Like a lot of institutions, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in Montreal has put up a bunch of videos as a form of reaching out to people isolated at home. There are four or five videos of this quartet singing beautifully harmonized liturgical music. They have one of “Adon Olam” set to Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” that’s well worth checking out.
But I absolutely love this setting of En Kelohenu! There’s a calming, meditative quality to it that just wraps you up in a big warm sonic hug. The verses alternate between the Hebrew original and a Ladino translation, and that’s something that you don’t hear very often. There are quite a few modern liturgical melodies that switch back and forth between Hebrew and English, but you don’t tend to hear Ladino mixed with Hebrew as much. Most S&P settings of En Kelohenu that I’ve heard are in either Hebrew or Ladino, but this one uses both languages, and I love that.
TUESDAY AGAIN NO PROBLEM
i think we need tuesday dog again in our lives in 2020
Maybe Ive been oblivious, but I feel like no one in the real world talks about how strange it feels to have a differing level of income than your siblings. For your entire growing lives you’re equal to each other with regards to income (more or less) and then you become an adult and suddenly the choices you make are going to determine where you fall financially in relation to your siblings
Goodness I made this back when I was making $32k and I make more now so this feeling is even more weird for me

Christians: Hey, it’s September, so time to start planning which establishment you’d like to book for your next Christmas party!
Jews: If you mention the High Holidays to me more than four days in advance of Erev Rosh Hashanah I will punch you in the fucking face.
jewish high holy days are so weird because it’s like
celebrate the new year by spending HOURS in synagogue and eating very specific foods and listening to a series of horn blasts meant to parallel our cries to heaven begging for mercy
spend ten days continuing to pray and beg for mercy
fast for 25 hours and spend almost all that time in synagogue STILL begging for mercy and hoping god forgives all your sins, but also, it’s supposed to be a HAPPY day
and then
i don’t know man, fuck, uhhhhh, hang out in a hut for seven days
u ever wake up from a dream like “damn i guess i’m not coping with THAT as well as i thought i was”
