Draw with me! [ from Carmen! ]
Ărjan gave a small frown to the other kid, seeming to think about this situation for a brief moment before responding. ââŠDo you have crayons?â he asked, gripping his own crayon box tightly. He had enough to share, but that didnât  mean he wanted to.
âHm?â Green eyes blinked up at him as she processed the question; immediately thereafter, her face lit up, and she slid the box of crayons toward him. âMhm! Do you wanna color?â
There was a feeling of relief as Ărjan realized he would not have to share his precious crayons; they had been a gift, after all. âI guess we can color,â he remarked, trying to act like he wasnât that excited.
Nice! Carmen smiled, delighted, as she reached into the box for a red crayon. âWhat do you like to draw?â She hummed, laying flat on her tummy as her feet swung idly back and forth in the air. âTrees? Birds? Monkies?â She gasped lightly, âI love Monkies.â

Pretend
From the top of the playgroundâs makeshift pirate ship, Carmen extended her plastic scimitar, adjusting the eyepatch over her left eye - it had been just a bit too big. âYouâll never take me alive!â From her lips came her attempt of a hearty pirate laugh; half of it was an imitation of her papaâs pretend âevil laughâ. With that, she dove down into the ship, toddling across the rope bridge to make her escape.
Arthur scratched his neck under the itchy dress coat he threw on. Today, his role wasnât that of a fierce pirate but of a naval officer; the sworn enemy of the scourge of the seas. âSurrender the Crown Jewels and we may reduce your sentence, foul pirate!!â He let out a frustrated groan at her cheeky response.
âNot on my watch!!â He chased after the girl fully in character, easily catching up to her and stopping in front of her, holding up his own pretend sword up against hers. âI challenge you to a duel. We shall see who is the better one. Hiyah!â Of course normally he would not have left himself open with such a predictable, dramatic attack but it was all for play.
Uh oh! Darn his long legs. It looked like he was catching up to her!
âA challenge for the jewels?â The plastic swords clunked together, and she widened her stance, a sly grin stretching across her features, the bridge of her freckled nose crinkling as she smiled. âYouâre on, mister Scurvy! I wonât go easy on you âcause youâre papaâs friend!â With that, she drew her arm back, lunging so that the sound of their pretend-swords thumping together rang into the air.Â

Oh shoot, she was caught!
âAh... ah-â
She looked around, hefting Diego up safely onto her back. She needed to make an escape-- Aha!
âSorry!â Carmen took a step back, and then ducked - and she ran. Right underneath Davidâs legs like he were some human archway. And she kept running. Not gonna get shipped back to the orphanage today.
âGood!â A resounding cheer, and she hefted him up a bit as she walked. Gosh - she wondered if he was eating enough.
Once she had managed through all the common folk, they came to a more secluded patch of land - at the seashore, down the path more toward the rocks. It didnât seem like he was too people-oriented; but at least here he could hear the music and still feel at ease.
Carmen came to a stop and carefully, slowly bent her knees. âIâm gonna putcha down, okay? Careful now- I got you!â As she lowered him, she held on with one hand to steady him, and then turned to face him when he was on the sand, holding both his little hands through his sweater sleeves. âYou wanna dance?â
With his feet safely planted upon the sand, he held onto the hand she offered him with both of his. The music was drifting into his ears. Excitable melodies partnered with the soothing sound of the ocean really did put him at ease.Â
Though, at her question, all he could do was give her a blank stare. She wanted to dance with him? He hadnât really danced before. There wasnât a lot of things he enjoyed to do, on his feet. He often fell.
ââŠâ All he could do was squeeze her hand.Â
"Here!" Carmen chimed - holding both his hands with hers, she stepped back a few inches to keep a dancing distance. Carefully, she held him upright. "You can do it! You just gotta-"
With an encouraging smile, she tugged him along into an almost salsa-like dance.
Oop! Was he awake? Carmen glanced over her shoulder with a smile.
âYes, niño?â She hummed, weaving past the groups of people dotted all around the beach. Maybe she could find a clearer spotâ maybe she could help him learn to dance! âDid you enjoy your nap?â
The crowd, usually, would have made him feel overwhelmed. It was how he was when he first arrived to the orphanage but oddly enough, despite it having only been a short time, around her, he felt at ease. A soft âmhmâ and an accompanying nod, he hoped, was enough indication as to how his nap went. He felt as light as a feather right now.Â
"Good!" A resounding cheer, and she hefted him up a bit as she walked. Gosh - she wondered if he was eating enough.

