harriet.

there she was again. harriet was running into gastonette so much lately, it was as though they were back on the isle. but they certainly weren’t, and here, things were different. in fact, harriet had just been going to visit aurora when they spotted ettie, and they couldn’t let her know that. harriet had with them a bottle of black pearl rum to celebrate aurora’s engagement, but it looked like they would have to do so another time. ‘care fer a drink?’ they asked ettie casually as they approached./ft. @gastonettelegume​

for the most part, gastonette hated auradon so far.  it was too clean, too pretty, the people were too fake nice.  she didn’t see the appeal.  not unlike her time on the isle, gastonette just spent her time here getting drinks and starting fights.  she was on her way to do that now when she spotted harriet, one of the few people she didn’t hate here. 

“ always. ”  she smirked.  “tell me you have something stronger and better than what they had at the gala. ”

“    what?     no,    harry’s   been  here  for,   like,   ages  and  then  uma  came  back  from,   i  don’t  know?    exploring.    i  went  travelling?    didn’t  i  say  goodbye?   ”    he's  really  confused  cause  he  could  have  swore  he  said  ‘later’   to  his  family,    maybe  he  didn’t  he  thinks  as  he  shovels  another  little  pastry  into  his  mouth.    it’s  when  he  glances  back  at  his  older  sister  and  notices  her  formal  wear,    and  the  fact  that  they’re  in  a  ballroom  of  all  places  that  it  clicks  in  his  mind  what  she  meant.    “    oh,    when  you  said  here  you  meant  here-here,    as  in  the  gala  here.    nah,    i’m  alone  cause  harry  is  with  ben’s  sister,   aurora?    and  uma  had  a  date  i  think?    wait,    do  you  have  a  date?    are  little  brothers  allowed  to  do  the  ‘if  you  touch  her  i’ll  kill  you  spiel’  cause  i  don’t  know  if  i  have  that  in  me,    to  be  honest  with  you.   ”

it takes everything in her not to roll her eyes as he figures this out.  instead, she closes her eyes.  she’d remembered that overly cavalier ‘later’ he’d passed off to the family as he left.  both herself and their mother knew it had been a more serious goodbye than he’d played it off to be.  it had always been hard to keep track of him, but gastonette made it her duty long ago to look after him, specifically.  her other siblings certainly didn’t need her help. 

when he finally pieces it together, she sighs and opens her eyes.  now, she finally takes in what he’s wearing.  was he really wearing a hawaiian shirt?

“ why are you wearing that? ”  she wants to ask more questions, but quickly brushes it off.  she knows better.  she’s not going to get the answer she wants, not from gil.  “ never mind.  no, i don’t have a date.  i don’t date. ”  she lies, hoping he doesn’t see her briefly looking over at harriet. “ who’s uma on a date with? ”

harriet.

harriet chuckled in return, glad to see that the chemistry between them and gastonette was still there. one thing they had always had in common was a love of weapons, and harriet couldn’t help but notice the finely-crafted knife ettie had thrown into the wall. ‘that one new?’ they asked casually. 

the place isn’t the same without you.now harriet knows for a fact that they’re at least a little red. ‘yeah, well, it was ne’er really th’ isle i’ the lost, ‘cause we all knew exactly where we stood wit’ th’ royals. really, it was just th’ isle o’ those in desperate need o’ a shower.” 

she couldn’t help but notice them getting a little red and she smirked only to shift her eyes away from theirs.  it felt so stupid how her heart could race around them in even the most mundane of conversations.  one second around them and she felt like she was a silly, nervous teenager again. 

she shifted away from the wall a bit and cocked a hip.  the mention of the royals made her perk up.  “ seems like you all are getting pretty chummy with the royals nowadays. ”  she took a step toward them.  “ and hey! we shower. ”

baby beastette.

it’s her own fault for not looking where she’s going,   she’ll tell herself later,   but events like these always make her so excited and full of glee.   she’s laughing,   genuine happiness on her face as she turns,   and it’s only when she collides with somebody that she freezes and looks ahead.   she doesn’t recognise the person in front of her,   doesn’t think anything of it,   but that doesn’t mean that tears don’t stem in her eyes as soon as she realises what’s happened.   her dress  —  oh,   she definitely shouldn’t be panicking this much about a dress,   but she is!   was she going to wear it again?   most likely not,   but what is she going to do now?    ‘    i…    ’    she stares down at the stain before she near dives to grab a towel off a nearby waiter’s arm,   trying not to let her tears spill to ensure that it doesn’t ruin her makeup  —  and because she hates letting people see her cry.    ‘    it’s okay,   ’    she manages to breathe,   but it almost sounds like she’s reassuring herself.    she’s dabbing at the moisture on her torso with haste.    maybe if she’s lucky it’ll look like it was intended to be a little darker?    please,  please,  please…

