EPIK HIGH FT HYUKOH // HOME IS FAR AWAY (PT I)
home is far away
“I get more and more scared I’m running but my feet and heart forget why Dreams just become baggage now My only hope is to just leave it behind and run Rushing myself to take just one more step But when I looked up, I’m right in front of a cliff I look back and all these expectations are lined up behind me It pretends to support me but it’s pushing my back”

What are the uses of repetition in a poem?
Repetition is a knife stroke on a whetstone. An idea may be cyclical, sharpened with precision and patience until the shine is reflective. However, reckless angles and effortless pushing may do more dulling and harm than good. Repetition is applicable with any aspect of a poem, from sounds to phrases to motifs to the shape of the stanza itself, and its true ingenuity comes with its ability to give synergy to texts that at first glance were simply additive.
Writers have many tools are their disposal for repetition and can attempt to do so at their own style. Mr. Thomas’s Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night is a methodical youth, bursting with ideas revolutionary and moribund, unwilling to succumb to such ways of the natural consensus. The reoccurring first-line and third-line assonance in “-ight” is basic to the ear, but delightfully, thoughtfully frank in its context. The first-line comparisons between each stanza shoes differences in the beginning letters, showing more of a regeneration rather than repeat. Furthermore, the third-line end rhymes have an echoing effect. Thomas uses this familiarity in pronunciation to speak of a life reconsidered before dusk, and too late. This is also seen at the beginning of the first and third lines, respectively, with men being subject to such a humiliation called regret. “Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight / Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Ms. Brooks’s my dreams, my works, must wait till after hell is a lyrical piece that sways at each alliteration as the speaker speaks of life and identity. From “drag” and “dregs” to “puny” and “pointed,” Brooks makes the reader sway and stagger at a labor, hopeless and for naught. This is also emphasized with the motifs of honey and bread is introduced, only to appear at the end once more, as if to reflect a sensation of delight invested “In little jars and cabinets” but ending in nothing, as the “taste” has “turned insensitive.” “I am very hungry. I am incomplete.” gives anaphoric resonance. While the sentences are complete clauses, the subject his/herself is not. Ultimately, starting from anew, ending with unfortunate numbing.
Why might poets stretch the definition of a poem?
All semester, we have studied and attempted various forms that defined poetry over centuries of Western and Eastern literature, many dealing with measured rhythms and structured rhyme schemes. Human speech naturally thrives in rhythm. Techniques found in a majority of forms studied, however, are arguably otherwise. As seen through MacLeish’s Ars Poetica and my first response, poetry is the art of showing and connecting. With progressions of ages growing disinterested in “traditional” Western poetry as it is “archaic,” poets, more so by nature than obligation, have expanded the definition of poetry to continue connecting to an audience that has demanded novelty in technique and empathy.
One expansion is breaking the shackles that are measured rhythm and grammatical rules. In Freely Espousing, Schuyler visualizes thinking to a tee, a sporadic event everyone can empathize with. In the process, he rids the new-sentence capitalization commas normally placed for pause, replacing the latter with breaks into brand new lines, playing into this free (pun-intended) flow of thought. “of the easily torn, untrembling banana leaf / or Quebec! what a horrible city / so Steubenville is better?” Negligence of capitalization is common until Schuyler finds an important to be made, as seen with the contradictory statements “No, it is absolutely forbidden / for words to echo the act described; or try to. Except very / directly / as / bong. / And tickle. / Oh it is inescapable kiss.”
Another expansion, paradoxically, is reduction. Ruefle’s A Little White Shadow takes editorial omission quite literally. This, however, results in heavier weights found in word as it is read or spoken, taken out of context of their original intention, mostly bringing a personal ground to stand on instead of making readers simply bystanders. In one of her excerpts, Ruefle immediately starts off with “seven centuries of / sobbing / gathered in the twilight.” and echoes this phrase with an ending of “borrow so little from / the past / as if they were alive,” to remind readers of the cyclicality of grief, death, and civilizations all in less than thirty words.

HAHAHA
i posted a screenshot of a student gov candidate’s tweet which basically said he doesn’t want andrew jackson replaced by harriet tubman on the $20 bill bc she’s useless.
so after that, i had a few people point out to me that the tweet was made in 2015 & that “3 years is a lot of time for a person to change.” i agree, 3 years is a lot of time to change.
HOWEVER, i’m not seeing this change. the candidate simply put all of his social media on private & hasn’t said anything about the tweet, even when directly asked by students. if this candidate truly changed, he would’ve immediately addressed the concerns. instead, he’s hiding behind his VP.
i’m tired of excusing people’s bigotry just bc “they could’ve changed.” & i’m tired of the apologists trying to excuse everyone’s bigotry. actions speak louder than words, & i haven’t seen anything yet.
The people trying to defend him = male privilege and just plain stupidity.
