What we're doing here

Hello! After seeing @noctua-an-owl's awe-inspiring thread of First Round Gameos¹ on the bird app, I realized that I could do the same thing over here, since tumblr is better suited for storage. We managed to hunt down 177 of the 417 First Season Gameos¹ released this August (plus three Jameos² for enrichment!). Our final total for Second Season Gameodens³ (and our extra special Gameossius⁴) is 235, Third Season Gameos¹ and Cameodens⁵ are trickling in every day, and summer blessed us with a short intense season of Gameonnas so we're close to 450 as of last count.

Still thinking about how Grace was always treated as disposable. Kicked out of his passion field for his honesty—underpaid as a (very good) teacher, to the point he can’t afford a car—left alone in a room full of argon with a sample that might kill him, while all the indispensable guys who put him there stood on the other side of the glass and watched. Shoved screaming into a mission that would kill him. And then, then this bonkers little alien who just met him gladly trades years off his life (via extended return mission) to save him. Runs burning through deadly air to keep him from dying. Chooses finally to weave their lives together forever and recreate Grace’s best dreams of Earth to make him happy. No wonder Grace told Rocky he doesn’t have to get him a gift, he’s given him everything. To one little spider guy, Grace is irreplaceable. That’s love.

Here are my questions: In Sandman S1 and S2, Despair’s vibe feels a bit different. Donna, how did you prepare for that? Would Despair ever tell Desire about Edwin? If DBD had a season 2, George, what would you do to prepare? If Despair and Edwin spent a whole day at an amusement park, what rides would they try? George: Uh, more questions. "In Sandman season one and two, Despair's vibe felt a bit different. Donna, how did you prepare for that?"

Donna: Mmm. It was very, very different. I think, erm… look, I think, just, when I got the script, you just have to, kind of, assess the situation, and just, kind of, go with the flow, really. There was… not a huge amount of prep? Because we've been in this world… well, I've been in this, you know, the Sandman world for the last, sort of, two, three years. So… and, in total, I think it's been four and a half years.

George: Wow.

Donna: From start to finish. So I think I knew as much as I needed to know about the character, but I'm… look, every day's a school day, and I could know more, of course. But yeah, I think… erm, the scripts are so good that, you know, once you learn your lines and-

[George sneezes loudly]

Donna: Excuse me!

George: Sorry! I've caught your hayfever.

Donna: That frightened me so much. Are you okay?

George: Yeah! Please, carry on, coz what you were saying was very interesting.

Donna: That was a lot. Very dramatic.

George: I know.

Donna: Whoa. Right. So, let's get back into that. Yes, the scripts are so well-written, obviously, so erm… it's just a pleasure to have those words in my mouth.

George: "And would Despair ever tell Desire about Edwin?"

Donna: Not at first, I don't think.

George: She'd want him to herself, would she?

Donna: Yes, she would, she would. But maybe… Desire would probably find out, one way or the other. Because I think Despair would be quite happy, erm, that she's… she's got a new "friend."

George: Mmm!

Donna: And Desire would, kind of, pick up on that. So maybe Desire would… be… following her? I don't know. Erm… I mean, who knows. Let's hope they get a spin-off show.

Donna: Yeah. Or maybe not!

George: Or maybe not! [Laughs] Um… what would I do to prepare… read the scripts. And, um… up my skincare routine, to try and look a bit younger again.

George: Um, but hey…

Donna: [laughs] That sounded awful from me, I was like [judgemental tone] 'yeah…'

George: [judgemental tone] Yeah, yeah…

Donna: No, you look fresh!

George: That's what make-up is for.

Donna: Yes!

George: Um… "For both, if Despair and Edwin spent a whole day at an amusement park…" oh, good question! "What rides would they try?"

Donna: Oh wow.

George: Um… let's do Thorpe Park, shall we?

Donna: Thorpe Park, yeah. Let's go for… erm…

George: I think Edwin would pick Saw.

Donna: Saw is fantastic.

George: I think they'd both get off on that.

Donna: I think they'd both get off on that.

George: Yeah…

Donna: They would like, erm… at, at, at the end, erm… a blood splatter.

George: And d'you know what else they'd both enjoy?

Donna: Go on.

George: A mirror maze.

Donna: [whispers] A mirror maze!

George: For different reasons.

Donna: For very…

George: Maybe they'd play cat and mouse.

