Background

Gabriel was born to a wealthy and conservative family in Valencia, Spain. However, it was out of wedlock and so he was hidden from everyone including his actual family. To his grandparents and mother, he was the illegitimate son while the others knew him as the child of one of the help, his babysitter at that time.

Because they thought of it to be easy, his family thought of him as the help as well and not the son that their daughter had. For his formative years, he was treated rather poorly by his own family.

When he was five years old, his mother got married and soon enough had a daughter. Gabi was ecstatic because maybe then he would have another kid to play with, completely oblivious that she was his sister.

Growing up, he would have his sister constantly by his side. They always played together since they were the only kids in the huge estate. In the mornings, he would get to relax and play with her before his duties in the afternoon and the evening.

His only respite was the kitchen; he loved watching the chef cook numerous delicious meals that he would get a small taste of. Being in the kitchen meant that he learned by watching, and with a little bit of annoying the chef, he was taught how to do so too.

One morning, Gabi was tasked to go to the store to buy some of the other ingredients in the store a few blocks away from the estate. Not knowing that his sister was following right behind him, he just turned around when he heard the roar of an engine, a huge crash, and a cry for help. 

Rushing towards the crash site, they were surprised when they found their sister lying motionless on the ground while the person who had hit her had driven away. 

Gabi took the death of his sister really hard, believing it was his fault that she died. He didn’t know that she was following him, yes, but the way people were framing the story was that it was his fault for not knowing. He was fifteen then and carried all the guilt.

The death of his sister had been the cause of his first manic episode which ended up with him getting arrested for public indecency and trespassing. Gabi couldn’t remember anything of this incident.

The next four years were a blur to him as he decided to bury all his emotions by drinking himself to sleep almost every night.

By the intervention of his “mother” or his babysitter, he got sober at 20. It was then when he decided to pursue a degree in culinary. Because Valencia only held bad memories for him, he moved to Madrid where he worked to pay for his culinary degree.

After finishing his studies in three years, one of his professors hired him for one of his restaurants as a sous chef, second to only him.

It was a great job-- it helped pay the bills, he even had enough leeway to go on vacations once in a while.

There were rumours that his professor was going to retire and promote him executive chef which ended up being true, although the professor decided to sell the restaurant to a buyer. Which ended up being his mother’s family.

The stress of having to deal with it caused him to relapse together with having another full-blown manic attack where he just quit his stable job of three years and decided to look for opportunities elsewhere. That ended up being in New York where he works and partially owns a cat cafe.

Trying to go back into the swing of things, Gabi has been sober for a month now and is trying his best to move forward and have a new start.

Basic Facts

Gabi loves cats and it’s the reason why he bought a cat cafe! All the cats in the cafe are free for adoption and Gabi is willing to help anyone out if they want to adopt!

Instead of drinking alcohol, he fuels the urge with drinking espresso all the time. It’s the reason why he seems quite all over the place when people visit.

Gabi stress-cooks quite a lot so he always asks friends to rate his cooking. He’s half the reason why his friends will never starve, ever.

His accent is quite thick too and he speaks way too fast for anyone to really understand at first.

Gabi has also sworn off relationships and prefers hook ups and sleeping around instead (potential plots!)

“Yes, I feel like it’s a good idea at this point.” Luca wasn’t sure how Gabi would feel about the real reason why, though he wasn’t sure if it mattered at the end of the day. “You can, if you would like to, but I need you to realize it’s difficult to trust that you still like me. We went on a date, slept together, and I confessed to you my own feelings…and you ghosted me basically the next day? Which,” he rubbed his hands on his thighs uncomfortably, “Is part of the reason I want to bring Besito home. You seem uncomfortable with me being here as often as I was…so.”

“I know.” Gabi looked down, suddenly finding it much harder to organize any of his thoughts. He had hurt Luca and they weren’t even dating yet. He thought it wouldn’t be worth it to pursue a relationship but then sweet Luca came along and that flew out the window. “I’m not uncomfortable... I just really couldn’t get out of bed or even think about getting up the past few weeks. I’m bipolar and one of my low episodes happened the next day.” It was really bad, considering his manic period before that.

