I went to the most liberal public college in Maryland, worked across from the main meeting room. I heard the BSU having to fight the administration for Black students to even be physically safe there, over and over and over, to very little effect. Multiple people transferred or dropped out or were pushed to mental and physical health crisis because of the lack of opportunities, impossible standards, and straight up hate and danger. Multiple Black professors left or were 'let go' for similar reasons.

This shit is baked into every inch of every US institution. Realistically, my school probably killed people in a similar way.

My first time operating CCTV cameras I was handed control over what was essentially 50 independently moving eyes that collectively covered an area about the size of a football field and from that experience I now know that

Suddenly having 50 moving eyes can make you disoriented and barfy and the adjustment period sucks ass

It takes both more and less time than you’d think to figure out what the structure as a whole looks like and where those eyes ARE

After you get used to it the entirety of the structure itself and all of the eyes you can see from feels like an extension of your nervous system in a very bizarre way. Like I have dreams now from the perspective of A Building and I’m not sure how to describe that.

Once you are aware of an unreachable blind spot it nags at you constantly and you can feel it like a hard little lump under your skin you need to poke and scratch at and it’s ardghgguychgghhbhhhbhhh

Given what few snippets we get of his military career, it seems like the events of Fall of Sam were kind of the culmination of a trend toward...easily distracted chaotic good who couldn't really handle authority's choices anymore with a side of stone cold badass?

I wouldn't say easily distracted. When he's locked in, he's fully committed and nothing and nobody is going to slow him down for a single second. But any time he's not required to be locked in, he's Actively Looking For Fun Guy.

He's not surprised by the events of Fall of Sam Axe for sure. He's shaking his head and sighing in disappointment but he's a long way from shocked. That's a guy who's seen fuck ups before and superior officers who have no clue, and this is just another in a long list. He still believes that there's overall good intent, just not the way it's handled.

I think he's just done enough with those fuck ups and officers with no clue, to stop fighting when he's about to get kicked out. Like he pulls his card with the photos and gets his retirement. But he doesn't put in any effort to stay in, at that point.

Tom Card et al tried to strip him of everything to force him to be the tool they wanted. Even killing his father when the man showed some hint of decency and care for Michael.

But in doing so they trapped him with the people who actually love him. They forced him to spend his time with people who speak to his better angels. They forced him towards connection.

They tried to use his deep seated need for acceptance and belonging to drive him towards them. Instead they drove him towards his actual community, actual connection. And that community ultimately freed him being a tool of the state