Donna: Yeah, maybe.

George: [puts on a regional accent] Don't play the mouse card!

Donna: Don't play the mouse card. We are who we are. They are who they are!

George: Is as is [laughs]

Donna: Yes.

George: Um… "I always add food questions because I love hearing people talk about it, so if you could share one recipe or dish with each other, what would it be?"

Donna: Well, we know what we would have. We always have salmon…

George: We like salmon.

Donna: We love a salmon.

George: I'm gonna share a new one with you, though.

Donna: Oh my goodness! Right… oh, go on, I know.

George: It's rigatoni alla vodka.

Donna: Mhmm.

George: And it's shallots, erm… tomato paste, garlic, um… what else?

Donna: Salt, pepper.

George: Salt, pepper, chilli flakes, olive oil, and then some rigatoni. And double cream, and…

Donna: And vodka.

George: And a little bit of vodka.

[Donna clicks tongue]

George: And it's, yeah, it's just delightful.

Donna: Very nice. But we love… erm, we love a tomato.

George: We do.

Donna: We love a beef tomato, chop it all up, line it all up on a plate, salt, pepper… that's it. We'll have that as a snack one day.

George: Yeah.

Donna: Many days. We've… we've had that a lot. We went on holiday together recently, and that's all we had for lunch, really, didn't we?

George: Yeah, it was fresh, it was light.

Donna: Fresh! Fresh is fresh

George: It was us.

Donna: Yes! We definitely… d'you know what? When we had that, I think our skin was glowing.

George: Probably, I think tomatoes are good for the skin.

Donna: Yeah, yeah! We detoxed.

George: [clears throat] If you've got any skincare tips, Evelyn…

Donna: Oh please.

George: Do share.

Donna: Yes, yes please.

George: Listen, it's so nice to hear from you again, and we're sending all our love to Taiwan. Enjoy the sun, enjoy the heat. Take care.

the first minute is mostly talking about my degree (sadly I don't think I learnt many health hacks but I did learn seizure first aid and a whole lot about Alzheimer's and get to handle real human brains so there's that-)

George and Donna are so sweet together, I love that they've gained such a wonderful friendship out of the show...I also did not realise Despair wears crocs :p

Q1: What do you think Despair's plans were for her and Edwin's friendship?

Donna: Well, I think she would have definitely taken him under her wing and possibly been really good friends with him. I think she's possibly quite obsessed with him because he has a lot of issues, and I think she kind of, yes, she kind of fed on that, do you know what I mean?

George: Do you think she'd introduce them to any of her siblings?

Donna: Um, maybe later on in the line to Desire but, I think she probably would have kept him to herself.

George: Really?

Donna: Yes, I do.

George: Okay.

Q2: What was your favourite moment on set together?

Donna: Oh, we had a lot, actually. It was so funny, we had such a great time and from the first moment we met to the-, I mean, we only spent one or two days together, but it went really fast. And despite the scene being quite dark, off set we laughed a lot, and it was brilliant.

George: Yes, I agree. I think, because we'd done nearly six months of filming by that point, which was amazing, but Donna just brought a real fresh energy. And, I think, when you get to the end of the shoot, a lot of people, because, you know, the hours are long, in a great way, because we're all working really hard. And Donna just came in with this fresh energy which, I think, and so did Kirby, which I think gave everyone such a lift. And I remember everyone, all the producers and stuff, were so excited on the day because we were getting this Sandman crossover. Which, I think, they'd, kind of, dreamed of at the very, very beginning, so it was just, like, the perfect way to end on. And we got a friendship out of it as well.

Donna: We did.

George: Didn't we?

Donna: Yeah.

George: Which, it's who we are.

Donna: It's who we are.

George: We're not changing.

Donna: We're not changing.

George: Hello to the Dead Boy Detectives fandom, it is the Terrible Trio here. I'm with the lovely Donna and, of course, my noble steed Raffy.

Donna: Hello!

George: And just quickly, Anke, thank you so much for the cameo request, for being so generous and for partaking in this little... Dedwin? Cameo thing that we're doing for the next few days. I'm very excited to get into these questions, which are for the Dead Boy Detectives fandom at large. So, you've said: "Hi Donna and George, thanks so much for doing this, especially now when the fandom is grieving another kind of cameo that was sadly killed like the boys." [Laughs] "Anyway, let’s celebrate the show with some questions about costumes and set design instead."

