Bankotsu and Jakotsu Are in Love: An Analysis
(happy late Pride Month)
The Mt. Hakurei arc is a beloved arc, for good reason. Aside from the overall themes, the beautiful story and the character development we get for Kikyō, it introduces seven unique villains: The Shichinintai, or Band of Seven.
Now, given the state of my blog, it might seem reasonable to assume I’m a biased party, especially given I’m currently driving the BanJak ship on a desolate little river. But I do try to be objective in all my analyses, including this one— and I believe that in an objective sense, the evidence supports that Bankotsu and Jakotsu are in love with each other.

Clearly this story is a beloved InuSess piece.
It’s been nearly 11 years since you published this work, and it endures high above the rest. Tell us your thoughts. Did you think it would be so long lasting? Did you set out to write a best hit story? What were your own expectations when you wrote it?
Honestly, I don’t think I ever considered whether it would be long lasting or not. When I began writing fanfiction, the stories were mostly for myself and to help decompress from my “real job”. As with all the stories I write, my hopeful expectation is that they give the reader a mental break from the heaviness of our current world and whatever stresses they have going on in their own lives. That’s what reading is to me, and I hope to give others the same type of reprieve.
Can you talk us through the process of writing this piece – from initial idea to finished draft?
I’m not great with rough drafts. I’ve tried them in the past and they just turn out kind of meh. The vast majority of my stories start with an initial idea where I have point A (the start) and point C (the end) pretty well solidified, but the journey getting between those points is hardly set in stone. For me, one of the personal joys of storytelling is figuring out how to get from point A to point C. That is the beauty of storytelling—the characters have problems I can actually solve.
At the heart of your story is the relationship between Sesshomaru and Inuyasha. How did you develop them while keeping the story moving forward?
I’ve always loved the Sesshomaru/Inuyasha dynamic and I adore them together, however, I have never thought that journey would be an easy one. There is far too much animosity and hurt between the two of them. Therefore, my Inu/Sessh stories nearly always need a catalyst that puts them together, the understanding and love builds from there. Sesshomaru is far too proud and stubborn a character to have any quick emotional turn around and Inuyasha is too impulsive and defensive to accept that change of heart easily.
What was your favorite part of the story to write?
The beginning and the end. I enjoy the set up for a story and by the time I reach the end, I’m ready for the characters to have some closure.
What was the most challenging?
Figuring the path from point A to point C. That is often also the most rewarding part—trying to keep them in character and making their decisions and actions believable.
Tell us about your editing and revising process. How did you know you were ready to publish?
Oh, I’m a terrible editor. I don’t exactly hate grammar, but I don’t love it either. I’ve often said I consider myself a storyteller, not a writer. What I mean by that is that I don’t agonize over punctuation, the correct word choice, or other things that grammar lovers tend to salivate over. Truth be told, without proper editing, I doubt any of my stories should truly be published. In my heart, I hope readers understand that fanfiction is something the storyteller does out of love and affection for the characters and can look past grammatical mistakes.
Tell us about your other stories. What things inspire you? Where do you get your ideas?
Hmm . . . I feel like my stories come from all kinds of places but mostly observation regarding humanity’s strengths and weaknesses. I’ve been told most of my stories revolve around “found family” and I would have to agree. I think a therapist would most likely make something of that. I just know giving my characters a solid support base and a happy ending makes me happy in return.
What advice would you give to other writers?
For me, the fear of never trying had to finally overcome the fear of failure. I’d like to say that process was short, but it was truly over a decade or more before I took the leap. I think we all write for different reasons. For me, it is a way to mentally decompress. Writing isn’t something I have to do, it’s something I want to do and that makes all the difference.
Do you have any comments on unfinished stories, yours or others?
Personally, I don’t have a lot of unfinished stories. Unfinished stories on fanfiction sites was always one of my biggest bug-a-boos. Not that I don’t understand, but it was really frustrating getting into a story and having it go silent. For that reason, when I wrote fanfiction, I would make certain the story was at least 2/3 complete before the first chapter went up. By 2/3 of the way through, barring any major catastrophe on my end, the story would get finished.
