. He also gained more than 15 kilograms in weight and paid visits to the family of mentally challenged persons to portray the role well.

"I am a family-oriented person," said Huang. "I love this script and the story of this special group of people touched me."

The film is helmed by post-90s generation director Wei Shujun. Xiaoming spoke highly of young director Wei's distinct expressive style of the story and characters, adding that it had been his long-time wish to cooperate with him.