Donna: Mmm okay.

George: Okay, I think this first question's for you, Donna.

Donna: Mm.

George: "George and Jayden described how collaborative working with the costume department was. Did you have a similar experience? And did you have any input into Despair’s outfit?"

Donna: Erm, I... didn't have much, to be honest. Only because I am very happy with what they chose for me, and I understood why. It was questionable with the Crocs, but you know what? I always go with comfort. So I was actually really happy. Fine, yeah.

George: Always, always. And it's slightly... they slightly changed it up, didn't they?

Donna: What? Oh yeah. Oh, for Dead Boys?

George: Between season 1 and season 2, as well.

Donna: Oh yes, season 1 and 2. Oh yeah, completely different in season 2, which was great. And yeah, actually I did have quite a lot of input in that, erm, because obviously Despair became quite glamorous, I guess.

George: Mmm.

Donna: And it was really nice to, kind of, wear some nice dresses along with the other siblings, you know?

George: Yeah.

Donna: I wasn't the odd one out, just wearing Crocs. But y'know I do miss the Crocs. I do miss the, the cardigan, actually.

George: Yeah! Well, it was an easy change, wasn't it?

Donna: It was an easy change, yeah.

George: "For both of you, what was the set of Despair’s realm like to work in?"

Donna: Ooh it was fantastic, wasn't it?

George: Oh my god.

Donna: Yeah. Well, remember that was the first time I saw Despair’s realm...

George: Yes.

Donna: In Dead Boys. So... we both got there, and it was... it was actually incredible to... to kind of...

George: It was all very white.

Donna: Yeah.

George: That's my memory of it.

Donna: Yeah.

George: And it was very exciting, because it was our last day, it's like... not necessarily saving the best til last, coz there were, as you know, amazing sets. The Agency was my favourite set, but there was, you know, Tragic Mick's and Esther's house and the rotating Tube carriage... but this one felt really epic. And I know that even Steve [Yockey], our showrunner, was so excited by it.

Donna: Mmm.

George: Because also it was kind of like a carbon copy from the comic books.

[Donna kisses Raffy's head]

George: So it was really like stepping into them. Which is like, you know, think of the magic of a theme park, and then times it by ten.

Donna: Mmm.

George: And then we get to, you know... a lot of the work for us as actors — this is one of the things about working in TV — a lot of the imaginative work is done for you, because it's there.

Donna: Yeah.

George: Which is really, really cool.

Donna: Yeah.

George: Um... "Were all the mirrors real or CGI? How were they suspended?" They were all real!

Donna: All real, on sort of fishing wire, I guess?

George: Yeah, then they would just erase them out.

Donna: Yeah.

George: But I spoke to the team and a lot of those mirrors came from Facebook Marketplace. Fun fact!

Donna: Mmm yeah.

George: Um, "George, how long did you spend in make-up to get the blood applied each time?" [Huffs thoughtfully] Probably... well, funnily enough, that is a funny story, because, because of schedule changes and things that just... happen, I was meant to wear that blood, in total, I think, once or twice. Donna: Mm.

George: And I think we ended up doing it four or five times.

Donna: What, our scene?

George: No, just... Edwin covered in blood.

Donna: Oh. Oh yeah. Of course, oh yeah yeah yeah, of course.

George: Because, from my memory there were three iterations of Edwin in Hell.

Donna: Oh yes, okay. George: So there was Edwin that was just a clean Edwin.

Donna: Yep. George: With unspoilt pyjamas. And then there was a half-clean Edwin, and there was fully bloody Edwin.

Donna: Mm. George:

And I had to get into fully bloody Edwin four or five times, so bless Candice [Stafford] and her team. But, by the end, she knew exactly what it, what was going on. But they have to be really, obviously, attentive with that, coz of continuity.

Donna: Mmm.

George: But it, yeah, I'd say it took a good couple of hours, but by the end, probably, I think Candice could probably do it in 45 minutes to an hour? Um but yeah she, Candice and her team were so great with all the special effects and all the gory stuff.

Donna: Yeah.

George: That was an absolute joy.

Donna: They were so funny. Honestly, we had such a hoot, didn't we?

George: Yeah.

Donna: Getting hair and make-up done, it was such a great time.

George: Yeah, we had a real laugh.

Donna: Yeah, we did.

