“Cannabis breaking thru Concrete”

I painted this piece the night I-502 won 55 to 45%, in the fall of 2012.
I heard the bill was shady from people I respect but I didn’t know what to think of it, but it already passed. Other than the stupid DUI for “driving on pot”, I wanted to believe it could be a constructive thing that opened up more paths to it becoming as normal as sun flowers. I felt like cannabis was finally growing through concrete. Thats why I painted this seedling crumbling the concrete with its roots, growing right through it. I guess the concrete is symbolic for the stupid ass laws that haunted and crippled the U.S. since an 85 year old man was a 5 year old boy. Crazy.
I felt like in the following weeks patients and growers started to get mix feelings when they slowly started to learn that the MMJ community was considered one of I-502′s competition. MMJ in Seattle became a new target. We all know what happens when you are the government’s competition…
On the 6th of December 2012 everybody in Washington was probably higher than they’ve ever been. I know for sure with my own eyes that the majority of the population was outside walking the streets downtown straight up lighting up, even a giant smoke out at the base of the Space Needle happened that night and many, many house smoke outs. It was ok that night to celebrate in the open and people were flexxin..
It’s crazy, today looking back I feel like this isn’t what anyone imagined it would end up like. The best of the best, growers, concentrate processors, collective gardens, and patients under the age of 21 (18+) in the Washington MMJ community just got ambushed nearly 2 years after I-502 became law. These are the final months of the good old days as Im writing this.
