First full crochet blanket
Made a giant Granny Square blanket out of King Cole Toastie yarn. Finished, aside from sewing ends, last night.
This is the blanket I was originally buying up yarn for, during my former local yarn store's closing down sale and was gifted a shop project to finish.
Do you knit and watch TV at the same time? Emily ranks the 22 TV shows she remembers watching while knitting over the past 10 years.
I've gone and written a looooong blog post about all the TV shows I've watched while knitting (and sometimes doing crochet). It was inspired after having a peek through my archive here on Tumblr.
I recalled 22 different TV shows that I watched and decided that I would rank them for watchability while knitting. The incredibly subjective criteria was:
Do you need your eyes on the screen all the time?
How good is the dialogue?
Are the plots easy to follow along with?
Do you notice how repetitive it gets?
But I suppose this begs the question:
Do you like to watch TV while you knit or crochet? And if you do, what do you like to watch (particular shows or genres)?

So my favourite yarn shop is closing down in a few days
This crochet blanket? It's a project the store owner has started. The owner gave me the partially completed project, when I went to buy some yarn during her closing down sale. I was buying some of the same yarn for another crochet project, another blanket. Seeing a way to ensure the store project is finished, she gave me the partially made blanket.
I knew when I went in that the store was closing down. I'm actually quite sad about it, as it's the main place I've bought all my yarn, knitting and crochet tools from for the last 12 years. There isn't anywhere else as good as this store, in my local area. They're closing because the landlord is awful.
I don't like buying online much. I like to see yarn before I buy it, because I tend to find projects that suit it rather than have a project in mind first.
Sock knitting update
After a whoopsie and having to restart (I was only 8 rows in), I'm now more used to the process of working across DPNs.
I've two rows left before I start working on the leg. Will be slowly doing some stitch decreases when I do start on the legs, across multiple rows.
So, trying out sock knitting
Okay, so I am using DPNs for now, and if this whole endeavour is successful I will try to learn with circulars as well.
But I am working from a beginner pattern that my local wool shop provides for free if you buy any sock wool and want to learn. (The shop owner was really helpful, and adjusted the pattern for me to account for my chunky calves.)
I'm using some West Yorkshire Spinners 4 ply for this. I like how bright it is.
One last round of Xmas creations...
Sssh, I'm not going to the other side as my main fibre craft, but I did crochet some star decorations over the festive period.
The pattern involved was using US crochet, so made my brain hurt at times as I originally learned British (what with being a Brit), but seeing as how I'd not done any crochet in over a year, I figure these are good attempts.
I was switching between some DK wool and some thin cotton stuff the pattern originally said to use. DK was easier to work in.
In 2026, I'm hoping to do the odd bit of crochet here and there so I'm not completely relearning how to crochet each time I do it.
The DK was leftover from making hats for kiddo.
Hat I knitted for my husband
Only one person got a knitted Xmas gift from me, knitted just in time, my husband. I've not knitted a hat for him for some years and these days he's bald, so appreciates a good hat.
It would have been a little less last minute if hadn't been for reworking kiddo's hat.
Fourth hat is a go!
Currently, I'm using leftover wool from a baby blanket I knitted for my niece nearly six years ago. It's a Stylecraft chunky of some description. It's going to be all in 2x2 rib and I'm not following a specific pattern, just designing it based on some math from a guide and a video I watched on how to do decreases in 2x2 rib.
I plan to knit the main body long enough so that the hat can double up around my daughter's ears and the rest of her head to keep her extra warm.
And it's done
Made a pom-pom to go with this one as well. Hat is less yellow than my living room lamps are making it.
Ended up having to redo this hat as it was too short. Just finished.
I think it's going to last kiddo a while 😅
Fifth hat is getting there
Had two DnD (Dungeons and Dragons) games over the weekend, and as I often use knitting to help me stay awake, made some really good progress on this fifth hay. I've no idea the brand of this particular chunky wool (high chance of it being some old Stylecraft or maybe JC Brett), it's leftover from a hat project for a friend from several years ago.
With autumn (Fall) very much in evidence now, and our first autumn storm having hit us this weekend, I'm glad I'm nearly done with these hats. Need to get some name labels in them for kiddo.
This hat is using some 2x2 rib for the brim, and broken rib for the body, all in the round. I'm experimenting, so it's not based on any pattern. Just math, trial and error are being used here.
And it's done!
Fifth hat is done for kiddo. I think if I was knit this again there are several things I would do differently:
Knit it a bit longer (maybe 5cm longer) before decreases for shaping.
Go for a slower rate of decreases.
Either stick with 2x2 rib or broken rib, and not do both.
And never base the main body of a hat on 62 stitches as it has too few factors to then make decreases a sane thing to figure out.
Related to that last point, KnitGrammer's decreases calculator helped me to regain some sanity during the last part of things. It wasn't as elegant as the CDD decreases I was trying to do, but at least the k2tog combos suggested kept things neat and tidy.
At least kiddo will look pretty fab in it.

Only just read about the $800 limit being removed for US bound parcels.
I'm sorry US crafters are having to go through something that's disrupting hobbies and livelihoods that help make life a bit nicer.
Third hat is a go!
I wanted to give my hands a rest from using circulars, but as so many free patterns use them and I didn't want to translate to straights, I'm using a tutorial to just make a hat based on kiddo's head size, wool type and swatch with preferred needles.
Still in the West Yorkshire Spinners DK, but the hot pink this time.
Next hat after this, I'm going to dig out some chunky I've got left over so that I can make a warmer hat or two.
And that's a wrap on the third hat.
The light in my living room tonight is not helping to bring out the colour, but it is a hot pink.
I've got enough left of the rose and hot pink, I could knit a stripey hat for kiddo but I've dug out some chunky I had left over from a baby blanket project for another family member and I'm going to work on putting together a hat with that instead.
