How did you do your Cole cosplay? Especially the pants?!
Okay as promised I’ll try to do my best to explain how to make cosplay! Yay! But just as a warning: I will fail.
Let’s start from the top shall we? Hat.
As someone has already guess the leather part of the hat is made out of foam using foam to faux leather techniques. Here is a wonderful tutorial: x You can google if you need more tips on how to make it but it’s really simple. I’m not sure if I recommend using foam though since it can be hard to work with and I had a hard time getting a nice shape to it. I’m going to make another hat for the next convention using some kind of fabric instead just to see if it works better.
Top part is paper mache. The helmet. I used a balloon as a base when I made it. If you’re going to do the same just make sure to make the balloon slightly bigger than your head! It’s much easier to make a helmet fit when it’s too big it doesn’t work the other way around. Don’t make the same mistake I did! (I made it too small and had to redo it…) The details where made with paper and glue, every cosplayers favorite tool.
If anyone wonders I used Biltemas own hobbyspray to color it. A grey base color and the metallic color is called ‘Hammarlack’. It’s some good shit I tell you and it wasn’t even expensive! Anyway on to the next part! Shirt!
I’m not sure if I got much to say about the shirt. It’s linen, the patches are some other fabric that I just had to threw together to finish the cosplay (it’s not even the right color). But yeah, a lot of hand stitching stuff together. The wonderful patch on the shoulder is actual leather taken from a bag that I bought at a second hand store. If you aren’t already looking for material for your cosplay at second hand I recommend you start doing it. Anyway, I made very tight zig-zag seams on the patch to create the pattern. Not sure if it’s the best way to go but I had very little time to have second thoughts when I made it. Moving on! Pants!
So many has been asking me about pants and I have no idea how pants actually work but I’ll try my best to explain the pattern. You basically take a lot of pieces of fabric and put them together in a zigzag pattern. I made mine 7-8 cm in width, which is a bit too wide if you ask me. 7 cm is pretty good but further down on the pants you can make them smaller.
I tried to make a gif of how to put together the patches if the first picture didn’t help. Out means outside of fabric, the side you want to show. Friendly reminder: Start from the top of the pants and work your way down! This pattern is hard to make the other way so go from the hips down! It also came to my attention 2 days before the con that the pattern on his pants actually change direction by the knees.
I’m pretty sad I missed this detail so here’s a heads up if anyone want to make a more authentic cosplay. This is from an AMAZING imgur album my friend linked me. It can be found here for all your reference needs!
Last of all we got the slits? That’s the actual name for them right? Not sure if I got much to say to you here other that good luck I’m not sure how to make them right. I used D-rings for the straps. Straps made out of the same material as the pants. If you’ve managed to get here you’ll pretty soon have something that looks like this:
And you’re done!
Oh right! The middle with the belt and all I didn’t include because it’s basically broken my whole cosplay is falling apart. It’s also made out of foam and the fabric is stretchy velour. I would prefer to use crushed velvet but I never found it in a color I liked. Get some belts from second hand AND THEN YOU’RE DONE!
Don’t get a haircut for a couple of months and you’re ready to go! Good luck!
