I'm sitting here thinking again about the Foundation books once again; in particular how odd it is for Bayta and Toran to be immortalized as these great heroes of the whole [waggles fingers] Mule era, even receiving a lifelong pension that I believe their descendants also received. It has struck me as odd since I first read it. If anything, you'd expect them to be enmired by suspicion and scape-goating, either unable to return to the Foundation or doing so hounded by rumor. It wasn't until now it dawned on me this was probably the Mule's own work. By which I mean it was likely the Mule himself who orchestrated the narrative to their benefit, making them the grand heroes opposite his grand villainy. Especially when you consider Bayta is lauded most highly between the two. She's, like, THE hero of that era. And, she's someone the Mule genuinely loved, the only human connection he ever had in his life, the one person whose emotions / memories he didn't manipulate. It makes complete sense to me he would stack things in her favor and make her the hero of the story before his death despite that having zero benefit for him, despite falling out with her after she learned the truth of his identity, despite having no contact with her ever again.

#OOC / HOLLY.#not to diminish her achievements in any way mind you but you have to understand the effect the Mule has / had on people even after his deat #with him in the picture it wasn't just that you couldn't trust your neighbor. you couldn't trust YOURSELF #god Bayta and the Mule are everything to me #he was so terrifyingly meticulous and ruthless toppling empires in mere moments #yet he was undone by one thing and one thing only: genuine affection from another human being #tangentially related but y'all know how there's that princess x knight animation trend going around #where the princess is getting married but she's obviously not happy and she glances over to a knight #and he sheds like one tear beneath his helmet silently and she has to turn away #well I saw one that was princess x jester and it socked me in the jaw how Bayta and the Mule that is #I have a lot of things to say about the Mule as always but I won't be saying any of them tonight I am simply !! about him always

Admittedly, I started hitting a bit of a depressive slump over the holidays (as I do every year). I then tried to ignore it (as I do every year), and that bit me in the ass (as it does every year). Got all kinds of exhausted and disappeared from the face of the earth. But, I'm far more alive now and will work on creeping back into activity! I won't make promises about what I'll get done first, but y'know . . . I'm alive lmao

On the one hand, Thrawn being a big secret even within the empire is delicious in its own way. On the other hand, nucanon turning him into a boogeyman, a looming mythic threat outside the galaxy, the almost prophesied warlord and emperor to come, the dream of a dead empire and nightmare of a newborn republic — excellent.

It's crazy too that like. the rapid deterioration of Hanako and Yorinobu's relationship really does hinge on Goro. There are other complicating factors, but really it was him. And not his arguments, mind you. Hanako's not naive. She knows what's up even if Yorinobu is trying to keep her in the dark. Rather it's the way Goro's well-earned reputation, not just within the company but within the family, caused Yorinobu to react. If anyone else but Goro had taken her, Yorinobu might not have gone in so guns blazing. Still in force but not that recklessly. And if anyone else but Goro had taken her, another hypothetical kidnapper would not have put themselves in mortal peril to "protect" her from her rescuers. It's that combination of Yorinobu's team coming in hot and Goro putting his life on the line — even dying if V doesn't come back for him — to protect her, which would cause the strike team to double down, that really solidifies for her that the one person she thought she could trust in the whole world her whole life has turned on her and wants her dead. It's a massive misunderstanding born from love and a desire to protect.

#OOC / HOLLY.#I'm normal about it #does not help the team was undoubtedly ordered to eliminate Goro at the same time #like again there are other contributing factors particularly just who they are / have had to be as people #but it really comes down to that one moment and a misunderstanding #I think Yorinobu should win and implode Arasaka from within #but that it comes at the price of his sister . . . 🥲

I was gonna try to loop my musings on death / funerals, etc. back to my characters here, but it just led to me once again being distraught over the tragic relationship of Hanako and Yorinobu

#OOC / HOLLY.#tragic siblings will get me every fucking time #for me it's made even more tragic by the fact that they're actually in their 70s - 80s #despite looking in their 30s - 40s due to modifications #they went their whole lives only truly being able to trust and rely on each other #EIGHT FUCKING DECADES OF THAT #only to have a wedge driven fatally between them in a matter of days. maybe weeks.#it breaks my heart so bad that Yorinobu sent a strike team to get Hanako back from Goro #but she misinterpreted it as him trying to kill her #which led to her making a move against him #that either leads to him dying in her arms or her dying #in some ways it was inevitable but it is so. so. tragic.#Yorinobu finally gets what he's worked for for so long. finally gets to a chance to dismantle Arasaka and his father's toxic machinations #only for it to come at the cost of the one person who truly cared and vice versa #the Arasaka family makes me want to eat drywall by the fistfuls I'm obsessed #they're an imperial court drama but in 'modern' day business #Goro you shouldn't have kidnapped that grandma none of this would've happened skjhg

