Off the Grid: Movement Workshop and Field Trip
Sep 27, 2014
Led by Elliott Maltbyâa designer and founding partner of thread collective, a collaborative design studio that explores the seams between building, art and landscapeâthe movement workshop encouraged participants to adapt and apply the arbitrary, rule-based systems that underpin Gainesâs works. Participants animated the unique grid of Manhattan, calling on and channeling the themes of conceptualism.

The grid's mythic power is that it makes us able to think we are dealing with materialism (or sometimes science, or logic) while at the same time it provides us with a release into belief (or illusion, or fiction).

Even the people whom I really likedâCage or LeWittâwere visionaries, but they were suspicious of letting language get out of control. It was important to protect visual or sound culture from that. I was just the opposite. For me, an artwork is the impetus for letting language get out of controlâletting the dynamic experiences happen.
Charles Gaines to Courtney J. Martin, "Five Will Get You Ten: A Conversation with Charles Gaines"
September 27: Artist Charles Gaines has converted famous speeches by Malcolm X and others into musical scores. Hear them brought to life by a nine-piece ensemble in this premiere event.Â

...Grids are not only spatial to start with, they are visual structures that explicitly reject a narrative or sequential reading of any kind.

All Things Grids: In addition to the work of Charles Gaines, this blog will highlight the work of artists who incorporate the grid. United by the theme of a âgrid aesthetic,â the works featured represent a cross section of movements, generations and materials, and demonstrate the varied use of the grid in modern and contemporary art.
