30 Days Knitting Challenge - XXI

Day 21: Do you knit gifts for friends and family for the holidays or birthdays?

Are you fucking kidding me?! How do you think I got started with the whole knitting thing? I had been in desperate need for some cheap christmas presents, bought a few balls of cheap yarn and taught myself via youtube and ravelry how to knit scarfs, hats and fingerless mittens. And I never stopped ever since.

I still knit gifts every now and then but I only do them when the recipient really wants some knitted goods or will at least appreciate them.

Day 20: Do you knit in public? Was anyone offended/incredibly happy/curious that you were doing so?

I like to knit on bus drives in winter as well as on train rides in general. I have had your typical mixture of reactions - grannys being happy to see a young person knit, random people being amazed/stunned by the fact that you can in fact make things like socks yourself, and on one or two occasions men half mocking half flirting over the fact that I can indeed knit. Nothing too great or worse...

30 Days Knitting Challenge - XIX

Day 19: Do you watch movies and/or listen to podcasts while knitting? What are your favorite things to knit to?

Since I am one of those people that think there should be some things in this world that deserve your undivided attention you will very rarely find me doing anything else while knitting. While I am physically and mentally capable of multitasking I do not like it and I actually do not like it when people (like my mum) are actually UNABLE to concentrate on one thing only. I believe it is a horrible thing. That being said I do not mind some nice music every now and then myself but those times are the exception.

Day 18 - Do you knit english or continental?

I am a continental knitter all the way! I admire those who can knit fast while knitting english but truth be told continental knitting just comes to me more natural. In my opinion the movements required are more fluid as well.

DAY 17: HAVE YOU EVER HAD A PROJECT THAT YOU LOVED BECOME RUINED? WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND IT?

Luckily not yet. Everything I made was well received and (so far) taken good care of. I didn't destroy a project in the maikng either, so....yeah.

All yarn is hand-dyed by myself on a sturdy 75% wool, 25% nylon sock-weight base. The yarn is superwash, but minimal bleeding is possible due to the hand-dyed nature of the yarn, so caution is urged when washing. All dyes are food-safe ;-)

30 Days Knitting Challenge - XVI

DAY 16: HAVE YOU EVER HAD A KNITTING RELATED INJURY?

No, I haven't. I did not even get a tired wrist or something like that. In fact I actually wonder how someone would get a knitting related injury?

A colleague of mine told me, she once stabbed her hand with a dpn (like stabbingthroughher hand!!!) by accident and despicing dpns ever since. o_O

Haul the day!

I went shopping today for new yarn and not only bought 10 skeins of cotton yarn for a wrap-around jacket for my sister but also managed to get my hands on some KnitPro interchangeable cable needles and cables! WHOOOOHOoOO!

And if that was not enough, a colleague at work is going to give me her unused knitting book and my sister managed to get some needles and yarn/wool from her boyfriend's grandma for me.

I love it when a plan succeeds. >:D

30 Days Knitting Challenge - XV

DAY 15: WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PATTERN AND WHY?

If I have to pick I'd choose those Roku Mitts.

It's not that I HATE that pattern. I am just tired of it since I had to make 4 pairs of mittens within a week using it. I just can't see it any more.

I went wild on our team mascot (a mole fingerpuppet) at work. I knitted him a chainmail vest and crocheted helmet, shield and sword, although I only own crochet hooks for savig dropped stitches in my knitting (which happens very rarely)...

I think I am addicted to yarn...<_<

30 Days Knitting Challenge - XIV

DAY 14: WHAT’S THE WORST YARN/FIBER THAT YOU’VE WORKED WITH AND WHY?

I will go for Schachenmayr Bravo 100% acrylic yarn. I had to use it due to budget reasons. It was itchy and not soft at all. Even Red Heart was better and those are like 30ct cheaper than the one mentioned above.

Don't get me wrong. I like 100% acrylic yarn -if it's of good quality.

Best investment EVER!!

So, my little sister wanted some handknit fingerless mittens as a reward for her good grades this year. She picked a flat knitted pair with a fair isle pattern. Me being the dpn-lover I am just decided to knit the pattern in the round, but I had a hard time with the pattern itself, because carrying the yarn along was difficult. The yarns got tangled and I tend to knit too tight.

After half a mitt I just started to get frustrated and decided to make a move. I went to a store nearby and bought what I would describe as a "Fair Isle thimble" (since I don't know if there is a special english word for it).

THIS THING IS MAGICAL !!!

Not only does it keep my yarns separated but also forces me to knit more loose. I will NEVER regret buying it. <3

30 Days Knitting Challenge - XIII

DAY 13: DO YOU HAVE YARN THAT YOU LOVE BUT CAN’T FIND A PROJECT FOR?

No, I haven't but I was very tempted to byu some when I found a package of seven skeins of bulky orange alpaca wool (favorite animal - favorite wool "size" - favorite color) but there only was that one package and I am a fattie so it would have never been enough for a sweater... ;_; Still...it's still on my mind...
