Mateo leaned against the wall, making himself a bit more comfortable now that he was out of sight of the rest of the family. “I’m glad you’re having a good time,” he said genuinely. “You’ll have to come back sometime. The family recently opened a pool house - it’s warm, even in the winter. I’m sure Lord Romano would welcome you and your dominant back.”

“A pool house? That sounds incredibly luxurious, and I’m certainly jealous I don’t have space for something like that at my house. I’d hate to intrude on his hospitality. To be fair, I’m not sure I’ll be in any condition for swimming for much longer.” She rubbed her stomach which was already showing more than was typical due to the twins.

Megan looked over with a soft smile before she placed her fork down, “I’m afraid you are going to be bitterly disappointed then.  The most exciting thing about my day was that it was Sunday and therefore I didn’t have to go into work.  Otherwise it’s a huge disappointment.”

“Really, nothing? Not even a ‘I read all of those books I’ve been planning on reading but always say I don’t have time for? No, I’ve made a list of every place to visit in the nearby countryside to create a more shocking story than my cousins have told me? If you could pick one wid thing to do in this upcoming year what would it be?”

Megan sat down at the table, placing her slice of chocolate cake down beside her and looked down at it with a sigh, memories of last year’s birthday still so fresh in her mind, days before it all went wrong.  “Another fabulous birthday,” she murmured to herself with a frown as she cut off a piece with her fork.

Diana leaned over and brushed her lips against Megan’s forehead before settling across from her. “I certainly hope it will be. I’m expecting to hear about all of your grand plans for the rest of the day.”

Cade put his arms around Diana.  “I love you Diana.  It does me good to see you so happy as well.”  The Dominant beamed at his friend.  “I’d be honored to be a godparent Diana.  Wow.  Thank you.”  He laughed.  “Give him a break.  He claimed a young thing who is just starting a successful career.  I think I scared poor Sampson when I mentioned Drew and I were thinking of starting a family soon after being claimed.”

Diana sighed in relief. “Oh good. You and Meg will be sharing a child, and then Spencer and Mia are sharing the other. With a family this big, I figured the children should bask in twice the love.” She was pulled into his laughter, shrugging slightly. “I suppose he is the only one of the three of us who claimed young so that makes a difference. But I still think we can start to subtly apply pressure and make him jealous.”

Megan’s cheeks flushed at the compliment.  She found it hard to think of herself as a role model for anyone right now but it was sweet that Diana was so sure.  “Of course I’m going to support you.  You and Vaughan are going to be amazing parents and I cannot wait to meet your gorgeous babies.  However right now I think I have waited long enough for cake.”

“Absolutely. One round of apple brown butter bars coming up. And you absolutely have to tell me what you think as I tweaked the recipe I found slightly.” It only took her a moment to place a few of the bars on a plate and bring it back over to Meg.

“I’m well,” she said, smiling lightly. She didn’t want to mar the evening with her own story. “I’m glad you didn’t miss it. It’s lovely to see you. Now tell me how you are really doing. Are you getting your house ready and everything?”

Diana had to laugh. “I am doing well! The house is basically ready, or as much as we can think to do at this time in between all of the other tasks. I think Vaughan is inches away from bribing Christine into minding me - which she does already so it wouldn’t make that much of a difference. But I will say the tired does sneak up on me more quickly than I’m used to.

“Kinda. Ain’t like we’re hiding something, it just leads to the private suites. We’re trying to keep all guests in the main hall and letting them use some of the guest areas,” Mateo explained. He shoved his hands in his pockets, deciding not to rush her to move. What would a few minutes hurt? “You enjoying the party so far?”

Mentally, she was gearing herself up to get back on her feet to give the family their privacy. But at his small talk style question, she found herself relaxing with a grateful grin. She would be fine in a moment, really. But it would help not to have that moment cut short. “Oh absolutely! This whole estate is gorgeous, and the glimpse I had of the grounds is making my mouth water. I haven’t had this much fun in ages.”

Liana’s eyes fell on a woman kneeling near a flower bed, and a smile grew on her face. She had been in that very same position countless times before and could relate. “Hello,” she said as she turned her body towards the woman. “Are you alright?”

The concerned voice nearly had her swearing again before letting out a sigh. It wasn’t the strangers fault she was slowly becoming a disaster. “I’m fine, I’m fine. Thank you for your concern. I’m just a little tired.”

Luan’s therapist had been encouraging her to be honest with herself and to embrace who she was and what she liked rather than being afraid and trying to hide all the time.  Having her hand held was one of the best ways for her to feel comforted and supported and though Diana wouldn’t have known that Luan offered her a grateful smile despite the sadness still hanging over her and gave the other woman’s hand a little squeeze with her own.  “Well ummm… m-maybe if she sits still long enough I could d-draw her but ahhh… that would mean not cuddling her any more s-so maybe I’ll save that for next time.”

“Isn’t that always the struggle? But I give you full permission to come over whenever you’d like either cat cuddles or a cat model, and I’m sure between the two of us we can bribe her into submission.” Before long, Diana was leading her into the house and opening the door to the other woman. “Here we are. Make yourself comfortable and I’ll grab the cookies.”

Mateo was going to object, but even from standing across the room, he could see the submissive’s bump and swollen feet. He shoved his hands in his pockets and nodded. “Yeah… yeah, of course. If you want, I can set you up a place out on one of the balconies. We got those heaters set up, so it ain’t cold. And I can find you something to prop your feet up on. Y’know… if you want.”

Diana smiled at his solicitation, even as she kept her eyes closed. “That’s sweet of you, thank you. I’ll be fine in a minute. But I’m guessing this is one of those corners that guests weren’t supposed to find.”

“That is very true and it hasn’t held him back at all,” Megan pointed out.  “I think you just need to spend time looking over as many name lists as you can find and make a big list of the ones that you like.  After all you can have middle names too so you have a few options for where to place them.” With a laugh she shook her head, “Probably best not to make me Megara’s godmother or people will think they are names after me.”

“And if they do? She clearly would have an excellent namesake as well as excellent godmother. But fine, fine, I will take that into consideration,” she said with a laugh. “But really. Thank you for everything, and all the lovely support and joy. It means a lot.”

Of all the family she’d gained, Diana remained her favorite. Her smile was equally as genuine as she moved to embrace the other woman quickly. “Diana! Tonight is definitely improved now. How are you?”

It was easy for her to be honest with her friend as she rubbed at the center of her back. “I’m doing well. A little tired, but there’s no way I would miss an event like this. How are you doing?”
