Paul Wortman, Gabriel Wortman’s father mentioned to police that he was beat up by his son during a vacation trip in Cuba. Gabriel had beat his father up brutally till his face was “smashed up” and he lost a bit of vision in one of his eyes. Despite this, Paul did not try to fight back.

The trigger: according to the statements given by Gabriel Wortman’s wife, Lisa Banfield along with other family members, a heated argument occurred when Gabriel brought up how he was emotionally and physically abused as a child from his father, while his father denied all the allegations.

After the beating, Paul told Lisa Banfield, to leave him saying the following, “I was a bastard to my wife, I was a bastard to my son, and [he's] gonna do the same thing to you." —Paul to Lisa.

Gabriel had an obsession with the RCMP. At first, he wanted to become a police officer himself. He never did but, his interest for the RCMP never went away. Rather, he had a strange growing hobby of collecting real items the police would use.

He hated authority such as the police, but he wanted to control. Wearing that police uniform, owning police gear, gave him a sense of control as if he had authority power over people. Despite this, he never respected their authority. Gabriel firmly believed that he was superior to the police.

Gabriel also held a grudge against the RCMP. Prior to the attack, someone broke into his property, he believed that the police never handled the situation well enough. He began to hate the police, even mentioning to someone prior that he wanted to “kill a cop”

During his rampage, Gabriel used a fake police car and real RCMP uniform to trick people into trusting him, allowing him to carry out his crimes.

When Gabriel Wortan’s dad, Paul Wortman, found about the death of his son, along with the attack. He was devastated till the point he reached out for medical help.

“I am seeing a psychiatrist now because I have been in the hospital with my heart …. while I was in there I broke down,” Paul Wortman said, “I was contemplating suicide if you want to know the truth. I am on medication now and I have just finished crying.”

Paul spoke to police 3 weeks after Gabriel’s rampage. When confronted about Gabriel’s upbringing, he said that he had never physically abused his son. Rather he said that Gabriel grew up in an environment where there was more screaming going on.

“I never hit Gabriel, but I would be yelling, which is probably just as bad as hitting,” he said. “I had a hell of a temper.” —Police Interview with Paul Wortman.

The police didn’t ask if he had ever emotionally abused Gabriel and his wife. Neither did they ask him about the violence Gabriel experienced growing up. Paul stated that him and his wife would’ve done everything to prevent the rampage. Evelyn, Gabriel Wortman’s mother didn’t speak to police, nor did she accept interviews.

The violence in Gabriel Wortman’s family goes way back to George Wortman, Gabriel Wortman’s great grandfather. When George Wortman died, his children were traumatized till the point they refused to mention his name. All of his children were violent, treating their partners and children as George treated them. “Abused children often become abused parents,” —Neil Wortman.

There were various moments in Gabriel’s childhood that affected him throughout his life leading up to the attack. When Gabriel was around two-years old, his father, Paul, decided that he didn’t need his favourite blanket, so he burnt it in front of him. Another time, Paul gave him a gun and told him to shoot him. Younger than ten-years old, Paul made Gabriel kill their dog. During Gabriel’s rampage, he had shot serval dogs.

I often think about how different Gabriel Wortman’s life could’ve played out if he was not raised in an abusive environment. While I don’t solely blame his childhood, it undoubtedly was a factor. Most often, kids who are abused feel powerless. This resulted in Gabriel’s controlling and manipulative behaviour, especially towards his partner.

If his father was not abusive, the main drive for his anger would be gone. While we cannot guarantee that he would’ve been a saint, a stable home makes it less likely for someone to commit a crime such as Gabriels.

While they both committed a crime, the crime is not their main focus. They are musicians who so happened to commit a crime, not criminals who happened to make music on the side. Ultimately, more people talk about their impact in music
