Andie couldn’t lie, the last few weeks had been difficult for the wolves. When something bad happened, suspicion could only be cast so many ways and the wolves were often targets of that. “I’m sorry, please sit down. My head as been all over the place lately. I’ve been rather busy. You look tired.”

Gabriel had been attempting to not be alone and to hang out with other members of the pack. It would be the only way he could learn more about being a wolf before the next full moon. When he realized that he was being addressed and who he was being addressed by, he straightened up before sitting down with her. “Oh, no, you’re fine. A lot has happened... I’m okay. I just zone out sometimes.” Finding Ava had had some impact on the frequency in which he zoned out.

“Okay, Gabe.” He said with a smile. So now what was he supposed to do? Dammit, Ash why didn’t know this this through all the way? He wanted to know so much about the other - his likes and dislikes, how he grew up, what he did for a living, his favorite shows - but it wasn’t like he could just get into all of that after a very brief introduction. “Did you order? Can I get you a coffee or tea?” He asked, waving down the server. He said this almost as a way of stalling or keeping the other here for just a little bit longer until he collected his thoughts. If he was ever going to be able to do that. 

When asked if he’d ordered, Gabriel had to think for a moment. His brain was completely on empty from the long night he’d had. After another moment, he shook his head. “I was probably going to get a coffee and maybe some of the pancakes,” he answered. “Are you ordering anything?” For whatever reason, Gabriel wasn’t ready for the other guy to leave yet. Something was familiar.

Jazz nodded. “I can’t imagine how it was for them. My parents are both werewolves and full moons are still worrying enough…what made you leave them?”

He assumed the them in question was his adopted parents rather than his biological family. He had no idea why he was sent away from the family in Edgewater. “I needed to find my bio family. Here.”

She felt him approach more than she heard him, her magic being on edge. Finally the darkness lifted itself off of the young witch, a memory lingering in her mind and as well as the taste of ash upon her tongue. She blinked. Once, twice. And the image in front of her became clearer. She knew this boy. She knew this place. “I… I can get up”, she mumbled, trying her best to lift her head from the leaves and the dirt. Every muscle in her body was tense and she hurt in various places, but Ava managed to finally sit. “An ambulance? No… wait…I need to…” She needed to focus. But her brain was rising only slowly out of the fog that had kept her down for days. Magic? Drugs? She could not say. But she needed to be careful. She needed to think. “I don’t remember what happened”, it felt like only half of the truth because there were still snippits of all of it floading in front of her eyes and ears. “We need to get away from here. We need to get away from…” him. Fear clutched her heart and suddenly the leaves around them started shimmering again, bits of smoke rising into the air. Her magic was out of control, ready to attack any moment. “But don’t get too close to me”, the witch shook her head, trying to make everything clear again.

Don’t get close. That warning resonated quickly as he stumbled back from her. That coupled with the way the fire licked the leaves around them, he knew he was in trouble. Either fire would get him or hunters would. But he knew he couldn’t leave her alone. They just need to get to the edge of the forest. “You set the pace, and I’ll follow you. If any danger comes...” He hesitated. Of all the wolves to find her, it had to be him. Gabriel Fournier. The small wolf that could barely bite still. Great. “I’ll try to protect you.”

She watched him carefully. It was interesting to see what effects the last few days had on the people of Crescent Hill, all though Agnes tried her best to not jump to conclusions too fast. “I am glad to hear it went good and that it was fun. Literature and art can often be a refugee in troubled times”, she tilted her head to the side a little. Maybe she should pick up a book herself. It did help from time to time. As the waitress approached Agnes ordered a hot chocolate. It could neither sustain nor nourish her and sometimes it made her entire body tremble, to be confronted with food she could not digest. But the vampire loved the taste of it, it was worth a little pain. And it would help in holding up appereances.  “Sleep can be more than therapeutic. It helps us to concentrate, to create. And that, I have found is a huge booster for one’s mood. Might I ask what has made you so sour so early in the morning? Apart of course, from the terrible things we see in the news these days. All of Crescent Hill seems to be in mourning”

Normally, Gabriel tried to keep his feelings bottled up. However, he was tired, he was sore, and everything bad was happening. Tears pricked at his eyes for a moment before he tried shrugging them away. But that didn’t work. He felt sad and scared and stressed. Trying to get ahold of himself so he wouldn’t actually cry in the diner, he turned to the woman and answered as simply as he could, “I miss home. I miss feeling safe. I know there are people here that can protect me, but it feels like my world is upside down and the only people that can fix it are in another country.”

“Hmm,” Dwight nodded. “Well, hiding from it won’t make it disappear. Just make sure you look after yourself.”

“I promise, I will,” and Gabriel meant that. He didn’t take any promises lightly. Adjusting his bag on his shoulder then, he looked back in the direction of the town. “I think I might go home to sleep now, but it was very nice meeting you.”

Jazz nodded, rubbing her lips together. “I think that’s… something we have to get used to.” She gave him a sad smile. “it’s probably going to be the rest of our lives makes it real hard to… let anyone that’s not a wolf in.”

It wasn’t a life he wanted to get used to, but Jazzy was right. Their lives had definitely changed during that full moon. “Especially because I’m not sure how most people would react to us existing. I’m sure it was shocking enough to my parents when they adopted me.”