Do you have any advice for writers who don’t get a lot of acknowledgements?
That is a very difficult position to be in. My first published series, “Reaping Covetous” hasn’t sold well and I adore the characters in that series. I’ve published other stories that have done well, but still not much love for “Reaping Covetous” and that hurts. Mostly it hurts because I want others to love those characters as much as I do. A lot of the time, it’s not about the writing, it’s about finding the audience for your characters. That can be terribly difficult and something I’m still struggling with. I have a poster hanging on the wall with a unicorn on its back laying on a therapist couch with the therapist saying, “You just have to believe in yourself”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at that poster.
Any other things you’d like to say?
A big thank you to the Inu/Sessh fandom. Without your support, love, and encouraging comments, I’m not sure if I would have ever gained the confidence to write and publish my own stories. I will always have a deep love for this fandom and the Inu/Sessh world. In my world, Sesshomaru finally pulls the stick out of his ass and realizes just what an amazing individual Inuyasha is and that loving him is a hell of a lot more rewarding than trying to eliminate him.
Happy reading everyone J
Thank you

You, an elf, married a human, built a small farm and raised children. Your children grew up, had families, and started farms nearby. So did their children, and those children’s children. Now your many descendants have formed a bustling city, and you are known as the official “town grandparent”.
After the official ceremony every year was the most exciting event of the festival, Grandfather’s stories
Everyone would gather and sit close. The center of the group was saved for you. As the crowds grew, a microphone and speakers were added. It wasn’t really needed though, they were quiet, ready to listen to Grandfather.
You take your place and smile at your beloved children.
“I want to tell you a different story today. You know the story of our town, kids, but do you know how I meet my wife, your mother, grandmother?”
Grandfather smiled warmly as he thought of his beloved wife. He started his tale.
I had spoken up at the elf village meeting about befriending humans and suddenly all the faces of the villagers I had known glared at me. I couldn’t understand their expressions. These were the faces of my work buddies, my drinking buddies, my family and friends. As I asked those closest to me what was wrong, I missed the elders passing their judgement for my transgression of mentioning “humans”. Apparently there was a long standing law that forbid talking about humans in the village meeting. The punishment was supposed to be death, but the old lady elder said she thought it was too strict and that banishment would suffice.
Her words were the last words I heard before being picked up and thrown out of the village. Needless to say, they had been playing on a loop in my brain for months now.
‘Death would have been better’, I moaned. My wanderings had taken me further away from everything and everyone I ever loved or cared for. I felt so sad, so miserable, so hopeless. My hunger and thirst were the only things that kept my company. The last drink of water I had was from the rain a week ago. The further I got from my old home, the less food I found. I was a vegetarian, although I would eat an egg or drink milk if it were given to me.
The forest had long disappeared from my vision. All that was before me was grass plains. If I had been myself I might have marveled about the vastness of the grasslands. But I wasn’t.
‘I shall die here,’ I thought. ‘At least I can be of use to the land.’
That was my last thought as I fell to my eternal slumber.
—
The hunting party had been wandering the grasslands for days in search of rabbits to capture. They had hoped to capture enough that they could establish a rabbitry which would hopefully provide them enough food for the winter. They had come out to the grasslands determined to make new homes, free from taxation and slavery. Happily they built three buildings, one a barn for the animals they had, another for lodgings, and a last for kitchen and food storage. They were unprepared for the bitter cold of the plains. The wind rolled over the plains in gale forces. The temperature dipped lower than they had ever known. Without trees to burn for fire, they tried various elements from dried grass to dried manure. The grass smoked them out, but the dried manure worked. That first winter had been brutal. They had lost one third of their homesteaders from illness. Many lost husbands or wives. Several children died. Several parents orphaned their children. Loss and sadness were daily friends.
