a/n: the day has finally come and i'm so happy to be starting this series! i will say that i've never written a prologue let alone a series so i apologize if this sucks. i'm also going to be very busy with work next week so the first chapter may not come out for a while as i try to balance my personal life and my work life! nevertheless, i hope you guys enjoy the prologue and feel free to leave feedback! :)
Life was a fickle concept that no one could quite understand. The universe provided an immense amount of goodwill along with an equal amount of sorrow. After all, there needed to be a balance between two of the most important scales in life. Whether it was the birth of an individual or a loved one passing, everything was exactly how it was intended to be even if they couldn’t come to terms with it. Despite the universe reigning supreme over most natural consequences, it was no match for supernatural beings that had cheated death, ensuring that the balance would be disrupted.
There had been a time where supernatural beings weren’t roaming the earth amongst humans, but it was nothing compared to countless centuries of their newfound existence. It was a whole different world compared to the way humans lived their mortal lives—whether you were talking about sirens, witches, werewolves, or even vampires. Of course, they all differed from one another when it came to abilities and lifespans, but they all had one thing in common—they had started off as a mere human but soon came into their supernatural abilities. Sirens had made a deal with the devil to remain youthful. Witches were born into a bloodline. Werewolves had a family curse that was triggered by taking another person’s life. However, vampires were something else entirely. They had once lived as humans before being turned by one's blood and died with it in their system. Whether it was by choice or pushed onto them, they were still reborn at the end of the day and lived with the consequences that came with it.
It was easier for some vampires to come to terms with their new lease on life or rather being an undead creature that didn’t have to follow the set of rules created by the universe. They had adapted pretty quickly to the new world and were able to fly under the radar rather seamlessly. Not to mention, they had daylight rings or necklaces that would allow them to walk outside when it was still daytime. Well, not all vampires did. Vampires who had befriended witches would be able to secure the jewelry and were known as daywalkers. However, those who weren’t as lucky were bound to the cliche rules of mother nature–they could only roam at night. In Jiyong’s case, he was able to obtain a rather gaudish ring that almost looked like a family heirloom in a way. It was the only reason he could get away with his long list of crimes without anyone raising their eyebrows in return.
Because of the rise of vampires in society, there had also been an increase in both mythologists and professional vampire hunters. Mythologists tended to be fascinated by the possibility of supernatural life existing and were practically married to their countless mythology books in their offices. On the other hand, vampire hunters once started off as mythology professors and slowly descended into madness more often than not to the point where they made it their mission to travel across the world and rid the universe of such disgusting monsters. However, just like humans, no two vampires were the same which was something vampire hunters never seemed to understand. They had been conditioned by their own books and brains to hate vampires and saw them as vile creatures that cheated death to incite violence in their wake.
Kwon Jiyong was no stranger to the war between humans and vampires like himself. He had been alive long enough to know that there would never be a timeline where the two species would be able to coexist in peace. Throughout each century of his life, he had witnessed endless acts of violence that only made it that much more obvious. When he first transitioned into a vampire at the ripe age of 25 in 1888, he had been completely blindsided by how many inconveniences came with his new lifestyle. He had this insatiable hunger for blood that he quite frankly didn’t know how to control and he felt like he was losing it. Not only did he experience hunger like no other, but he also felt every single emotion of his become heightened as a result of his transition. Jiyong had descended into madness and he felt helpless since he had absolutely no one in his corner to help him with this new and long chapter of his life. For a while, he was plagued by nightmares of the night he turned. Quite frankly, he avoided reflecting on that period of his life every chance he got. It was a reminder of everything he would never get to have–a stable life, the ability to start a family, and most importantly–love. Between the inability to live a normal enough life and the tenfold of emotions that tortured him after being reborn, he could only think of one possible solution that would make all of his troubles disappear in an instant–turning his humanity switch off.
To some vampires, turning off one's humanity was seen as a cowardly thing to do. However, for the latter, it was seen as a means for survival and self preservation. Vampires were meant to be a predatory species anyway, so why not make the most out of it? Sure there were some vampires who wanted to change the world for the better, but they were a dying breed and were seen as weak by those who decided to shut their humanity off. Besides, humans had only repaid them with violence and only added fuel to the already out of control fire. They clearly had no intentions of rubbing shoulders with vampires anytime soon.
When Jiyong had turned his humanity off over a century ago, he had no idea what beast would awaken from inside of him. His once heightened emotions were replaced with rather shallow and insincere ones. Jiyong still had his charm from when he was a human, but instead of it being a cheeky type of charm, it was a rather manipulative charm that he would always use to his advantage in order to get what he wanted. There was always something about him that would draw unsuspecting humans to him like a moth to a flame. Maybe it was his gorgeous brown eyes or the way he carried himself ever so confidently. Or perhaps it was something else. Although he had an inflated ego, he wasn’t stupid enough to think that the citizens in each town he “settled” down in wouldn’t notice the path of destruction that would befall there. There would be multiple news reports and tabloids that would cover the horrendous animal attacks that seemed to plague their small town. The local police department of each town had their work cut out for them as they tried to locate the animal who was causing all this bloodshed in their small town. Their issue was that they only seemed to have a very surface leveled perspective of the world they lived in. They didn’t stop to think that maybe there was a different reason for what had been occurring—one that would warp their minds and make them unravel if they tried to understand it in the slightest.
However, that was a long time ago. He had since then reunited with his humanity, but not entirely. Of course he still needed to feed on people's flesh and blood, but he always made sure to never go for ones that were pure of heart, so instead he chose a more humane road. He would make sure to only feed on people who were the scum of the earth—people with immoral principles, criminals, or just people that society would be better off without. Jiyong knew it sounded hypocritical. I mean, how could he get to decide who’s a good person when he was the one responsible for so many deaths? Didn’t it make him just as bad as the people he killed, if not worse? Maybe.
Despite this, nothing was worse than the alternative–killing people for sport and being one step closer to returning to his old ways. That’s why he felt like this was proper atonement for his past sins. His past was something that would never sit right with him no matter how much he tried brushing it off. That was one of the downsides of immortality. Every single memory of Jiyong’s was like an endless film reel with both joyous and sorrowful moments that he would have to carry with him for the rest of his eternal life. Some memories seemed more distant than others, but once he retrieved them, he could remember all the concrete details as if it were yesterday. On the other hand, when he was forced to remember such a haunting memory, he practically felt like he was drowning in his own body with no means of being rescued. Jiyong had his fair share of demons, but he had all of eternity to make up for it in the town where it all started.