“Then stop saying you’re a crap wolf and learn from the people in town,” she shrugged. “That simple. Only you can change that,” she smiled gently. 

His cheeks grew red as she pointed out the incredibly simple solution, but he felt a pit of anxiety in his gut at the idea of trying to fit in. He knew he didn’t. Even on a human level, the accent he had placed him as not from Missouri. “You’re right.”

Felix sighed, looking out the window once more. “Humans do not know about werewolves. But.. perhaps he simply had an accident.”

“But they know about regular wolves,” Gabriel commented and folded his hands on the table. “But you’re probably right. Freak accidents happen all the time, don’t they?”

Ash’s instincts told him that there was something…supernatural about his distant relative. But there was no way. That would be far too ironic. To Ash’s knowledge his mother’s family didn’t carry any werewolf gene or were not members of any coven. He just decided to completely ignore those thoughts for now. There were more pressing matters to get to - like how the hell he was supposed to tell the young man that Ash was his third cousin. “Thanks.” He flash a crooked smile. “I’m Ashton Knight.” He made sure to use his full name, hoping that maybe he would recognize it. Maybe. “You can just call me Ash though.” 

“Ash,” he repeated quietly. Gabriel wasn’t sure what had made him stand out in the diner for the stranger to want to sit and talk, but he was too tired to question anything. It was just a chance meeting with another student who seemed to be around his age. Just another student that had a slightly strange smell. Though, he wasn’t sure the guy was a student. But then, the full name seemed a little familiar from Gabriel’s research. He just didn’t know where he’d seen Knight before. “Gabriel Fournier, but you can call me Gabe if you want.”

“I don’t think being raised by humans makes you a bad werewolf. Is there a way to be a good wolf?” she found herself laughing slightly. “I’m a witch, hence the coven. And being in a coven doesn’t make someone a good witch. It’s how you feel about yourself.”

“I guess, community? Knowing how to be safe? Those are probably the signs of a good werewolf,” Gabriel stated quietly and ran a hand over the cool glass of water that was now sat before him. “I don’t feel like a good wolf. I don’t feel like a bad wolf. I feel... Like a wrong wolf. Or a who wolf, maybe?”

“Your parents knew you were a wolf? I’ve never told mine I was bitten,” he said. “There’s always hunters, hate, fighting… it’s mankind. Not just in the supernatural world. I joined the military as a kid, those were humans.”

“It was probably in the adoption agreement,” Gabriel joked with a quiet laugh. In reality, his first time turning had been a surprise for everyone in the family. “I just don’t like thinking about the hate in the world.”

“But someone else’s mistakes aren’t yours. You can make your choices now. I don’t need to know about the past to help people now,” he shrugged lightly. “The best way to protect anyone, is to look out for each other.”

Gabriel’s eyebrows knit together as he heard the teacher speak. However, he wouldn’t argue about his own personal reasons for wanting to do the research. Instead, he nodded to what Nate said. “Right, that’s probably the best way.”

Felix chuckled glancing out of the window. “I think your conscience is clean. I don’t think the man was hiking at all.” 

His brow furrowed at the comment as he looked up to the vampire. “What was he doing in the forest during a full moon, then? I mean... He was human, right? Wouldn’t he know about the dangers? Was he the... One that made Ava and her sister disappear?”

Jazz nodded, giving the guy a soft smile. “That makes me feel a little better i don’t… understand much of what’s going on right now. I’m just frightened.” 

“I feel the same,” he said with some relief that he wasn’t the only one feeling in the dark. “I mean, we were... It was a full moon. One moment everything is normal and the next, waking up to... All of this. It makes my head spin.”

Felix chuckled at the man’s humour. “Then i think we can all stop acting so gloomy. Tragic things happened here… but tragic things happen everywhere. You have lives to live. You’ll all move on.” 

Almost jokingly, Gabriel put his index fingers to the corners of his mouth to force a smile before letting it fall back to a neutral expression. “I’ve never had anything this tragic happen before though. I mean, I knew... I talked to the man that they found. I might have been the reason he was hiking because I showed him newspaper archives that I found about the best hiking trails in town.”

There he was. The real reason Ash was staying in this town. He couldn’t actually believe that he was able to track down an actual, blood related family member. For years, Ash had longed for a family. He left his mother at 18 which was something he had deeply regretted for years. Maybe he’d still be human that way, and would have been able to be with his mother before she died. Anyway. Ash wasn’t going to dwell on that. He needed to focus on the present issues. And the present issue was how the actual fuck he was going to tell Gabe that they were related. He cleared his throat before sliding into the booth across from the young male. What the fuck was he supposed to do now? “Sorry. This seat taken?” He asked. 

The sound of a clearing throat startled Gabriel out of his thoughts and long stares out the window. He practically jolted back to reality as he sat up straighter in his seat and glanced up to the stranger. There was a scent about him that Gabriel could almost place. The same as the bookshop lady. He watched as the man sat before shaking his head at the question, “No, you can sit there if you’d like.” As if he were going to tell the man, Yes, you have to leave now. Plus, maybe the new company would be nice.
