i think my main problem w high fantasy elves is that they often take their template from tolkien elves, which are elves designed to compliment/”fit in” with classic english (notions of) forests, while as an aussie my idea of forests are 

scrubland

and rainforests

and i dont know about you guys but they just give me a really different feel as to the types of elves that would live there

#for scrubland!elves i see like#skin in all shades of dusky brown#more hunters and meat eaters than the way traditional elves ping me#theyre long limbed and sharp toothed and they can stand still and silent better than any other#even their motions are sharp and swift unlike the graceful flowing of rainforest!elves#their creator gods are also water gods#rainforest!elves have shining dark skin and they wear leaves twisted into their hair#theyre omnivores but their diet is heavy in fruits#their eyes are large and see far and well in dim lighting#they move constantly graceful and smooth like flowing water#their dead loved ones walk in the stars#of the two encountering scrub elves is more likely to be fatal but rainforest elves settle firmly in the uncanny valley#dae talks#elves yooooo

ok this would be a really cool project to design a bunch of elves for all the different kinds of forests

imagine bony mangrove swamp elves with big webby fingers and toes and short salt-crusted hair, or the elves of the pacific northwest rainforests who are big fat bastards in cedarbark cloaks and bearskins
