So yes, Pete died fighting the Martians of Mars.. and he was entombed here... and at some point someone came in and stole the body becuse it might be immune to some kind of plague...

Deep down, I feel like they were going to have someone clone the body, and we would get a fully Clone Saga nod, but that got shot down, and so they had to pivot into something else.
