Fake normal mapping on textures and other tricks for MMD
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to improve textures with a normals-on-texture technique I’ve developed. I’ll focus on game ports, since they need it the most.
I have a suspicion Rick Griffin has played THUG2...
To keep you in the know, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, or THUG2, was a skateboarding game released in 2004, and if you've heard of THUG Pro, THUG2 is the game on which it runs.
I say he might have played it after looking back through his DA, his comic Housepets!, and other art he's posted over the years and finding clues (mostly weak ones tbh) that might indicate he played the game—which, oh boy, do I hope he did cause I got something to show him.
Exhibit A (my strongest clue): Guana
The strongest clue I've found thus far are his most recent illustrations of his OC, Guana, posted right before the first ever HP comic strip.
Honestly, the fact that of all skateboard deck brands Rick chose Sobe makes me think that Rick played THUG2 because that's the company whose logo you see on Mike Vallely's shirt. Although I wasn't alive back then, let alone old enough to learn how popular was Sobe among skaters, I can kinda guess that compared to other, more renowned brands like Birdhouse, Baker, Flip, etc., Sobe wasn't as popular given there were less decks of theirs in the game compared to those brands and that no sponsor video existed of them in the game. That is to say Sobe is a really specific pick. Either Rick just wanted a skater OC and got lucky in finding a reptile themed deck brand, or... maybe he did play THUG2 and that's how he came to know the brand. I don't know.
Exhibit B: Housepets!
How could a romcom furry comic pull any reference to a skateboarding game? Well, it didn't, but there are references throughout the comic that serve as parts of the big picture, that being the possibility Rick played THUG2.
Clue 1: Both Barcelona and Australia are actual places; the former only being mentioned by Tarot a few times, and the latter being where Tarot and Bailey were taken to finish the Cosmic Game.
The thing is, both Barcelona and Australia were made into THUG2 levels.
Clue 2: Masked chainsaw killer trope...
...which was also seen in THUG2.
Clue 3: Zach refers to a rap song, whose lyrics did Rick feature in the alt text.
If that lyric didn't ring a bell, it's from the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," which was actually featured in the THUG2 soundtrack.
Again, not one of these clues on their own can lead me to believe Rick may have played THUG2, but rather the fact that I can tie all these references to the same game.
Exhibit C: Non-Comic Art
There's not much of his art outside the comics that I know of which can somehow support my suspicion. There is this, a sketch of Miles' cubs as a reference to Jackass.
Honestly, how can you not talk about THUG2 without discussing Jackass, especially concerning the story of that game? THUG2 was an oddball among the NS (Neversoft) series in that the story was not based around skateboarding in the slightest, but instead was full of Jackass-inspired antics. Plus, Bam Margera starred in both the movie and the game.
As for the content of the image, there are a) shopping cart stunts, which actually could double as a reference to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (refer to Bam's pro challenge); and b) a ring of fire. Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" was also featured in the THUG2 soundtrack.
With all that being said,
I do think that Rick could be telling us that this game was a part of his early life. I don't know whether he outright confirmed that and, if he did, where and when it was stated. Still, even if my suspicion turns out to be false, I would still like to imagine that the author of one of my favorite-of-all-time comics has played a game from one of my favorite-of-all-time franchises.
Finally through with this game. I like how the game makes up for its shitty physics with a points (kudos) system that is VERY sensitive to slides. You won't even be sliding and you'll still get points as long as you don't countersteer, except in a manji drift of course.
I really recommend the Exige for any style challenge because it is well balanced and lightweight enough to easily pop its tail. For street races you can start off strong with the Feroce (not hard to achieve) if you're still breaking into the game's physics or into racing games in general. Otherwise, you can hop into a RWD if you REALLY know throttle control. Also, holding the line is imperative, and what I mean by that also includes almost scratching your car at every corner. You've got to know your braking times and turning speeds to really get good, and it only feels rewarding playing this game if you're really good.
When you get to the uppermost levels, where you should be seeing a 911 GT2 (that will viciously close your lead in most cases), taking 1st ASAP is imperative to victory, and doing that can be a PITA especially because of the pileups that happen at the first few corners. You just gotta get familiar with how the AI behaves so you drive through as cleanly as you can to get closer to 1st. Honestly, I was surprised the bonus level was easier in most cases than the invitational season (don't ask me about the Senso Ji overtake challenge). "Most cases" because the Central Park street race was HARD af, but it did have the same hack as Asakusa (the easiest in level 13 imo): slowing down before a hump around the tunnel then gently accelerating in a straight line afterwards.
I recommnd this game only for veteran racing game players.
I unlocked all cars (therefore all Medal Pursuit courses), unlocked very hard difficulty on both Quick and Arcade modes, and got to level 13 of Kudos challenge, yet Pall Mall is greyed out. This is just like the kei wagon driver from TXR3 who requires you to have 10 million yen to beat him, but you can't cause the game only allows you to have up to 9,999,999 yen.

I learned so much. I'm currently on weighting a model to the skater armature, and after that, I plan on working on its UVs and other texture export issues.
There were quite a few missed improv opportunities like boostplanting off the cinema sign, but to be fair, playing thumbstick isn't my forte (I'm a d-pad player). Still, creds to forgotPassword for the Mr. Wolf model, even if the KSK normals burn my eyes as always.
Ain't my character. It's just that CayenneRedd ported Chipflake into the game and I remembered the two Chipflake vids about Germany. Berlin was the level for this.
Funny how October 4 was also THUG2's release date exactly two decades ago. For the upcoming 4.2 update, either Jax or Pomni should totally be a secret skater.
Basically, the fist means the weapon can kill an enemy with just one successful strike.
This is a usable weapon in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Looks a lot like Death's scythes.
And seeing the Asman has the one-hit-kill ability, Ubisoft unknowingly predicted The Last Wish and Death himself almost 2 decades ago (2004 -> 2022). Death wields the Asman.
Just found out something abt the Prince that further proves this headcanon of mine.
"I can smell your fear from here."
"I just love the smell of fear."
The quotes roughly line up with the idea of smelling fear. Keep in mind that WW Prince was a very bloodlusted character as indicated in other dialogue provided in the first video, so there are noticable similiarities between Death and the Prince.
Still, only a headcanon cause, realistically, Ubisoft wouldn'tve known jackshit about Dreamworks for them to predict the movie.
It may of been a month and a half since that whole "gamers need to get comfortable with not owing there games" quote from a Ubisoft executive but no, you DON'T just say shit like that and expect me to pretend you didn't say that!
I just became a fan of KinitoPET after watching one of my oomfies play it. Not to mention, but just a few days prior, I was into Changed. And even before that, I was heavily interested in Ultrakill. What the hell is with me obsessing over games I don't have????
