Women who persevered through the economic and psychological depression of wartime single-handedly kept the towns and cities afloat since 1914. Nowhere moreso than in Salford, where struggling families were taken care of by those they formerly looked down on - ne'er-do-wells, criminals, ladies of the night. In the heart of the borough, rival groups have emerged to challenge the erstwhile dominance of the Devine family, and rivalries are about to turn explosive…

GALLOWS HYMN ❖ CANON SPOTLIGHTS THE CHECKERS

A new and elusive presence on the streets of Salford, the mere mention of the name Checkers sparks intrigue for regular citizens and danger for the Devines and Scuttlers alike. Based all around the borough, the gang predominantly favours the use of stealth and ambushes, and are often identifiable only by their black and white checked scarves.

Only the Checkers themselves know their identities and their true purpose: To incite war between the Devines and the Scuttlers, weakening them enough that they might be taken down by Salford Borough Police. Most members are either new recruits or officers from out of town, thereby making them unidentifiable as law enforcers. They also count some disillusioned gang members and informants among their number, enabling them to pass as a regular gang while obtaining intelligence on rival gang activities.