Luca was only visiting for Besito, if he was honest, and he didn’t quite know how to react to seeing Gabi, especially seeing Gabi waiting for him. Their date had gone rather well, at least Luca thought so, and he hadn’t been able to take his mind off the other…then Gabi stopped responding. Luca had tried for a little while, but he knew how to take a hint. “Sure, I needed to talk to you anyway,” he sighed, “I think I’m going to adopt Besito. I really love him, and with the new developments between us, it’s probably easier if I bring him home, rather than stopping by every day.”

Gabi could tell that Luca was going to tell him that they weren’t interested in them anymore, knowing that he had hurt him by disappearing like that. And it hurt, knowing that it would  probably never stop happening to him but he liked Luca very much. “You’re adopting him?! Finally!” The Spanish man exclaimed until he realized Luca said something about developments between them. “Can I explain why I disappeared though? It has nothing to do with my feelings for you either because I still like you very much.” He started with that.

At one point in time, Luca had been going to Gabi’s shop every morning, and then it became less and less. Now, he might go once a week, if that. Which sucked because it meant not seeing Besito, but Gabi seemed to be avoiding him at best. Thankfully, Besito was happy to see him regardless of how often Luca showed up, and being there less made him consider adopting the cat even more because right now he was only going for Besito. Like today. “Where are you, baby man?” He cooed as he walked through the door, eyes already on the ground and looking for the cat. “Ah, hello Gabi.”

Gabi should’ve explained that he had a mental illness, should’ve explained that he would have bouts and episodes where he would just disappear. He knew that he was being unfair to Luca, just disappearing like that but he would try his hardest to make up for all the time he had missed. Hearing Luca enter his cafe and then immediately looking for Besito, he just felt his heart grow bigger. “Hi, Luca... Can we talk, please?”

Gabi had one of his worse episodes happen to him-- it was the holidays when he felt it starting to get worse, knowing the inevitable was about to come. He had been on such a high after moving that it was bound to happen. And he knows he should feel better that he was back to working but the whole time, he was thinking about Luca and how he hasn’t seen him since they told each other that they liked each other. His first day back at work, he was already waiting for the other man to come by, Besito on his lap with the usual coffee and pastry for Luca on the table.

“A naked man in your living room that you can kiss and kiss,” Luca repeated with a soft chuckle while his hand never left Gabi’s hips, “I can give you that. Unless you prefer that we stay semi-clothed, I take you on a date, then we get naked. Or we can do both, naked now, naked laer, I don’t mind.” He was borderline naked almost night for work, it wasn’t something that bothered him at all. “Your choice.”

“I mean, wha-- wait, you want to take me on a date.” Gabi pointed out, surprised that the other man would even think about bringing him on a date. It was a surprise that he really wasn’t expecting. And maybe they should probably get back on track and not scare away Luca. “We can stay semi-clothed because I want to do everything right.” He answered with restrain though he thinks he made the right choice.

“I don’t think so. There is no way you could successfully run your cafe if you were stupid. It takes a lot of smarts to be able to run a successful business, especially since you also have to make sure you separate the cats from everything else. It’s not easy.” Luca immediately noticed the way Gabi was playing with his shirt, and he used it as an excuse to pull it off. “I did volunteer to get naked, you aren’t wrong. Is that something you’d like?”

Gabi didn’t want to tell Luca that the reason why he currently had the business was because it was a decision he made during one of his manic episodes. And now he was stuck with the business and he didn’t regret buying it at all. He was struggling to go through it but he loved it anyways. That, and he got to meet Luca through it. “I mean, I wouldn’t mind a naked man in the living room. That I get to kiss and kiss.”