[sits next to her with a soft smile] what are you drawing, Carmen?
Oh! Hello, miss Josie! [ she looks up from her drawing, and smiles warmly at the lady. ] Iâm drawing a family! [ except the family seems strikingly similar to Some People that she knows. ] Do you want to draw with me?
Oh, well how could Josephine refuse?
âI would love to,â she chirped, as she raised an eyebrow at the drawing. Carmen certainly was good, compared to what Josephine was going to attempt, and as she graced over the drawing once more, her heart swelled with warmth.
âHave you named the family yet?â Josephine asked, out of curiosity.
Carmen passed the woman a blank sheet of paper, and some nice purple crayons. âUmm..!â She tapped her chin. âWell, itâs mister Toni and his new husband! Theyâre very happy.â Her legs rocked back and forth as she spoke; she was laying on her tummy, drawing on the ground. âThis is their big, smelly cat.â
Josephine chuckled, âdo you not like the cat?â While she asked the question, Josephine copied the young girls position, so that she was comfortable. She picked up one of the crayons that she had been passed, gently starting to form lines on the page.
She mostly kept her gaze on the illustration Carmen was drawing, a warm fuzzy feeling in her chest. It brought back memories, certainly, but good ones. Josephine then added, âdo you like mister Toni and his husband?â
Carmen began to draw happy flowers around the two, and smiled, nodding her head quickly. "Mhm! They're both very nice. Mister Toni likes to sing and dance and play guitar with me! And, mister Lovi makes nummy strawberry cake. They're both very nice!" Ah.. if only she were so lucky..
âMhm!â She nodded in affirmation; the feeling of him nestled into her was ⊠well, she couldnât place it. She felt very ⊠sisterly! She had always wanted a sibling.
.. Oh .. was he napping? Aw. The poor baby must have been tired. A soft smile stretched over her features. Heâd probably stir when the sound of music fell onto his ears. In the mean time - off they strolled, down the dirt road, on to the festival!
This seemed to happen all the time. No matter how hard Diego would fight to keep his eyes open, whenever he was lifted and rested against someone, heâd fall asleep in almost an instant.
And, asleep he stayed, through the whole journey. If she had sped up, or perhaps skipped, he wouldnât have picked up on it at all. He was far too comfortable upon her back, and the warmth he felt - and this sense of peace.
It wasnât until the sound of light strumming, and the sound of laughter, had met his ears that he, reluctantly, woke up. His eyes were a blur, but he didnât mind and simply nestled closer. â..Ca- ..Carmââ A yawn.
Oop! Was he awake? Carmen glanced over her shoulder with a smile.
"Yes, niño?" She hummed, weaving past the groups of people dotted all around the beach. Maybe she could find a clearer spot-- maybe she could help him learn to dance! "Did you enjoy your nap?"
âOoh! Diego, diego! I like that!â Carmen chimed in a sing-song voice as she began to toddle toward the back exit; she glanced around. No one seemed to be lookingâŠ
She held onto him tight with one hand, using the other to push the door open; it was a careful trot across the grass, around the cornerâ âIâm Carmen! Nice to meet you, Diego! Looks like ya can talk after all, but just a little.â She hummed. âThatâs okay!â
He looked over his shoulder as she carried him alongâgoodbye orphanageâthen hid his face against his sleeves once more, simply listening to her speak. It didnât take that long until his eyes started to become heavy though, and much of what she was saying made little sense within his mind. âCar..-â He yawned, rubbing his eye. âCarmen.â
âMhm!â She nodded in affirmation; the feeling of him nestled into her was ... well, she couldnât place it. She felt very ... sisterly! She had always wanted a sibling.
.. Oh .. was he napping? Aw. The poor baby must have been tired. A soft smile stretched over her features. Heâd probably stir when the sound of music fell onto his ears. In the mean time - off they strolled, down the dirt road, on to the festival!
The moment she could feel the weight of his body, her expression lit upâ he was really coming with her! Now she wouldnât be in trouble for sneaking off alone.
âGreat!â She straightened, slipping her hands under his legs and hefting him up onto her back. In her overalls front pocket, she carried some noisemakers, whistles, and other clackers for the festival. This was going to be fun! âLetâs get going, ah.. Oh. Whatâs your name, again?â
He blinked; eyes wandered from side to side - he felt tall! He may have extended his arms to his sides if it didnât mean heâd fall.Â
But oh. Now she wanted to know his name! Oddly enough, despite how cautious he had been, there was a bit of excitement stirring deep within him. Someoneânot an adultâwanted to know about him..! Though still, new people were.. difficult to speak with.
..Except.. for her. âD-Di..â A gulp, and he hid his face against his arm. âDiego.â
âOoh! Diego, diego! I like that!â Carmen chimed in a sing-song voice as she began to toddle toward the back exit; she glanced around. No one seemed to be looking...

