…. Oh
He hadn’t… expected that. He hadn’t had time to prepare, and it hit him like a physical blow, with enough force to knock the air momentarily from his lungs.
… had he done something? Logically he knew the answer was probably no – they were all aware of Gladio’s moods – but he found himself wracking his brain for instances of wrong-doing, nevertheless.
Gladio thought he didn’t listen. Had he… forgotten something…?
His brow creased upward, eyes searching Gladio’s face for what he hoped might be some sort of answer, and when nothing stood out - when nothing became obvious enough to grasp - he frowned.
“… that’s a mean thing to say…”
His voice was quiet, and he was going for the kind of admonishment he thought Iggy would provide. Logical and stern. But… he just sounded kinda sad.
Finally, he lowered his eyes and his shoulders sagged. “… I’ll leave you alone.”
He turned and headed back toward the fire.
The air shifts entirely and Gladio knew immediately he had fucked up.
He wasn’t sure which part he noticed first: Prompto’s face, usually fully of light, falling off the face of the planet, or his entire body shrinking down on itself. Either way, Prompto was sad, and among the group, making the sunshine boy sad was taboo.
Gladio frowns, grabbing the other’s shoulder before he was out of arms’ reach.
“Hey hey hey, kid. Don’t do that.” He realizes he still sounds stern and forces himself to lower his voice.
“Prompt, don’t go all mopey on me. Shit, I didn’t mean it like that. I just...Jeez, I’m sorry, ‘kay?”
culinarystrategist:
“Ah, yes. The innuendo…” The innuendo Ignis isn’t aware of making. But in Gladio’s mind, he did and that’s all that counts under the circumstances. “I cannot promise that I will never do it again, but I shall be more careful about the words I use. Once again, I am sorry for embarrassing you.”
It’s true that Ignis doesn’t understand. His vocabulary is almost always innocent. Flirtation doesn’t come naturally to him and on the rare occasion he’s tried, he has to put real effort into it. Even then, it’s not necessarily successful and yet here is Gladio informing him that he’s somehow, and entirely inadvertently, managed it.
That’s when it hits Ignis. The reason for Gladio’s sudden mood. It’s concern, or worry, or possibly even fear that Ignis was attempting to take their friendship to another level. Little wonder Gladio is so disconcerted. Nobody expects their friends to suddenly start coming into them and create awkwardness.
“Upon reflection,” Ignis says, lifting a hand to push at his glasses. “I think I do understand the issue here and let me just reassure you that I do not wish to cause any tension between us. I fear there might have been a misunderstanding, but I accept that it is entirely my fault.”
The noodles are gone faster than planned. Gladio never stopped eating throughout all of Ignis’ apology. He regrets doing so, not having more to distract him for responding. But now it’s him, Ignis, and an empty foam cup.
“I don’t want you to think I’m gay or anythin’, cause I’m not, I’m just, really kinda freaked out that you’d do this, yanno? Accidental or not.” He shrugs, setting his cup down and stopping himself from getting his phone.
“Listen, I can put it behind us, no biggie. It just spooked me, yeah? Not everyday one of your friends hints at body juices or whatever the hell you said that made those peaches sound sexy.” Gladio laughs at the way it all sounds coming out of his mouth; the flustered mess he is.
“Just don’t put the entire blame on yourself, Iggy. Makes me feel bad. It was my fault too for thinking it was something implied. I’m sorry.”
bestchocobro:
Oh… he didn’t actually mean to make Gladio apologize. He wasn’t going for guilt. He knew how to make people feel guilty, but he hadn’t been trying that time. Oops.
“It’s okay,” he replied, offering a reassuring smile. “I get it.” Though he was a little unsure whether he should leave the big guy to it or not. He understood the desire to have a little alone time with your thoughts - boy did he understand - but…
“Did you… need to talk about it…?” he asked, taking a tiiiiny little step closer. “’Cause, yknow… I’m good at the whole ‘listening’ thing.”
Gladio had just assumed the blond would leave it at that and skip off to do whatever else he had planned, rather than stick around with his broody self. But he stayed put. It wasn’t like him. Gladio was sure Prompto knew better than to stick around when Gladio was having one of his moods. Maybe he was feeling brave.
“You, listening? You hardly listen to a thing I say when it matters most.” His spoiled mood was talking for him, coming off more hostile than he meant. “You’re hardly the type to sit down and listen to my problems, much less, anyone else’s other than your best bunk mate, prince fishsticks.”
culinarystrategist:
The reaction isn’t quite as Ignis expected it would be. Gladio continues to be subdued and that is extremely concerning. Pushing his way through the flaps completely, he enters the tend and sits himself down, crossing his legs and resting his hands on his knees.
“If you don’t tell me what’s wrong, I cannot fix it, Gladio.” The words are stern but the tone is soft. Inviting, Ignis hopes, because he genuinely does want to fix whatever has gone wrong between them.
