A few weeks ago we took a trip to Macgaliard Falls in Valdese, NC. This was a fateful day for my Parrot Bebop as it had an unfortunate collision with a tree limb and ended up in the creek on top of the falls. I was able to retrieve the drone rather quickly. And it looks like the motherboard is toast for the rear right motor. Got a new motherboard on the way for the Bebop. But we did have a beautiful day at the falls.

So I've been playing around with my Eachine E011. A couple weeks ago I flashed the stock firmware with Silverware. Soon I'll be ordering a camera for it and set a fpv goggles. I also 3d printed new thumb sticks for the transmitter. Absolutely turned this fun little quadcopter into a beast! Lol

Italian entrepreneur Edoardo Stroppiana set up Air Selfie Holdings in the UK. Now I only suspect that the reason for doing so is simple. The Italians are not known for the mechanical or technical prowess. I haven’t met an Alfa Romeo that hasn’t broken down midway during their warranty and Olivetti has often been confused with Ovaltine as an Italian chocolate drink.

Their sense of fun can also be confused with their love for showing off. They like to leave around derelict Roman structures all over their city and call them art. You could be walking down the street in Milan when you chance upon a centuries old Aqueduct. So why is it still there? I suspect that all they want to do is lay claim that they forgot to patent how to run water to your home two thousand years ago. And that you should be thankful that they thought of it first.

No. They are just too lazy to take it down. In hindsight, if you can’t be bothered to clean up after your ancestors, what makes you think they would be able to make a drone fly?

Well, AirSelfie borrows heavily from British savvy but that isn’t great either. After the Steampunk era, there is little to say that the Brits have an idea on what flies well. So here you have the AirSelfie drone, a joint Italian/British outtake on what would be a camera whore’s wet dream.

It is loaded with a 5-megapixel camera that can shoot full high-definition (HD) 1080p video, as well as a 4GB microSD card. It also uses Sonar to keep itself stable and a tiny camera to keep its inherent Tourette syndrome under check. This doesn’t mean you should take it outdoors during a typhoon for a selfie. It doesn’t promise any wind resistance let alone shoot a picture during a breeze.

That’s not all though, it is also equipped with geomagnetic sensors so as to tell which direction the sun would set and a barometer, which according to my limited knowledge is used to tell when it would rain—which would be most useful in deary England.

The AirSelfie has a flight time of only 3 minutes, and works from an app which you can install on your iPhone or Android device and has a range of 20 meters.

Because it is small, there is even a jacket that fits on your smartdevice.

Charging time for an exhausted battery is half an hour, and can be done via a USB power bank which is provided for in the US$100 funding price tag.

Would you buy one now? Maybe if you are a Instagram narcissist who cannot live a day without looking at yourself on social media.

Below are two of the better shots from the JJRC Elfie quadcopter. These were taken with the onboard camera. The onboard camera is a 0.3MP camera. So don’t expect DJI Phantom quality shots. But for a camera drone that costs $50, you can’t beat it.

The Elfie Drone from JJRC

I have been wanting a drone for month’s.  And then for Christmas, my wife surprises me with JJRC’s ‘Elfie’.  And let me just go on the record to say, it’s an awesome little drone.  It’s arms foldup making it roughly the same size as my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 smartphone. It doesn’t come with a transmitter.  Instead, you use an app on your smartphone to control it.  There is a camera onboard that is adjustable vertically.

Basically, connect the battery in the compartment underneath the quadcopter.  Fold out the arms, and turn it on.  Then you install the ‘JJRC’ app on your Android or Apple smartphone and turn your phone’s wifi on. When you power up the quadcopter, it broadcasts a wireless network SSID.  Connect your phone to this wifi connection, then launch the JJRC app and tap on the app’s ‘Connect’ button to see the video from the drone itself.  Now you’re ready to fly.  Turn on the OSD,hit the Alt Hold button and press the up arrow to arm the motors. Throttle her up and she’s in the air.  

The Elfi provides FPV via wifi for FPV fliers.  It can also record the video stream to your phone and snap picture.  It has headless mode and can fly with gyro control from the phone if the onscreen control sticks aren’t to your liking.

For $50, this is a great first quadcopter.