“It does, it does,” Luca confirmed. He had no issue with agreeing, especially not if it made Gabriel happy. Besides, there wasn’t much of a reason to argue about it, not in the context they were currently standing in anyway. “I don’t think you’re dumb at all, Gabi, maybe a little silly, but not dumb. On the other hand, I will absolutely agree that you’re a pretty face. I’m not sure there is somebody that can argue with it,” he cupped the other’s cheek with a smile, “What would you like to do right now?”

Gabi laughed because it was ridiculous that Luca was agreeing with him. Though it was very sweet that the other man would be doing so no matter how confusing he was. “Oh, definitely dumb but that is okay. I know I am.” The chef was used to it so he didn’t mind it though. Being asked what they would do right now, they started playing with the edge of Luca’s shirt. “You did say you were volunteering to get naked.”

“That is all that matters,” Luca murmured. He didn’t need to understand every intricacy of the way Gabi’s mind worked, he would simply appreciate it. After all, no matter how abstract or silly, it was what made Gabi himself. “This is true, it helps me quite a bit, but my original career path was a doctor of audiology. I figured if I was inserting myself into the deaf community in some ways, it would only be respectful to learn how to communicate in the ways of the community. Not that everybody knows ASL, but still,” he shrugs, “I can be both? Funny.”

“It makes sense, it really does!” Gabi exclaimed before laughing softly. They probably didn’t make a lot of sense with a lot of things but that’s just how his mind works most of the time. Hearing about Luca’s original career path made him surprised because it was completely different from what he was doing now. From doctor to a stripper. Maybe he would ask about it at some point. “You can be both because you are. I can only say I’m a pretty face though because everyone knows I’m dumb.” They joked.

“Is that really the criteria for knowing Spanish?” Luca teased. He started to pull Gabi from the kitchen by the grip he had on his waist. They weren’t making the hot chocolate just yet so they could play around a little and not worry about it being cold. “I’m not sure if you can say I speak sign language, but I know it. For my original career path it would have been necessary…clearly things have changed.” Once not in the kitchen, Luca kissed Gabi yet again. “I know, I look like just a pretty face,” he teased.

“I mean, it makes sense to me already so...” Gabi shrugged as he looked at Luca even though it really didn’t seem like it would make sense to other people. But the Spaniard didn’t pride himself in being smart or making common sense at all. He let himself get pulled towards the living room, raising his eyebrows in surprise. “Well, I’m sure ASL is still necessary, just not for your job as a stripper though.” He was already distracted by the kiss, pulling the other man as close as he could. “You’re smart and a pretty face, don’t be dumb.”

“Is that true though? Do you know for a fact that I don’t speak Spanish?” Luca was just teasing, because he didn’t speak Spanish, but he wasn’t sure Gabi actually knew that. “Do you know what languages I do speak?” Not that is actually mattered, they didn’t need to speak anything other than English, and he didn’t think they had any other language in common anyway. “Do I need to pull you out of the kitchen so we don’t break rules?”

“If you do, you would have replied to me in Spanish already.” Gabi knew that logic was faulty but it made sense to him right now. Maybe Luca does know how to speak Spanish and it would be a pleasant surprise. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to handle that at all. “English. Korean... Do you speak another language? Because that is really hot.” He blurted out without even thinking twice about it. “C’mon, it’ll be more comfortable in the living room anyways.”

“Were those actually not meant for me, or did you want to play a little coy about it?” Luca was starting to think that Gabi actually hadn’t meant to send it to him, where at the time, he had believed Gabi was trying to be teasingly sneaky. Most people would have done it one purpose while pretending, but maybe Gabi was a little bit of a disaster. He didn’t have too long to consider it before Gabi kissed him, and that was perfectly fine with Luca. It allowed him to wrap his arms around Gabi’s waist and pull him tightly to his body.

“Those were definitely not for you because you definitely don’t speak Spanish. If it were meant for you, I would’ve spoken in English.” Gabi replied, even though he didn’t think he’d have the courage to actually ask Luca that. He wanted to make a good impression but he still messed it up anyways. Letting those thoughts go, he let himself get pulled closer, wrapping his arms around Luca as they kissed.