By spring, a few had considered returning to the town they had come from, but they were reminded that they would become slaves because of the way they had left. They discussed the situation with everyone, giving everyone an equal opportunity to speak.
“We could die here.”
“We’ll definitely die there.”
“Do you want to die a slave or free?”
Finally it was an orphaned teenager who suggested raising rabbits.
Silence and then raucous applause greeted the teenage girl. Adults praised her and started planning how they would capture the rabbits alive. A group stayed behind to build pens. The others would be hunters. The plan was tested and soon groups of hunters spread out seeking hope for their futures.
The grassland was plenty with rabbits and small mammals. The humans had learned to be silent as they hunted for rabbits which is why I didn’t hear them.
The teenage girl was the first to find me. Quietly she bent forward to see if I was dead. When she couldn’t rouse me, she reached out for help. The band of hunters carefully carried my unconscious self and the rabbits they had caught back to their homestead of now four buildings.
The lonely teen girl dedicated herself to caring for me. When asked she told the others that she had found me and felt obliged to nurse me to health. My looks intrigued her. The young woman didn’t know I was an elf, just that I was a being that needed help.
—
‘I smell grass,’ I thought. ‘Wait. Does that mean I am alive?’
I shifted.
The young woman startled. “Sir, are you okay? You are safe here.”
I slowly opened my green eyes. The first thing I saw was the tender, caring expression of a young human maiden. Vibrant purple eyes gazed into mine.
“Hi,” the maiden blushed. Later she told me she thought my eyes were beautiful.
I attempted to speak but my mouth was dry. I wanted to sit up but my body was weak.
“Here’s some water,” the woman offered. She put a bundle of dried grass behind me to help me sit up a bit. As she gently lifted me to place the make shift pillow, I could smell flowers.
“My name is Rina. I found you in the great grasslands while we were hunting for rabbits. We brought you here so I could nurse you to health. Can you tell me your name?”
I swallowed a sip of water, then another before being able to speak.
“I am called Zeno,” I whispered.
“May I call you Zeno?” Rina asked softly.
I nodded slowly. I was unsure of where I was and what was going on around me. I heard voices and cattle lowing. I smelled flowers and milk. The girl seemed nice. Perhaps she would tell me.
“Where am I?” Zeno’s voice cracked.
Rina offered me some more water. When I finished, she took the glass.
“This place has no name. We are a group of people who wanted freedom, so we set out to the grasslands. It has been a challenging adventure, but we intend to make a home here. The few of us that survived the winter are going to raise rabbits and hopefully plant some crops. My mother and father died during the winter, so I am alone. But it is okay. My friends care for me and I for them.”
She paused to look at me. She said that I appeared tired.
“You may sleep if you want. I can make some broth for you so you can eat when you get up. It’s not fancy. I just found some roots that the rabbits like. We’ve all eaten it without any sickness, if you’re worried.”
I could tell the woman was sincere. I wasn’t dead yet. I could trust her. I slowly closed my eyes.
Rina leaned over me and removed the makeshift pillow.
“Rest safely, Zeno.” She rose and left to start cooking.
I fell asleep smelling flowers.

The prince has been cursed, forcing him to live the rest of his life as a woman. At least that's the story the royal family is going with, because apparently an "unbreakable genderswap curse" is (sadly) much more acceptable than the princess being trans.

Let's assume they don't know each other. Sess walks into the tent thinking it's just some mundane dog with human like face. He looks up and sees the back of a shiro inu. Inuyasha had gotten tired of sitting on his stool and had stood up and walked the length of his leash. His back was to the audience. He was tugging at the leash, growling softly. Only Sess could hear. Meanwhile Sess's jaw is open. He thought he was the only shiro inu, but it looks like another. His hope is lit.
Sess hears the growl and wants to rush to Inu's aid, but then Inu turns and Sess realizes it's a half breed and his face contorts from happy to angry. Inu changes from angry to happy when he sees another dog demon. He sees hope for the first time in years. But then as quickly he sees the angry face and he fears.
