Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats

it’s looking more and more like only gems that were made for combat have weapons given lapis/ bismuth/ sapphire/ peridot don’t seem to have an actual weapon for fighting… but where does that leave pearl? is her will to stab people so strong she just managed to manifest her very own stabber or what
i really like the idea that it’s supposed to be a fancy non-functional ceremonial scepter that she turned into a weapon mainly with determined trial and error and physics/engineering skillz, THAT SAID ‘u ever get so mad you manifest a magical weapon you were never intended to wield’ would be the best pearl backstory we could possibly ask for
“Pearl what are you doing? That’s a letter opener.”
“Not anymore.”
TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.
via ift.tt
Yep. It also correlates extremely strongly with an increasing decrease of violent crime. One of the symptoms of low level constant lead exposure is increased aggression and volatility.
“Unknown scientist”? That was Clair Cameron Patterson.
Gas companies are still so mad at him he’s “unknown scientist”, know his name
Daily reminder that health and safety standards like these are what politicians mean when they talk about “deregulation.”
Patterson died 5 December 1995.
Petition to make his date of death a Tumblr holiday celebrated by talking about cool shit the gas and petroleum industries don’t want us to know about, and fighting to continue his work.
Happy Clair Cameron Patterson day!
Oh, hey, it’s almost Clair Cameron Patterson day!

BLOODY WOMEN IN HORROR
"It’s an image we have seen over and over again; a woman, head to toe saturated in blood, the whites of her eyes piercing through the red – she is transformed. When a film turns up the blood dial and soaks their female characters head to toe this allows them to be figuratively reborn from the original naïve and innocent female characters into their new role as hardened bad-ass." thinking about alisaie and g'raha is like. where to even BEGIN
they are both Very Passionate and with an impulsive streak
they both harbor an ambivalent relationship to sharlayan & its beliefs and customs. alisaie spent her childhood in the shadow of her brother (who was as close to the sharlayan ideal as it gets) and is desperate to prove herself, we know she felt stifled by the conventions of academic politeness and politics and has terrible handwriting, for instance, but she's a peerless scholar in her own terms (focusing more on practical applications: first combat applications of aether for her studium thesis, then red magic and of course, the tempering cure)
g'raha similarly existed in a middle-ground between assimilation into sharlayan society (as an immigrant/refugee who was granted citizenship after jumping through bureaucracy hoops) and a more marginal experience, as the students of baldesion are seen as a dangerously radical faction within sharlayan and he didn't attend the studium (but had to write his own thesis to access noumenon's restricted areas)
WHILE suscribing to sharlayan ideals, being frustrated with its flaws, and demanding more from the state itself/using it as inspiration to build something greater (the crystarium but also the drive to keep learning and discovering and helping people and fostering harmonious relationships and sharing knowledge). there's LOVE here. and respect. and admiration. can anyone hear me
they both care about people, as individuals, moreso than abstract ideals (like alphinaud or y'shtola for instance), while being able to see the greater picture: alisaie was the closest to louisoix and it's pretty easy to see that her outbursts @ the exarch in post-shb is directly related to her experience of being helpless to stop her grandpa from sacrificing himself. for g'raha himself though, since we have no evidence he ever knew louisoix, i'd say it's more closely related to galuf baldesion, who seemed to have had the same kind of sway among the Students as louisoix with the cicle of knowing & cie. in fact, i would argue lyna had a closer experience to krile than to alisaie (though both obviously work): mysterious wizard adopting a refugee child from another race and raising her lovingly but with a marked distance is like. beat for beat what happened to krile. and we know that krile and him are basically family
(i still havent done eureka because there isnt anyone around whenever i enter the duty sadly so i may be wrong but i know the general storyline)
much more to be said on the question i think (red gang!!) but. i need to get back to work. generally there's like. they have similar yet complementary personalities and the same vision of the world. they enable each other to act their age so to say? g'raha is also patient and gracious in a way louisoix was, i think, and he knows how to listen to her imo. and alisaie is headstrong enough that she pushes him out of his regularly scheduled insecurity spiraling. they just Work Great as a team, Do Not Separate. they're in perfect sync. and naturally they are united in their love and admiration for the warrior of light but it's CLEARLY not the bedrock of their friendship!! they both have their own Stuff!
my knight you have to live you have to get up you have to put your hand over your wound and hold it there. you have to keep walking and walking and walking because you cannot lay down yet, it’s not time. wipe the blood off your breastplate and look up into the sun. lean on your sword if you need to. lift one foot after another. get up. get up. this would be a pitiful grave.
