Tybalt (The Shakespeare Character) is named after Tibert (The Prince of Cats), a character from the then popular story Reynard the Fox. Mercutio, in fact, mocks him as 'The Prince of Cats' in reference to this.
Therefore, I propose we name him "Garfield" in all modern retellings of Hamlet

Sometimes, you just need a very simple bit of Jewish music to celebrate one perfect bit of Jewish food. Challah is tasty, and we love to eat it. Simple truth, simply sung. A bijou little bit of perfection.
Once again, I am struck by the value of experience in doing things. Several years ago, I picked up a really basic one-pot chicken rice bake recipe.
Tasty is a website designed largely for people who are new to cooking, interested in learning some nice, basic foods, and who have not yet discovered the melodious voice and endless stream of dad jokes that you get along with your recipes from Chef John. So nothing on Tasty is terribly difficult . . . but nothing is terribly memorable, either. This chicken rice bake is . . . fine, but it's one-pot chicken rice, and there is a limit.
Or, so I thought the first time I made it, several years ago. I came back to it today because I had a bag of chicken thighs that needed using, and most of the other ingredients I also had in the house already. I decided that I was not interested in messing around with careful measuring of spices or chicken broth, and who ever thought that calling for a half cup of onion was a useful measurement?
So I did what I do, with lots of experience cooking in my pocket. I barely measured anything. Five chicken thighs were in the bag, five went into the dish. Two swirls around the pot with olive oil. Salt and pepper and paprika and parsley in amounts that looked good and tasty, tossed in with the chicken and mooshed together to season. Four garlic cloves and the whole red onion, because what am I going to do with the rest of it if I only measure out a half cup? A cereal bowl of broth. I did sort of measure a cup of rice, because I needed something to scoop it out of the rice jar, and it might as well be the cup measure.
How long to bake it? The recipe says 35 - 40 minutes. It also calls for chicken thighs, and I know that chicken thighs are not only the tastiest cut of chicken, they are also the most forgiving. They love longer cook times, so I stuck that pot in the oven for the whole 40 minutes.
And that turned out to be a very good chicken rice bake indeed! The moral of the story: don't be stingy with your seasoning, and cook things for long enough. Learn that now, and the lesson will pay off in Cooking Experience.

Here is a lullaby about a mother wishing a good and prosperous future for her child. The language is called either Judeo-Tat or Juhuri, one of many Jewish languages that are related to those either of the local community or the community from which the Jews had migrated. (This is how you get Yiddish-speaking Jews in Ukraine, or Ladino-speaking Jews in Turkey.)
Juhuri is the language of the Mountain Jews, who come from Azerbaijan and Dagestan. The larger family of Tat languages is Iranian, though Juhuri has rather a lot of Turkic and Arabic vocabulary mixed in. There's not quite as much Hebrew or Aramaic in the mix as you'd expect.
Because a LOT of communities that originally spoke Juhuri had to use lots of Russian during the Soviet era, Juhuri is now considered an endangered language, mostly used in Israel and in communities in the Caucasus mountains. There's one community in a small town in Azerbaijan called Qırmızı Qəsəbə where Juhuri is actually used as an everyday first language, but Qırmızı Qəsəbə has no schools that use Juhuri as the language of instruction, so that doesn't help.

Unfortunately not that surprising. In my experience many if not most pagans, regardless of specific religion, still have a christian worldview with all the supercessionist baggage that entails and they think having renounced jesus specifically means christianity no longer has any influence over them.

Unfortunately, paganism has also become a gateway into Neo-Nazism, especially Nordic paganism. This antisemitism doesn't surprise me one bit.
The friend I lost last year, who said stuff like "voodoo and hoodoo are not for white people" and "I don't think you should study Appalachian folk magic if you're not from Appalachia" told me Lilith was a Christian creation to uphold the patriarchy and that her being "the personification of child death" was a Christian lie.
He was extremely upset when I told him Lilith was a Jewish demon and was ancient before Christianity was even thought of.
I just find it so fascinating that people just can't seem to grasp the idea of "hey this very very old culture came up with a mythological explanation for why sometimes children die suddenly seem for seemingly no reason." Seems like the kind of things a lot of cultures might come up with!
So many cultures when you go back have various just-so stories that explain "yes this happens because of X."
It's because it's Jews. We have no culture, dontcha know.

