Sweet potato

A sweet potato I bought from the grocery store started to sprout slips. So I chucked it into a 20 gallon grow bag with soil and it soon grew long beautiful vines with heart shaped leaves. It never got to a point to flower and I had to pull it up since it's getting too cold to continue growing outside. The left is the original tuber. On the right are the tubers that grew from the feeder roots. There are varying sizes and I hope to use the smallest ones as starters for a new crop.

I'm very excited about this propagation. These are star jasmine cuttings that grow in my yard and one has finally sprouted roots. Today I'll be preparing some soil and putting it into a peat pot to keep it moist while it develops a more established root system. This will be an indoor plant!

This is a cutting from my Husky/Cherry hybrid. I hope it produces roots very soon so I can quickly pot it up. Tomatoes sprout root nodes so easily, I can't wait to get another since I only have one of these plants that I bought from the nursery.

my jalapeno plants are so prolific so far. I will try my best to overwinter them at the end of the year so I can keep them for at least another year. I plan to buy some nice grow lights so I can keep them in my utility room.

don't bury peat pots...

So i have around 8 or so sweet pepper plants growing in grow bags. I noticed that a few were much taller than the rest so I decided to cull some of the smaller ones so I didn't waste time or valuable bag space on them. When I pulled them out by the stem, I discovered something that I didn't like...

The damn peat starter pots I had first planted the seeds into hadn't degraded enough to let the roots flourish! They basically became rootbound within the little pots and only some of the roots were able to sprawl out from above and a little through the bottom that I can torn out.

This is definitely the reason why their growth suffered over the last two months. Also, I remember almost entirely peeling away the pots on a few, which would explain the taller more vibrant plants. Even though the pots were very helpful in starting seeds, I'll be sure to soak them through and peel them off before I transplant into larger containers from now on!

This is from my husky cherry hybrid. At the moment there are a load of green fruits and this was the very first one that appeared after I bought the plant.

Many Tomato

I started growing about 10 Roma tomato seedlings. I think they all made it to pot. Then I added two different tomato plants.

I bought some heavy duty metal shelves and propped them up on garden stones and large nursery pots I had in the garage. The tomatoes and peppers are lined up in the sunniest spot that isn't right in the middle of the yard.

I hope to buy more shelves later so I can arrange them in a more ideal orientation, preferably like a keyhole garden that I can easily step inside and water everything at once.

Garden Overview

I put everything in grow bags this year. I wanted to have more control over the soil and moisture level.

I'm currently using two bag sizes, one is a 5 gallon bag which takes about 1/3 of a 42 liter bag of soil to fill ⬇️

And a 20 gallon bag which takes 1 and 1/2 of a 54 liter bag of soil to fill. In the photo below there is one bag filled with only a single bag of garden soil which has the top folded down. Then another that's filled up to a few inches below the rim with a little less 1 & 1/2 bags. ⬇️

So far it's been very easy to set up and fill the bags. I can easily cover them with net or wire to keep critters from digging in there and I rearrange them as my garden grows larger or smaller. The biggest challenge will be recycling all the soil for next year.

I plan to purchase a large wheeled trash bin to store all the soil once I dump it out, sift through it, and let it dry before storing. Next year I'll have compost waiting to integrate into the old exhausted soil and bring it back to life.

Garden 2022

Last year I grew two Roma tomato plants and while I did neglect them some during the season, they did produce a lot of delicious little red tomatoes! This year I have gone all out.

This is the original raised bed built from wood that I had used last year. I've had this set up in the yard for a couple years now and It's held up. I decided to use it for sweet corn and sewed three furrows.

The row farthest away is closest to the house. As they grew, I noticed they struggled to keep up with the first two rows. I think it's because they get shaded by the house sooner as the afternoon wanes.

These are peppers I started in peat pots. The orange tags are sweet peppers, the seeds came from a couple peppers I bought from the store that I had dried. They came up slow but I've been patient with them as peppers are sleepy little guys and prefer hot and wet climate. The white tags are hot peppers. I didn't realize it was a mix pack because I suddenly forgot to read so I'll find out what kind of peppers they'll produce once the fruit comes in.