George: But listen, Anke and all the Dead Boys fans, thank you for all the support. We love you lots, and we'll speak to you soon.

Donna: Thank you so much!

George: Bye!

Donna: Bye-bye! [To Raffy] Bye-bye!

George: It's George and Donna here, from The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives. I hope you've been well. I know that we have pronounced your name correctly this time, because I remember at one point, very erroneously, pronouncing it Ee-velyn, which is a mistake I won't be repeating. It's such a pleasure to see your name pop up again, thank you so much for your cameo request. I hope all is well in Taiwan, and that monsoon season has subsided. Let's get into your request. D'you wanna start us off, Donna?

Donna: Absolutely. Well, first of all, thank you so much for getting in touch. We're really, really excited to have your request, and hopefully this is a lovely message for you. Over to you, George.

George: So, you've said: "Hi Donna, hi George. Your joint cameo was definitely not on my 2025 bingo card." Neither, honestly, Evelyn. "I'm thrilled it's real." [Whispers] As are we. [Normal volume] "I'm so grateful we still get to hear more about them, even a year after Dead Boy Detectives aired." So, "for George..." Do you wanna read my questions out?

Donna: You go for it, coz you're very... you're a very good reader.

George: Okay. Donna: You're... you're good at this.

George: "After Charles pulled Edwin out of Hell, how does Edwin see the story of Orpheus and Eurydice now? Would he tell Charles how it really ends?" Ooh, this is a great question. I don't think I've been asked this before. Well, I mean, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice is always... the way it has been, I suppose. But it's different with Edwin and Charles, because obviously they both escape, rather than one of them being banished to Hell forever, so maybe... maybe it represents, for Edwin, a shift in his own story, and their own relationship dynamic. Because they've kind of broken the legend, they've... he's kind of finally, on his third... attempt, if I've got that right. Has he been to Hell three times or twice? Gosh. Sorry, brain fog. He's managed to... to get through it. So yeah. And for you, Donna...

Donna: Yes.

George: First question: "Does Despair know Charles? And, if so, what does she think of him?"

Donna: I don't think she knows Charles, if I'm honest. I think, as you well know, Despair just clocks in to seeing people in despair. So yeah, that's my answer.

George: She has a big client list, hasn't she?

Donna: She has a big client list.

George: "Do you think she has a favourite food? And how well does she handle spicy flavours?"

Donna: Does Despair have a favourite food, or do I?

George: Well, I think Despair, but...

Donna: Let's go for Despair.

George: It could be either/or.

Donna: I think Despair probably is, kind of, very meat-heavy.

George: Mmm.

Donna: Just meat.

George: And can she handle her spice?

Donna: She can handle spice.

George: Love that.

Donna: Not too much, just a little bit.

George: Just a little bit.

Donna: On a Friday and Saturday night, probably more. [Clicks tongue]

George: "And to both: Any fun stories from set or working together you'd like to share?" Um... I remember when we were getting our hair and make-up done...

Donna: Mhmm... George: We had some funny glasses, like the kaleidoscopic glasses, and we were just having a real hoot, weren't we?

Donna: That was very fun. Make-up times were very, very fun.

George: Very, very fun.

Donna: We actually had a hoot on set the whole time. And then obviously, when we had to get into character, and have a take, we just got in the zone. But sometimes it was, it was quite hard, because we, we wanted to laugh.

George: Yeah. Is as is, you know?

Donna: Yeah. We are who we are. And we had to... get the job done, I guess.

George: [laughs] We had to get the job done.

Donna: You know.

Ink and watercolour art of Edwin and his pony, probably during the summer of 1916 before Edwin returns to St. Hilarion’s for Michaelmas Term (for the last time). Hope the poor pony didn’t get drafted into the Great War, as so many horses were at the time.

Since George has mentioned Edwin’s friendship with horses in the past, I asked for some specifics (and other things) in a Cameo. Here’s my request:

Hi George, hope you’re well and had a wonderful time in California. We fans are super excited about Pismo Beach and also hoping for a glimpse of the Dead Boys in the 2nd season of Sandman. Hope Raffy copes well with the UK heatwaves. Speaking of animals, I have a question concerning Edwin’s horse/pony. You said you imagine it to be a grey mare. I’m working on a drawing of Edwin and his steed and was wondering whether “grey” means a white coat or dapple-grey. What part of the UK would Edwin have grown up in?