Carmen waited patiently. Her fingers did not cease the wiggling; she really wanted him to come along! Not only because she needed a buddy; but because she wanted him to come and have fun, too!
âAny time.â She hummed, bouncing on her feet.Â
âŠHe supposed it wouldnât hurt.
One, two and threeâ he hefted himself off the seat and onto her back he went. He hoped he didnât hurt her with how unsteady his movements were. Never had he been carried on someoneâs back before.Â
Without further ado, his arms encircled around her neck but not to the extent of strangling her; he held onto his other wrist as he attempted to hold on tight.
Please donât drop meâ
The moment she could feel the weight of his body, her expression lit up-- he was really coming with her! Now she wouldnât be in trouble for sneaking off alone.

A blink. Her eyes flickered from his gaze, to his little legs. He really couldnât walk.
âOh!â She paused for a couple of seconds. The silence fell, before her face suddenly beamed with the light of a new, brilliant idea. âI know!â
Suddenly, she turned around, so that he would be facing her back. Her hands reached behind her, her tiny fingers wiggling in expectation. âHere!â She bent her knees slightly. âI can take ya!â
âŠ!
Diego sat there, eyes wide for but a brief moment before a tentative look returned within them. She was so- He hadnât met someone so-
..So eager to take him along.
Inching just a bit from the seat, he lowered the hand that he had up to his face, only to have both palms gripping at the edge of his seat. To hop onto her back, or to keep sitting here, hoping he could be be there with everyone else? He wasnât..â He wanted to but-
Carmen waited patiently. Her fingers did not cease the wiggling; she really wanted him to come along! Not only because she needed a buddy; but because she wanted him to come and have fun, too!
âAny time.â She hummed, bouncing on her feet.Â
..Oh. He didnât want to?
Carmenâs face fell slightly. Was something wrong? âCan you talk?â She tilted her head, moving a step closer to examine him; her hand extended to push his wild bangs away from his eyes; oh! They were beautiful! âThatâs okay if you canât! See, I just need someone âta come with me, so I wonât be in trouble for goinâ to the music festival alone. Do you wanna come?â Hmm. She glanced him up and down. âOr.. canâtcha walk?â
Heâd been taken aback just a bit by her movements but he didnât try to push her away. Instead, he glanced from her, down to his now still legs and mismatched socks then shook his head âno.â Though as to what he had just answered may have been difficult to know.
âI-â The tiniest voice left him, somewhat muffled by his sleeve that he kept close. It was something that kept him safe. â-canât-â There was a gentle wiggle of his legs, â-properlyâŠâ
A blink. Her eyes flickered from his gaze, to his little legs. He really couldnât walk.

Ahh, she really wanted to goâ she wanted to go to the music festival! But she wasnât supposed to go without a partner.. Man! The workers were so busy today - even Mathias was held up! All the other kids were too chicken to follow her down to the beach. If only âŠ
âŠ!
That boy looked lonely! And- oh, had he been watching? Perfect, perfect. Once they had locked eyes, she smiled wide - and she tranced over.
âHola!â Came the excitement in her voice - she held her hands behind her back, rolling on her heels. âYou look a bit lonely, niño. Do you want to come with me on a walk?â
Oh. Oh no!Â
Diego hadnât meant to appear as if he were staring. A quick glance to the side, and he did his best to appear to have only gazed her way on accident. He wasnât.. entirely sure how to interact with all the children yet, even if Tuli said they were all kind. His mind was always elsewhere. But at her words, he found it difficult to not give her his attention.
Opening his mouth, for a moment it appeared as if he were about to speak, but instead, he bit onto his sweaterâs sleeve again and shook his head. Walking was a bit.. difficult.
..Oh. He didnât want to?