I still need to make actual progress on my ME:A replay and reread Initiation, but man!! The way Cora still struggles to believe they can have a place, they can belong. Like first off, it's very telling they believed they'd only have a shot at that if they went to an entirely different galaxy, but even then there are moments they frame it as making a place for people like them, "for those that come after" type of thing. As if they're afraid to even hope they could belong somewhere. Their entire life has taught them otherwise.

#OOC / HOLLY.#there is this deep part of them that thinks if they can just be good enough they can be tolerated perhaps loved and it's so !!#they're not the self-pitying sort but god they'd have reason to be #I can't just talk about the down stuff about them all the time they have lighter qualities / moments #like when they kissed SAM. I will always cherish that moment lol

Tangentially related, there's a lot to be said for the similarities between mages in DA and biotics in ME, and to me Cora is one of the most DA mage-coded biotics in ME. She's like. an offshoot of Grey Warden path Bethany, y'know? They're in the same vein.

#OOC / HOLLY.#the Bethany comparison isn't 1:1 but it was the closest I had for short hand #but setting that aside #Cora lives in constant fear of themself because they've had to #they are aware of their power and accepting of it but in a way that you're aware + accepting of a rabid tiger locked in the same room as yo #the finest control over their biotics and their own emotions and reactions is so important to them #the most microscopic slip threatens to makes them spiral #the tiniest loss of control aboard their parents' ship could've killed them all and they lived with that weight every day #the burden they were. the danger they were. and the moment they turned eighteen #their parents dumped them off with the Alliance military and dipped. I've compared Cora to a changeling child before and I am still right #even with the Alliance they were too much. couldn't be handled. couldn't be taught. so they were put in an asari exchange program #and their perfect control took on a new slant. yes they were taught to hone their abilities in a way no human could teach them #but they were also taught that it would never be enough. that they would never measure up.#they would always be too much for humans but not enough for asari and nothing to anyone else #people poke fun at the way Cora is proactive about reassuring Ryder re: their biotics or apologizing for tiny biotic slips #even if Ryder is a biotic — but you don't know how deep that fear runs in them. how it's in the foundation of their life.#they know they're powerful. they know if they slip people will die. they know everyone must be living on edge with them around.#they know not even their own parents could live at ease with them and everyone in their life has rejected them at the first opportunity #and they know that has always come back to their biotics and to control and whether their use outweighs the danger their existence presents #'Cora's so rigid' Cora has lived in constant terror of themself since childhood and is remarkably chill considering that #they were also almost completely deprived of a childhood and social interaction so like. shockingly well adjusted all things considered #their closest friend is an AI who got wiped once but still

I’m kinda glad the show didn’t go this direction because it wouldn’t quite have fit the vibe, but I love that in the Foundation books, the Empire at least by the end, at a point where Earth had been lost / forgotten for literal thousands of years, has nevertheless slipped back into what we’d consider archaic modes of dress and speech. Depending on era, you’ll see powdered wigs or doublets or painted faces. Nobles with their courts, court jesters, what to us would be archaic modes of speech, courtly love, literal serfs and peasants, even feudalism. It’s really fascinating to see, particularly with the Empire falling into a state of stagnation + decay + dying. It is this hyper futuristic empire that spans millions of worlds, with a capital planet that is a planet-encompassing city, with quadrillions of citizens, in a future so far removed from origins on Earth it’s regarded as myth — yet it has reached such a point of decay that it’s looped back around to something almost medieval and will soon fall entirely, creating a Dark Ages projected to span 30,000 years and can only through difficulty be shortened to 1,000 years. I love it.

#OOC / HOLLY.#MOBILE.#the juxtaposition between the Empire and the Foundation / fringe worlds #re: dress and speech and general culture is so!! good!!#because comparatively the Foundation and then the Federation it grows into #are very modern (according to the period the books were written)#on the rare occasions they cross with the empire or with people from the core worlds #it is such a glaring contrast #even the way people speak and dress and structure their societies etc in the core worlds (ie Trantor) after the empire has fallen is so !!