she’s laughing.  it’s horrible, but she’s laughing in the face of the girl who is nearly in tears.  she can’t help it.  it’s such a pathetic princess thing to apologize for something like this and for it to be the daughter of the beast is just the icing on top of the cake.  it’s nothing major to her.  she definitely has something bigger planned up her sleeve (and maybe a knife at her ankle), but to watch this baby beast crumble at the sight of spilled champagne is the best thing she’s seen at this event yet. 

“unbelievable,”  she snickers.

harriet.

‘dinnae think they’ll have much o’ a selection here. mostly champagne, but’ they shrug playfully, ‘what’s wrong with that?’ they offer gastonette their arm, and then whisk her off to the bar. after ordering two flutes of the best champagne in the castle, they offer a toast. ‘tae…old friends?’ hopefully that didn’t sound too corny, harriet hopes as they take a sip of their drink. ‘ye…ye look fantastic.’ now that definitely sounded corny, but they temper it with a little teasing. ‘did yer da’ insist again upon ye wearing a big, poofy gown?’ 

as they speak, she clutches the flask in her pocket.  it’s definitely stronger than anything that they’ll have here, but she’s not sure she wants to reveal it yet.  she’s trying to take it all in, figure out what’s going on here and okay, maybe she’s a little distracted by how good harriet looks.  when they return with the flutes of champagne, she happily raises a glass with the other.  is it pathetic that this is the happiest she’s felt in a long time?

“ yeah, to old friends. ”  she clinks the other’s glass and takes a swig.  “ considering i ripped the last one to shreds, i don’t think he’ll be bringing that up for a long time. ”  she chuckles and tries to hide the flush in her cheeks with her glass.  “ you don’t look so bad yourself. ”

she’s bored and angry.  she’d like to say this is a new state for her, but it’s really her default.  she’d had a brief moment of content when she’d started the night with harriet, but after getting separated in this giant place, gastonette finds herself alone and sipping more of her flask than she should be.  out of the corner of her shaky vision, she spots the figure of a blonde she recognizes all too well and the general anger in her turns to rage. 

goddamn de bourbons.  she takes another sip from her flask, grabs a champagne off a prince and bumps into the blonde, spilling the drink all over her beautiful red dress.

gil is maybe the one person in the world gastonette is truly soft with.  maybe it’s the fact that he’s younger and she practical raised him.  maybe it’s that unlike her oldest brother and her father, he’s soft, he’s loyal and if she’s being honest maybe the best of the legumes.  

she runs to him, gives him a quick hug and immediately pulls away.  she may be soft with him, but she’s still a legume and they don’t do mushy well.  

“ hey, i’m so glad you’re here.  did you come alone or with your crew? ”

so far the event is way too boring for her liking.  sure, she ran into harriet earlier and the very visage of them stopped her heart for a moment, but where is the yelling, the violence, the looting?  this place is filled to the brim with goods and ak idiots and yet all the vks seem to be standing around like they’re one of them.  it almost confirms her theory that the de bourbons have the vks under some sort of spell.  

to make things a little more interesting she grabs a small candle holder left unattended it tucks it in her pocket.  then she pulls out her flask and takes a swig when she spots harry. 

“ hey harry.  long time no see.  want somethin’ a little stronger? ”  she offers the flask to him.

Gabri... no, damn it, that's not the... Garriette! No, darn it -- wait, what? You're telling me her name is Gastonette? Gastonette? Oh, the poor gi-GASTONETTE! GASTONETTE OVER HERE! How does it feel to be virtually unknown in Auradon? What's it like being called Gastonette? Do you hate your dad for calling you such a dumb name? GASTONETTE!

she’s all eyebrows and glares as they continue to misname her.  she’s kind of hoping they get it wrong she doesn’t have to speak to them.  when they do, she continues to glare.  “ idiot. ”  she mutters.  “ apparently, i’m not completely unknown if you finally figured it out.  i’ll make myself known when to.  now, piss off.  a ‘dumb’ name isn’t as bad as actually being an idiot like you. ”

harriet.

