He was trying. He really, really was! Walking was already difficult as it was, and now the embarrassment of toppling over on the pavement? Diego wanted to curl up and cry. And, actually, he wasn’t too far from it when he had realized that something was dripping down his knee. Was that– “Ah-”

Oh shit! An alarmed look on his face, Gilbert’s almost forgotten weakness for children- combined with his newly acquired teacher instincts- had Gil moving along over to the kid as fast as possible. Carefully,he came to stand in front of the kid, and slowly lowered himself into an attempt at a crouch. Ow; it was uncomfortable but he’d deal for now.

“What happened, kid?”

Ow, ow, ow … With honey eyes glassed over by unshed tears, Diego whimpered, bottom lip protruding slightly as he sat back on his bottom, tugging the hem of his long sweater up above his red-streaked knee. Maybe he wasn’t ever going to walk … “Ah- mm,” Fear rushed over him as he struggled to find any words; never was he much of a talker, but especially now– he couldn’t.

“Not talking?” He asked, his voice unconsciously softening as he assessed the damage. “That’s okay- I’ve been told I don’t shut up, so I guess I could talk for us both.”

Now, a scraped knee. Considering he taught P.E now, Gilbert had seen it prudent to carry some basic first aid stuff in his pocket at all times, so he didn’t have to hobble all the way to the school building to find something. It should be enough to treat a scraped knee. He abandoned his crutch at his side, freeing his hands to actually be useful.

“Okay, this might hurt a little.” He warned.

Hurt? Diego’s eyes widened in horror, but he made no move to scoot away; besides, what good would running do if his legs weren’t all that strong anyway?

Something about the look of this man, his snow-white hair and abnormally maroon colored eyes, the volume of his voice - something made the boy’s bottom lip protrude. He whimpered softly, covering his eyes with the long sleeves of his oversized sweater.

[kneels down] Hello are you Diego? [he's here for medical business dont mind him]

[ he’s seated on a chair; both his legs and swinging and fro but his eyes are gazing downward] [ he isn’t all too good with eye contact ] … [ or speaking to adults that he isn’t all too familiar with. ]

[this boy sure is quiet but regardless he should keep talking] So is this the first time you’ve talked to a doctor? I remember my first doctor visit. My mother said I couldn’t stop crying because I was scared. [laughs awkwardly]

[ .. ] [ is that supposed to make him feel better? ] [ nods his head to indicate that, yes, this is the first time he’s “spoken” to a doctor before. ] [ kind of just, wiggles his legs ]

“Good!” A resounding cheer, and she hefted him up a bit as she walked. Gosh - she wondered if he was eating enough.

Once she had managed through all the common folk, they came to a more secluded patch of land - at the seashore, down the path more toward the rocks. It didn’t seem like he was too people-oriented; but at least here he could hear the music and still feel at ease.

Carmen came to a stop and carefully, slowly bent her knees. “I’m gonna putcha down, okay? Careful now- I got you!” As she lowered him, she held on with one hand to steady him, and then turned to face him when he was on the sand, holding both his little hands through his sweater sleeves. “You wanna dance?”

With his feet safely planted upon the sand, he held onto the hand she offered him with both of his. The music was drifting into his ears. Excitable melodies partnered with the soothing sound of the ocean really did put him at ease. 

Though, at her question, all he could do was give her a blank stare. She wanted to dance with him? He hadn’t really danced before. There wasn’t a lot of things he enjoyed to do, on his feet. He often fell.

“...” All he could do was squeeze her hand.

Oop! Was he awake? Carmen glanced over her shoulder with a smile.

“Yes, niño?” She hummed, weaving past the groups of people dotted all around the beach. Maybe she could find a clearer spot– maybe she could help him learn to dance! “Did you enjoy your nap?”

The crowd, usually, would have made him feel overwhelmed. It was how he was when he first arrived to the orphanage but oddly enough, despite it having only been a short time, around her, he felt at ease. A soft ‘mhm’ and an accompanying nod, he hoped, was enough indication as to how his nap went. He felt as light as a feather right now.

[ peeks out from the window of the orphanage; his sister is apparently busy being checked up by the doctor, so now he has to wait. ] [ !!!! ] Dog..–

Uncomfortable? Oh, okay. Bjorn frowned slightly, but tugged carefully on the dogs leashes until they were back at a safer distance. A pause.

“Want me to take them out?”

