Mami Said by Ronnie Triminio
I touched my red swollen lips. How they blistered and burned, like walking barefoot in a Macy’s parking lot.
I smeared my lips with a cool red chapstick. More and more until they were a bright cherry red.
I licked my lips, hmm, strawberry candy! Red is god’s gift.
Mami said to come outside, so I skipped freely wearing nothing but lovely red. Si, Mami?
Smack. Nina! Estupido. She pulled me inside so that my cousins couldn’t see me crying and wiped my face of the devil’s red lipstick.

Modern Modernity Part I by Thomas Kearnes
It’s stupid to fall for gay guys. That’s what my sister Suzanne said while she scoured the stovetop. But Grover is different, I told her. He wasn’t like all the men who fucked me over, men like Ariel’s father, whatever happened to him.

The Drunk and the Dreamer
Had he walked in with a bonus, a raise, carnations, an affair— one thing to satisfy his want to be needed, her need to be wanted
The house would creak, crack, and thaw out Like ice cubes dropped into a glass of iced tea—snap, shard, and eventually attach onto one another.

Jack Daniels by Lauren Beleut
Jack Daniels speaks to the broken hearted girl with bright blue eyes and natural red hair—
Face as empty as an alcoholic’s shot glass.
She’s watching, waiting for the bartender to fill her glass to the brim,
Willing to pay him extra for a couple free drinks—
Not with the money she doesn’t have but with
The lips she knows how to use,
The thong she knows how to pull aside, and the
Meaningless moans she can make in the backseat of his car.
Jack Daniels murmurs in the drunken ear of the broken hearted girl with bright blue eyes and natural red hair.

The Silent War We Wage by Melissa Mendelson
I don’t like to call myself a Road Rager. I would rather the open road. I prefer the white, fluffy clouds and bright blue sky. Empty pavement. Instead, I get the blaring headlights and the cars swerving into the opposite lane just to cut me off.

Millennial Lullaby by Carla Mary McNamara
Chitter chatter and poisonous banter Of young bloods trapped in a room. A vigorous flutter of papers and pens and mouthing off to the teacher just because they can.

Cats on the Roof
After hours of listening In darkness, I’m at last Hearing what stillness between Sounds has been telling me:
Let it remain a mystery

Angry Young Man, Dipsomania, and Other Poems by Guapo Magnifico
An orange light peaks through the window Hatefully greets another day. He pulls the red sleeping bag over his head Wishing this nausea would subside.
Fresh scrapes across his knuckles And violent, violet bruises on his knees— Just another average morning For this angry young man.