*The thing in question can be culture, wealth, inventions, history, technology, infrastructure, prosperity, religious texts, identity... it's never something that Belongs To The Jews.
To this outsider (so, y'know, thoughts priced at a discount on this subject), it is because It's Jews, but perhaps not necessarily in a straightforward way. It's a very common asshole test, imo, for someone who has an ideal-such as 'don't appropriate a belief' or 'don't tell minorities about their own cultures and faiths'-to see whether they actually apply that ideal even when it's inconvenient, much less involves a real sacrifice. 'Inconvenience' being 'can't just claim this belief and feel cool about it', 'sacrifice' being 'needs to engage with critical thought and doing the work to address a lot of unconscious junk floating around in one's thoughts'. Jews, though, for us Westerners, are very often the minority on many given questions, especially aaaaaaanything touching on faithor at least, regarded as the minority, as though their existence is chiefly in relation to us. Judaism isn't the oldest religion on Earth, but it's surely got to be in the running for the oldest religion on Earth that is still practiced across the world with ideas Westerners are likely to have been exposed to, however indirectly. Which unfortunately means Jews get a lot of chances for people to fail the asshole test, and that's before any other expressly instilled hostilities are taken into account.
It is the oldest religion in the world still practiced today that uses permanent structures. The Aboriginals are of course over here breaking the graph re: oldest religion at all, and many Native American and First Nations religions are "they're old, we've been doing this for as long as we've been a nation and that's all we're telling you," so it's difficult to say how many of them predate Judaism. Probably at least some, probably not all.
Judaism's oldest antecedents--that's to say, the point where it began breaking off from the rest of Canaanite religion but still looked closer to that than it did to modern Judaism--date to about 2000-1500 BCE. The earliest Hindu literature is just a hair younger--1500-1000 BCE. Note that just as Judaism was a baby at this point, this is only the earliest bit of Hinduism--most Vedic literature was written in the 800s BCE, and Krishna doesn't appear until sometime between 800 and 600 BCE.
Jainism dates to "probably the 800s BCE with a small margin for error to the younger end."
Zoroastrianism and Confucianism both date to the 500s BCE. The Buddha is born sometime between 563 and 400 BCE.
The Second Temple period begins in 515 BCE. At some point shortly before this, the written Torah was redacted into its final form.
Taoism dates to the 300s BCE.
The first Christian Council dates to sometime between 50 and 63 CE.
The Temple was destroyed, giving rise to rabbinic Judaism, in 70 CE.
Christianity in the most basic form it exists today dates to the Council of Nicea in 325 CE.
Muhammad lived between 570 and 632 CE. The Qur'an was written by one of his followers beginning with his death in 632 CE.
The entirety of both the Greek and Roman religions fits within the lifespan of Judaism. The beginnings of the ancient Egyptian religion date to the prehistoric era, but the version of it we'd recognize from school, with Isis and Osiris and so on? Yeah, that only dates to about the 2600s BCE. It predated Judaism, but Judaism's lifespan from "we wrote down the version of Torah we still read" to, well, now, is roughly equal to the entire existence of the ancient Egyptian religion as we'd recognize it.
We refuse to die. And that pisses off a whole lot of people.
A lot of progressive people’s idea of justice is rooted in the idea that having tradition as a value at all is inherently backwards/reactionary and holding everyone back from progress, and thus progress necessitates letting tradition die.
When it comes to some minority traditions, they may be willing to extend an exception, out of an image of those traditions as some kind of “noble savage” deeper Natural Truth (and this not tradition at all), and/or a spin that said tradition was actually secretly proto-progressivism the whole, and/or a devaluing of the tradition to little more than quirky ritual play-acting.
Mostly they just don’t think too hard about it, and don’t actually spend enough time around indigenous people to even know enough about their traditions or face this contradiction.
But they are forced to face this contradiction with Jews more often, due to how much their arch-nemesis Evangelical Christianity relies on claims to Judaism via supersessionism and “Judeo-Christian values”, and now, post-Oct 7th, with the culture war over the existence of Israel.

yeah actually we removed the big bad wolf from the little red riding hood story because portraying violence against minors is really messed up. yeah. yeah also the wolf narrative was really predatory and had had some icky grooming vibes and a fable meant for literal children shouldn’t have implied p*do shit and grape so now little red riding hood goes into the woods and nothing happens and she goes to grandma’s house. don’t worry our kids will still stick to the path and know not to follow to wolves implicitly because we told them to and children should always do as their told. just like little red riding hood does now.