“Talk to me, Gladio. Please.” Leaning forward, his elbows come to rest on his knees instead of his hands, Ignis sighs. “I don’t know what I’ve done, but I am sorry for whatever it is. And it would greatly help if you could tell me, so I don’t repeat it.”
The only real noise is the noodle slurping from Gladio, where his eyes are focused; he doesn’t notice Ignis take a seat right in front of him. He didn’t expect him to sit down at all. So he was going to be difficult...
“I already told you, specs,” He says, noodles dangling from his mouth. He doesn’t continue till he slurps them up the rest of the way. “If you ain’t gonna listen to me, ‘cause I’ve explained what happened, more than once, then you aren’t gonna get it.” It was an unsatisfactory response, even to Gladio, heaving a sigh and staring at the steam rise from the foam cup in his hands.
“It was...jus’ the bombardment of innuendos. I could’ve sworn you were doing it on purpose; just to rile me up, ya’know? Cause damn, I was riled up. It was embarrassing.” He eats more noodles, talking between bites, “That’s all it is.”
culinarystrategist:
Gadio says… Nothing. It’s worrying because he’s usually the kind of man who has a lot to say, whether or not anyone wants to hear it. While he may appear to be the big, strong, occasionally brooding, silent type, that’s only on the surface; Ignis knows better.
The fact that he immediately takes to the solace of the tent is even more concerning. The other two have gone off somewhere, and Ignis supposes that he ought to make a start on dinner, in preparation for when they return. He starts rummaging through their supplies, looking for some inspiration. Then his hand falls upon the ideal thing.
He’d promised Gladio, hadn’t he?
A few minutes later, he’s pushing aside the flaps of the tent and poking his head inside.
“I thought you might be feeling peckish after our excursion, so brought you some food.” Stretching out his arms, he holds out one freshly prepared Cup Noodle in one hand and a fork in the other.
Being left to his own thoughts was no help, but then again, his mind had really gone blank in his first few minutes in solitude. Gladio’s attention eventually fell on the rustling outside the tent, the clatter of metal and plastic. He was ready to accept whatever left overs Ignis had planned to cook instead of the promised noodles. But the oh so familiar scent hits his nose through the tent; barely there, but enough to get the shield perked up again. However, even with the promise of his favorite meal, and Ignis even going as far as delivering it to him, Gladio was still pouting. Above all else, when Ignis entered, Gladio didn’t look at him. He falls quickly into the temptation of food, and snatches both the cup and the fork away from the adviser before he protests. With a low huff, he utters out a soft “thanks,” but nothing else. Gladio was always a bad pouter.
bestchocobro:
He was getting the sense that maybe his presence wasn’t as appreciated as he’d first thought. He wasn’t always the most prudent of individuals, but it seemed like a pretty good idea to stop poking the man mountain.
He toed the ground with a degree or two more nervous uncertainty than he’d felt just a minute before, and nodded. “… okay. Well… if you need anything, I’ll be…” He gestured vaguely over toward the camp fire. “Y’know…”
A sigh escapes, and Gladio stiffens up. Upsetting Prompto was considered taboo between the other three. Bad luck for ten years, Noctis would always joke, but it kept them in line. The shield knew better than to be so harsh with him, stopping the blond by placing a hand on the other’s smaller shoulder.
“Listen, kid, I’m sorry. Jus’...not in a good mood, ya know? I didn’t mean to take it out on ya, just kinda stressed.” He admits, eyes falling to the ground a second later, “Don’t take it personal.”
culinarystrategist:
“I am sorry to make things hard, Gladio. Perhaps it is best for the both of us if I simply maintain my peace for now. At least until this peculiar mood has passed.”
And Ignis does keep quiet. He keeps glancing at Gladio and frowning softly as he attempts to sift through all that he’s said to try and work out what, exactly, has gone wrong with this outing. It started off so well…
Once or twice, Ignis opens his mouth to speak, but thinks better of it and presses his lips together instead.
Eventually, after working up some courage, Ignis asks in a very quiet tone, “Do you often find yourself growing irritated with me, Gladio?”
Once his foot hit the haven, Gladio’s shoulders slumped slightly. Sucking in a breath, he not-so-gently sets the peaches down on the fold out table, and huffs, slipping into the tent alone. A minute to himself shouldn’t seem so bad, he thinks at first, but Gladio’s thoughts ring loudly in the deafening silence. He can hear birds, and some slight rustling outside from Ignis, more than likely. But he heard no voices; the one in his head speaking loud and clear for him, driving Gladio mad. He thinks sitting down will help by putting some ease to his tossing stomach, but it hardly helps.
He thinks to himself, mostly about the strain he might of well just put on his and Ignis’ friendship just by making things awkward between them. Would it still be so easy to travel together if his mind fell straight into the gutter with every word from Ignis’ lips? He wasn’t so sure, blaming himself for thinking so....dirty.
Gladio just wanted reassurance that him and Ignis were to remain good friends, but the lack of courage kept him tightly seated in the mass of sleeping bags.
