“Mackerel Sky, Never Long Wet, Never Long Dry”

A popular old saying associated with mackerel skies goes: ‘Mackerel skies, mackerel skies, never wet for long, never dry for long.’ This means that mackerel skies indicate changeable weather, which could soon lead to either rain or clearer conditions.

This cloud formation consists of high-altitude clouds, particularly cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds, which form a patchy or wavy pattern. It indicates moisture in the upper atmosphere and often signals an approaching warm front or moving, unstable air, which frequently brings short-lived showers.

Although the rhyme is not precise enough to replace a modern digital forecast, it is a reliable short-term indicator of changing weather, particularly in maritime and coastal areas.

At sea, ‘never wet for long, never dry for long’ means unpredictability – a reminder to remain vigilant, shorten planning horizons and expect changes.
