Well damn
Gardening makes me feel like a kid again. I'm out here playing in the dirt. Behold my tiny beautiful world. I made it with my hands.
Mango the avocado plant, sunbathing.
New leaves growing!
going to start a "good plants for people with ADHD" masterpost based on what's survived me
i kept a spider plant alive for all four years of college which is remarkable because i barely kept me alive for all four years of college. highly recommend. not toxic to cats but may be hallucinogenic for them so that's hilarious. they grow little babies and it's cute. comes in a curly variety
both mini monsteras (monstera adansonii and raphidophora tetrasperma) are fabulous. mine grow like weeds
honestly their daddy is pretty robust too (monstera deliciosa)
pothos (epipremnum aureum). your mileage may vary on this one because i do inevitably murder them but they are supposed to be easy and they tend to droop when they need watering (helpful visual reminder). they come in a lot of fun varieties
heart leaf philodendron is really similar to a pothos but ime harder to kill
fittonia (nerve plant) is colorful and also tends to dramatically flop to the ground when it's been underwatered (but recovers quickly once you remember to water it). honestly i routinely forget about my mostly-fittonia barbie dream terrarium and it's thriving
ponytail palms. i toss mine outside in the spring/summer and after that it's happy for the rest of the year. cat friendly i think
syngoniums come in a crazy number of varieties in all kinds of colors and sizes, they're low light, and they're not fussy. this is the other resident of the barbie dream terrarium that i forget about all the time
aglaonemas are maybe a little higher maintenance than the others, but they're pretty and they can hang in there for quite a while. i had one for years that was very happy in my cubicle with no window
snake plants (sansevierias) are basically plastic plants but alive. i was shocked recently to learn that one of mine had grown babies because they basically do nothing (and need nothing) most of the time
ZZ plants are probably the ultimate ADHD plant. i forgot one in my antique booth for six months with no sunlight and never watered it and it's still happy as a clam. they come in a cute little mini variety called zenzi and a goth variety too
good luck and try not to kill them
I’ve never been able to identify my Henry or Arnie plants (I didn’t try to Google, but I got them from family and I’ve asked them if they knew) but it looks like they might both be heart leaf philodendron. This is lovely!
Also, OP’s story about the plant surviving college is nearly exactly how I describe Henry’s ordeal with my attempt at higher education. He’s a survivor.
A baby orchid. I haven’t named this little guy yet. This is the first bloom in ten months.
The two dead plants in the jar were also baby orchids (I was given them as a gift) but they didn’t survive the transplant :(
Update on my avocado plants.
Mango and Pistachio have been moved from water to dirt and are doing okay so far with the adjustment. Spinach is doing well, still growing. Clementine did not transplant well and is not enjoying the dirt.
I added a new level to my kinex build so Spinach, my avocado plant, can continue to grow.
Spinach, my avocado plant, is growing some new leaves after being transplanting into dirt over a month ago.
This is Henry! He is at least 10 years old and grew from the cutting of a plant that’s been in my family for over 30 years.
Despite looking great now he has only been growing healthily for the past 3 years, before that he never grew larger than the pot he was in because I did not know how to care for him (basically just water and sunlight, apparently - oops…)
Henry survived college with me. He’s a real trouper.
Here in the yellow and white pots are two more avocado plants, held up with Kinex. The tall leafy guy is named Spinach, he is probably close to a year old and he was recently transplanted to dirt. To the right of him, and smaller, is his sister Clementine.
Hi everyone! This is Mango and Pistachio, two little avocado plants. Mango is about 20ish inches tall (from roots to leaves) and is about 5 months old. Pistachio is about 14 inches tall and is about 3 months old.