Replaying the Endwalker patches, and in 6.1 there are all the plans to set up the artificial atomos, protect the warding scales, and otherwise prepare to enter the voidgate and try to find Azdaja. And yet Vrtra hesitates.
He mourns her loss every day. As a dragon, his emotions and memories do not fade as mortals do, and her loss is stings now as it did millennia ago. But he is the Satrap of Radz-at-Han, guiding that nation and its people for centuries from the shadows, now finally in the open. He loves them dearly. He is pretty much defined by his love of Thavnair.
And in "A Satrap's Duty" Thavnair responds.
Estinien is the one who arranges this blatant emotional manipulation. He informs Nahbdeen and the rest of the Radiant Host of the mission, and Vrta's hesitation. Then he brings the orphaned Mehrahd and his sister along, specifically to thank Vrtra for the new orphanage where he and his sister can live in safety and happiness together.
"Convincing others to follow their hearts is not my forte" our dragoon says. But if anyone understand dragons, especially the First Brood, it's Estinien. And if he has to push Vrtra through that voidgate, he will.
Though he's found new friends and family, Estinien can never get his own little brother back. He remembers feeling all of Nidhogg's grief for Ratatoskr. There's a chance to save this lost sister of the First Brood. That chance must be taken.
So he gathers Vrtra's people to remind him: "We know how much you've cared for us, and for so long. And we love you too. So you need to go find your sister. We'll be OK. And we're here to help you, as you've always helped us."
And with a final push from the WoL (I always choose to repeat Vrtra's own words back to him), the Satrap relents, dedicating himself to joining the team and finally searching in earnest for Azdaja.
-
(With a little further teasing from Estinien:
Y'shtola: You surprise me, Estinien. For a lone wolf, you've shown an unusual degree of, shall we say, “involvement” in helping Vrtra reach this conclusion. Estinien: 'Twas for the greater good. The wyrm's thundering sighs were keeping his citizens awake at night, and had travelers believing the palace wracked by some unnatural storm.
Said in front of Varshahn, who is taken aback)
Personally I feel it goes even a small bit further than just Estinien relating to the feeling of loss, and thus trying to help Vrtra not end with regrets.
Estinien's relationship to Vrtra feels - to me at least - decidedly NOT like a friendship. It's one of siblings.
Estinien had shared body and soul with Nidhogg, and conversations with him mark often that he had felt his emotions and in some cases it's even implied that he saw memories of Nidhogg. And we know from Vrtra that Nidhogg had called for the youngest, as such the two of them were on speaking terms (no matter what Nidhogg thought of Vrtra's "brood" and how his fury and grief made him scorn him in the end when Vrtra ignored the call). The design of little Varshahn, but also big Varshahn, makes the doll look younger than 30+ Estinien, and big Varshahn even follows Estinien's guidance in regard to fighting.
Estinien pushing Vrtra to find Azdaja might indeed be mostly a case of "My beloved sibling is forever gone, but yours can yet be saved". But it also - to me - feels like Estinien has stepped into Nidhogg's heritage as Vrtra's "older brother", offering advice, emotional support and the occasional ribbing. And Vrtra seems to respond positively to it, because Estinien is one of the few that he not just speaks plainly to, but also without all that polite posturing (which he gives the WoL, or his people, for example). The wyrm is friendly, but also a hint demanding whenever Estinien is before him. And Estinien always seems amused by that.
They in fact behave like that more or less from the moment they fully revealed themselves to each other, when Estinien demands that Vrtra should stop hiding and Vrtra essentially pouts on being given away. Estinien is also the one that constantly pressures Vrtra during the Final Days of Thavnair to make a stand, to not buckle down and to prove that he adores the people that he had looked after for ages. And while Vrtra had rebuked his stand-in satrap and even us, he does listen to Estinien and gives in. Same when he reveals himself to his people. Same when we find the treasure vault. Estinien pokes and Vrtra relents. Or Vrtra tries to posture and Estinien shrugs it off. It is incredibly endearing in a slightly comical way, but while both likely know perfectly well that they are not related at all, they still seem to enjoy that odd dynamic they have gotten into.
I agree! It's a common interpretation, and one I've noted before.
Honestly, Estinien seems to have taken that role in general with the members of the First Brood he interacts with. His growly interactions with Tiamat, for instance, where she compares him to Nidhogg, even. He and Hraesvelgr also interact differently in the short story, post Dragonsong. Hraesvelgr is not as dismissive of Estinien as he was before, or tends to be with most mortals.
Estinien's merging with Nidhogg has left its effects on our dragoon in more than one way, and his sibling-like interactions with the First Brood, as a last link to their lost brother, is an interesting one.