harriet j. hook is wearing deep red lipstick, which is the first indication that this is going to be an odd night. never one for makeup, unlike their eyeliner-obsessed brother and father, they are definitely not wearing lipstick, or a very chic all-black suit, in order to impress anybody. nope. nobody at all. but by no coincidence whatever, as harriet makes their way toward the bar, they spot gastonette, also in a suit, looking more divine than ever before. clearing their throat, they stride over to ettie and ask, as smoothly as they can muster, ‘care fer a drink?’/ @gastonettelegume​

to say gastonette is uncomfortable at such an event is a vast understatement.  she’s arrived in a black suit after swearing off dresses nearly a decade ago.  she’d thought about trying a dress in order to fit in with these pathetic aks, but even the thought made her shudder.  she can almost still feel the utter embarrassment when her dad tried to put her in a big fluffy yellow one when she was a kid.  she’d promptly ripped it to shreds with her first knife never to be seen again.  so tonight she settles on the suit and red lipstick to pretend like she’s trying.  it’s trying for her.   

all she has to do tonight is observe, find time to get close to the de bourbons and catch up with harriet.  she’ll probably end up far more consumed with the latter than she likes, but it’s harriet.  she can’t help it.  her eyes scan the room for her favorite pirate, half looking around for their usual tastefully grungy clothes, only to be stopped dead by their own suit and red lips. 

“ more than you’ll know. ”  she bites her lip to try to stop the smirk forming in the corner of them.

gastonette had spent her first few days in auradon taking it easy and hanging out with her old friend harriet.  she’d almost forgotten about her true goal.  unlike a lot of the other vks here, gastonette wasn’t prepared to let go of her parents’ resentments.  the de bourbons were the reason all the vks grew up the way they did.  how could anyone forget that?

so when she finally saw one in the flesh, she couldn’t help herself.  she walked past right past aurora and roughly bumped into her.  “ hey watch it, baby beast! ”

‘heh, yeah’ harriet nodded. ‘it’s pretty small.’ wow, harriet. a very astute observation. but they couldn’t help it! something about gastonette made their brain turn to mush. it had been that way since they were kids, when they frequently lost their play-sparring matches just by getting lost in ettie’s eyes. 

‘though ah guess it ain’t as crowded as it was before,’ they quickly added, trying to sound casual. ‘how is th’ old place, anyhow? haven’t been there in a bit, meself.’ 

gastonette chuckled, grabbed her knife from the wall and tucked it in her ankle holster.  apparently it was frowned upon here to be so openly armed and willing to use weapons even when nothing was happening.  she didn’t know what they’d expected when they opened the barrier from the isle.  they’re were still VKs, still rotten to the core. 

she leaned again the wall with arms crossed as she faced harriet.  “ definitely not.  the place isn’t the same without you. ”  she bows her head and tucks a hair behind her ear.  the last statement fell from her lips too genuine for her liking.  “ it’s almost too clean now.  too safe.  i don’t even know if you can call it the isle of the lost anymore. ”

harriet had heard from others that their old friend (and crush) gastonette legume was in auradon. what they didn’t know, however, was that they would be seeing her again so soon. 

they flinched a bit at the sight of the flying knife, but a familiar voice made them full-on jump. ‘ettie! i mean, gastonette.’

they laughed, hoping it would hide their otherwise obvious nerves. ‘what the hell are you doing here?’ they asked with a smile. 

there was a rare genuine smile that graced her lips that she tried to hide by biting them.  there was something about the young captain that always brought down her tough exterior.  she’d like to blame it on them having been friends by default due to their brothers’ friendship, but somewhere deep down she knew it was more than that. 

every time she saw harriet she remembered their playful sparring and coming to the other if gil had sat on her knife and bent it.  harriet had always been the one person gastonette could go to to vent, to talk about dreams outside of her family.  they were the only one who truly knew her. 

“ thanks for the warm welcome, cap.  guess the isle was getting too small for me, you know? ”

how do you feel about the de bourbons?

“ i’m not buying into their bull.  they want to pretend they’re good?  fine, but they’re not and i don’t know if this town is just under some sort of spell and forgot that the former king used to be a beast, but i’m not falling for them like everyone else. ”  they’re going to pay for what they did to my family.  she doesn’t say it aloud, plausible deniability and all.

with the barrier down, gastonette had finally made her way to auradon.  it had taken a lot of convincing her parents to do so, but she insisted she’d look after gil.  besides, it made the legumes one step closer to the de bourbons and she was determined to find out what the hell was going on here.  

along the way she decided to pay an old friend a visit, ( maybe her only friend ).  she playfully tossed a knife at the wall near them, watching it stick with a boing! she wasn’t aiming it at anyone, just getting their attention.
