At CrossBones Graveyard, the unconsecrated mass burial ground for sex workers, the poor, and those who took their own lives is now marked by a beautiful garden and lovingly tended to by caretakers who see it as a sacred space. There are also clergy who do regular services of remembrance, regret, and reconciliation to apologize for the wrongs of the church and to honor the dead. There are no headstones here but there are flowers and bees and healing herbs and pilgrims who come from all over to pay their respects to the outcast dead of London.

I’m amazed at how many people this post has touched. This is my most reblogged entry. I hope more people will visit and donate to CrossBones, especially since the land is being leased. At some point it could be paved over if it’s not kept protected.

CrossBones is beautiful, an absolute must visit. The place has such a calming, peaceful atmosphere even in bustling Southwark. Its a beautiful reminder of Londoners past, and the ones whose lives were rarely recorded or spoken about due to their trades or ends. Many of the burials here were children and paupers.

It is mentioned in records in the late 16th century, but it is thought that it likely dates to earlier. Sex workers were forbidden to operate within the City walls, but operated in Bankside under licence from the Bishop of Winchester (who technically owned the land). The ‘stews’ aka pleausre houses were licencsed by the Bishop in 1161, and signed by Thomas Becket (yes, that one from Canterbury, he was Lord Chancellor). These women were known as ‘Winchester Geese’ and had a degree of protection from their bishop.

Part of it was excavated in the 1990s by the Museum of London ahead of the Jubilee Line extension for a new powerbsub-station. They removed 148 skeletons from a small area, which they estimate is less than 1% of those buried at the site. The site is not large, and the general estimate of burials is 15,000. It is thought up to 60% of these may have been children.

I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things

Jingle Jangle is one of my favorite movies despite technically being a “Christmas” movie because damn near everything about it is impeccably executed.

And the choreography and songs are all amazing and far above what I’d expect from a Netflix “Christmas” movie.

Legitimately even if you don’t like Christmas movies, please take a moment to watch at least this video. It pulls from multiple historic Black dance and music styles and is truly one of the best pieces I’ve seen. The entire movie is well worth it but at least treat yourself to this.

one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.

When I worked at a specialty pet food store we damaged out so many of the dog cookies to eat when we were too understaffed to go for lunch. Like iced granola bars, they were legit good 😂

I learned precision driving because my parents signed me up for one of those "driver's ed taught by cops" programs but I got a guy who quit being a county trooper bc it was bs, went and became an ambulance driver, retired, and gave zero fucks.

I got the regular driving down pretty well with a few required sessions left, so he was just like well would you like to learn how to drive without an egg rolling off your dash, control a skid, and play pole position on the Beltway without getting tagged by a cop?