This song by Michael Hunter Ochs is sung by Cantor Deborah Katchko-Gray, and I've just learned something kind of weird and cool about it. The phrase "when we sing, we pray twice" sounds very Jewish. Specifically, it sounds like something that a modern Reform cantor might tell her congregation, having learned it in her own Reform synagogue, and possibly having had it reinforced by the teachers at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. (Say that ten times fast!)
In short, it really does sum up how Jews -- American Jews in particular, but not necessarily limited -- feel about song and prayer. But when I went to look up the origin of the phrase, I found a lot of people claiming that it came from St. Augustine, rather famously Not A Jew. I've also found people claiming that it's only attributed to St. Augustine, and that it actually comes from a sixteenth-century Christian hymnal or from Martin Luther (a famous antisemite!).
How did the Jews get it? Well, I suspect that it became popular in American religious circles around the middle of the twentieth century. That was also a rather unusual moment of openness in relationships between Jews and Christians, and a lot of religious reform taking place in both communities focused on inclusion, accessibility, and congregational agency. I would not be at all surprised if some rabbi picked it up from some priest or minister at some mildly hippy-dippy interfaith religious retreat somewhere. And because it's so catchy and sums up a lot of the way American Judaism was heading, we just kind of adopted it.
It's a grand idea, and Christianity has already adopted so much core material from Judaism (plus the hymn tune LEONI) that I figure we can snurch a few nice turns of phrase in return. Nothing wrong with that!

I just got back from spending a week in the company of my four-year-old niece, who is the Cutest Person Ever. To the surprise of no one, Disney was involved; my niece is highly emotionally sensitive about conflict, and therefore isn't really into media with plots, but she's been experimenting with actual Disney movies recently, so we watched Encanto together. My niece has seen it several times, so she was very diligent about explaining when the scary parts were happening, and also reassuring us that it would all be okay in the end. She's very kind that way.
Me, I was excited to see Encanto, because I hadn't actually seen it before, and I knew relatively little about it. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but "Disney Does One Hundred Years Of Solitude" was not it! And yet, there it is! RadicalEdward up there agrees with me, and I love his observations that, while yes, Encanto definitely reveals that its producers have read their Gabriel García Márquez, it's a big world, and Encanto can absolutely coexist with One Hundred Years Of Solitude. He describes them as the "theme park" and "freakshow" versions of the same story, and welcomes both. It turns out that Disney-style weirdness and Latin American magical realism really are two great tastes that taste great together.
Now, I read One Hundred Years Of Solitude well before I saw Encanto, so I made the connection pretty quickly. But I kind of wonder how my niece will experience them. She's four, but she loves Encanto, and she'll probably watch it many more times before she's old enough to read classic novels. I wonder what she'll think of One Hundred Years Of Solitude, having such early memories of Encanto. I hope she makes the connection between the two, and I'm kind of looking forward to when she's old enough to read García Márquez and have that really cool conversation!

The more I find of Abraham Dunajewsky's music, the more I think we're all sleeping on a pretty fantastic composer. Most of us, if we know Dunajewsky at all, know his "Av Harachamim" from the Torah service -- and even then, an awful lot of American Jews don't realize that it's not the same piece as Sulzer's "Ein Kamocha" that usually precedes it.* Here, entirely separated from anything Sulzer, is an arrangement of Dunajewsky's "V'shamru," the short text that reminds us why we are all gathered at the synagogue on a Saturday morning instead of sleeping in or going to the farmer's market or playing baseball or something. There's no bouncy chorus, and very little repetition of the words -- the words are decorated, yes, but the text actually goes pretty straight through. The piece is slow, but it moves, giving you time to really consider why we're all here while not dragging proceedings to a complete halt.
*Different mood, different mode, but arts education got cut in the Reagan era, so you tend not to learn how to listen to music in school. This is one of the reasons that I play and discuss music with my Hebrew students, so that they can make these distinctions. And some of them actually do get very good at learning how to listen to music!

As an ethnomusicologist who works on Jewish liturgical music, it's rare that I don't have some service ditty or another stuck in my head at any given moment.
And you never know which one might emerge from the mouth, either!
Yom Shabbaton is a zemer, a Shabbat hymn, attributed to Yehuda Halevi that expands on the theme of Shabbat as a time of rest. Linda Hirschhorn has set just the refrain here: "A day of sacred rest, whose memory must never be forgotten. Its memory is like the aroma of a pleasing offering. The dove found rest there, and there the weary shall find rest." (The dove, in this case, refers to the dove that Noah sent out from the Ark to find dry land; there's a legend that the day the dove finally found land, indicating that the Flood was receding, was Shabbat.)
