alas, it seems that I have been born

into the most ridiculous position

of any human:

The American tourist

My sticky Dorito-stained fingers

throw another wad of cash

in the poor newly-rich shopkeeper’s face.

my mouth says through the crunch:

“I love Mexican food”

while my body strikes a pose

mock-leaning against a chapel.

I am in Spain.

the tree who has seen everything

doesn’t spend time

looking at its own branches.

the tree instead has seen everything!

it has seen the roads take root,

and it has seen skyscrapers blossom

with the beauty of engineering.

but what of the fertilizer?

the tree cannot look down.

its trunk does not have joints,

but the tree can think

of the roads and skyscrapers

from where it takes root and blossoms

in its horrible way

I love the feeling of becoming weightless

when I enter that thin veil of water

that gently sways in the tub

giving me my only warmth

when the water clings to me

I miss it as it drips away

my body is heavy again

and I hate how my clean sweater

fits me just right
