I just can’t get over the fact there used to be an Ambidextral Culture Society. In the 1900s at that. Apparently founded by a grammar school teacher?! Qualifications aside, can you imagine the stress of having your parents being part of that?

Parent to four-year-old: It’s time to learn to write.

Four-year-old: Okay, yeah. I can do that. I’ll just use my right hand.

Parent: No.

Four-year-old: Huh?

Parent (exasperated): Two hands, kid, two hands. You’re going to be ambidextrous! Your siblings are going to be ambidextrous, your friends, your future children! It’s a new age!

Four-year-old: ...what if I become dyslexic...

Parent: Dyxlexa-what?! No, you’re going to become a more perfect person! Just trust me.

Four-year-old: Where did you get this idea?

Parent: ummm, the newspaper...

Four-year-old, suspicious: Who wrote the article?

Parent:...

Four-year-old: WHO WROTE IT!!!

Parent: A grammar school teacher, okay! But I swear it's legit.

New Rik Smits Fan

Apparently there is also a basketball player named Rik Smits. But this isn’t about him. It’s about a Dutch author of the same name. 

Reading through books on left-handedness for my school project can get kind of boring, but sentences like these from Rik Smits make everything worth it:

“He [Lord Baden-Powell] claimed he could keep on top of his office work only by regularly switching his writing hand and he regretted that as a child he had not practice writing about two different subjects at one. If for that reason alone, he cannot have been much of an intellectual. Even English lords have only one head...”

I almost laughed out loud in class and broke my quiet girl persona. 

I still chuckle everytime I read that sentence.