Did she want her to-- No, no! Diego shook his head, right arm lowering from his mouth, only to inch forward and off the seat. However, from there, he didn’t move. Instead, he simply fell onto his bottom, watching the dogs from afar. He wanted to.. pat them, but-

Weak and cautiously, he held his left hand out. This was what Carmen would do.. right? Except, she’d not have both her eyes shut like he did.

Bjorn smiled down at the dogs. Sad as they had been to see their sibling go, Bjorn was happy that she could do something for Tuli. It warmed her heart to see her so-oh, a child. She’d seen him before, she thought- when she came to collect Tuli from the orphanage.

So, she stopped. Allowed the dogs to wander up to him, and attempted to be as nonthreatening as possible.

Diego squeezed onto the edge of his seat as he pulled his legs up, holding it close to his chest. He had seen dogs before, and was quite fond of them - from afar. Up close and personal? Maybe not when he was alone.

It’s going to be okay [gives him a reassuring smile] It’ll be fast. You can play with your friends as soon as we finish. Is that okay?

[ looks up to meet his gaze but quickly looks back down ] [ swing swing, he swings his leggies ] [ instead of speaking, he simply nods to indicate “okay” ]

Hello there. [really quietly, he seems scared] [kneels down] Are you lost...?

[ where did carmen go!? he was sure she was here, he was sure-- she wouldn’t just leave him, right? she.. she wouldn’t just- ] [ !!!! ] [ looks up at the woman, falling onto his bottom and inching backwards a bit] [ carmen.. where are you? i-i’m s.. scared..! ]

“Mhm!” She nodded in affirmation; the feeling of him nestled into her was … well, she couldn’t place it. She felt very … sisterly! She had always wanted a sibling.

.. Oh .. was he napping? Aw. The poor baby must have been tired. A soft smile stretched over her features. He’d probably stir when the sound of music fell onto his ears. In the mean time - off they strolled, down the dirt road, on to the festival!

This seemed to happen all the time. No matter how hard Diego would fight to keep his eyes open, whenever he was lifted and rested against someone, he’d fall asleep in almost an instant.

And, asleep he stayed, through the whole journey. If she had sped up, or perhaps skipped, he wouldn’t have picked up on it at all. He was far too comfortable upon her back, and the warmth he felt - and this sense of peace.

It wasn’t until the sound of light strumming, and the sound of laughter, had met his ears that he, reluctantly, woke up. His eyes were a blur, but he didn’t mind and simply nestled closer. “..Ca- ..Carm--” A yawn.

“Ooh! Diego, diego! I like that!” Carmen chimed in a sing-song voice as she began to toddle toward the back exit; she glanced around. No one seemed to be looking…

She held onto him tight with one hand, using the other to push the door open; it was a careful trot across the grass, around the corner– “I’m Carmen! Nice to meet you, Diego! Looks like ya can talk after all, but just a little.” She hummed. “That’s okay!”

He looked over his shoulder as she carried him along--goodbye orphanage--then hid his face against his sleeves once more, simply listening to her speak. It didn’t take that long until his eyes started to become heavy though, and much of what she was saying made little sense within his mind. “Car..-” He yawned, rubbing his eye. “Carmen.”

The moment she could feel the weight of his body, her expression lit up– he was really coming with her! Now she wouldn’t be in trouble for sneaking off alone.

“Great!” She straightened, slipping her hands under his legs and hefting him up onto her back. In her overalls front pocket, she carried some noisemakers, whistles, and other clackers for the festival. This was going to be fun! “Let’s get going, ah.. Oh. What’s your name, again?”

He blinked; eyes wandered from side to side - he felt tall! He may have extended his arms to his sides if it didn’t mean he’d fall. 

But oh. Now she wanted to know his name! Oddly enough, despite how cautious he had been, there was a bit of excitement stirring deep within him. Someone--not an adult--wanted to know about him..! Though still, new people were.. difficult to speak with.

..Except.. for her. “D-Di..” A gulp, and he hid his face against his arm. “Diego.”

Carmen waited patiently. Her fingers did not cease the wiggling; she really wanted him to come along! Not only because she needed a buddy; but because she wanted him to come and have fun, too!

“Any time.” She hummed, bouncing on her feet.

...He supposed it wouldn’t hurt.

One, two and three-- he hefted himself off the seat and onto her back he went. He hoped he didn’t hurt her with how unsteady his movements were. Never had he been carried on someone’s back before. 

Without further ado, his arms encircled around her neck but not to the extent of strangling her; he held onto his other wrist as he attempted to hold on tight.
