Little detail I noticed rewatching fury road: Nux and Slit both fail at the start of the film for completely opposite reasons and it defines their roles for the rest of the film.

Nux has a chance to end the entire film right at the start. He pulls up next to the rig and has his gun on Furiosa. But he doesn’t take the shot, because Furiosa’s lieutenant, Ace, is in the way. Twice Nux yells “crew, get out of the way!” Instead of firing his gun.

If he were really the fanatic ruthless soldier he’s supposed to be, he could have instantly shot Ace, then maybe succeeded in shooting Furiosa. But his inherent compassion means he doesn’t shoot. That same compassion will define his change throughout the movie as we see Nux is less in it for the joe religion then he is for acceptance. He cares about the people around him, wants love, and eventually finds it from Furiosa’s group.

On the other hand there’s Slit, who really IS the ruthless soldier of the patriarchy who cares nothing for the people around him. We see that in how he treats Nux, and how he alone of the War Boys scorns Morsov’s suicide jump. Slit makes a mistake too, but it comes from sadism, not compassion. Instead of killing max immediately when they decide to move him to the back of the car, Slit takes a second to gloat over max and say some line about saying goodbye to his head. This moment of gloating gives Max the chance to surprise him, and knock him off the car.

Nux fails because of his compassion, and it leads to him being on the war rig, finding acceptance, and people who will remember him. Slit fails because of his cruelty, and stays with joe’s army, eventually dying a sad futile death all alone. They start in the same place but meet completely different ends thanks to the choices they each make.
