(*) for the past six months, i’ve thought about this the most. about happiness. my disposition in and of itself tends to torment me. for people like me, it isn’t easy to be happy. though on the other hand, it is possible to grow. so, now, you want to grow but also be happy, too. jonghyun: a few years ago, i was crying and whining at my mom and my sister. when i was really drunk. i asked my mom and sister …, it wasn’t long after we’d moved. i asked them if they were happy. after i’d been drinking, i woke up my entire family who’d already gone to bed, like some ahjussi. it had been my number one goal in life, you know, to make my mom and sister happy. they both woke up and told me they were happy. but i was so jealous at the fact that they were able to reply that they were, indeed, happy. because it wasn’t like that for me. i told them while sobbing, i want to be happy too. then i felt like i’d done my mom and sister wrong. but ever since then, i started contemplating about happiness. for about six months, i pondered specifically over what i would need to do in order to become happy. i think that time of transformation has come. i think i need to become happy, now. i must become happy. i am going to be happy. Q63: Out of the places you haven’t been to, where do you want to travel to? A: I want to go to Kyoto! My friends that have already been to Japan also recommended me to visit Kyoto.

Q64: The essential item that helps you to relax when you’re overseas?  A: Pilates practice DVD. Before I sleep, I’d watch it and stretch along in the hotel room.

Q65: What’s your catchphrase?  A: “Actually~”, I think I say it to get some time to organize my thoughts in my head. It’s kind of like the Japanese phrase ‘あの’ (uh, umm/ that).

Q77: Recently, what’s your small worries or questions? A: My worry is that the webtoons online is so interesting, sometimes I’d carelessly stay up the whole night reading them on my phone. I have a question for Jungkook and Taehyung. Jungkook changes his hobby about every month. And Taehyung, the way he uses some words is so unbelievable, I often get shocked by the way he expresses with some of the words because I’ve never heard them being used in that way (laughs). 

Q78: The subject that you were worst at during your school days? A: Mathematics and English. I only attended private tuitions for those two subjects. I kind of got used to English. But I didn’t improve much in mathematics (laughs). 

Q79: Recently, what makes you happy the most offstage?  A: Riding bicycle along the Hangang River on a fine day. Facing the comfy wind while riding the bike really makes me happy.

Q80: When you’re eating outside, what do you eat often?  A: Meat. No, it’s Mr Meat (laughs)! I like to cut it thinly with the knife~ I like to grill the thin slices of meat and eat it.

Q81: Recently learnt Japanese phrase that you want to try (to say it)?  A: ‘木漏れ日’ (sunbeams shining through branches of trees). It’s sunshine but it’s not shining not strong sunshine, shining through gently seems really beautiful. 

Q82: What do you want to learn now?  A: Classical guitar! In terms of the original sounds, I think the instrument itself is pure and frank. 

Q83: If you could only take one item with you to a deserted island, what would you take? A: Taehyung. Instead of saying that I rely on him… it’s more like if he’s there, he won’t back down (laughs). And beach sandals/ flip-flops are nice too, the beach must be really hot. (‘ビーサン’ flip-flops sounds like ‘Vさん’ V-ssi.)

Q84: Who do you respect? A: My father. I have never seen my parents argue with each other. When I told him that I want to make music, he encouraged me: “go for it”. 

Q85: Your memory of your birthday in 2017?  A: On the day, we made a guest appearance on The Chainsmokers’ (who collaborated with us for ‘Best Of Me’) Seoul concert. I was surrounded by important people, so it feels like I had the biggest birthday party in my life!

Q86: Which BTS song is the most memorable for you? A: ‘Danger’ which was released in 2014 in Korea. It’s the period where BTS was struggling to move upward as a group. The choreography is really cool, it’s a must-watch.

Q87: As a leader, what do you is the most important? A: Everything with the members. Because we have the memories of overcoming those tough days together, I feel that we can continue to think of each other and move forward together.

Of Endings and Beginnings

Summer.

It’s almost seven. Again, I have to endure the agony of a morning buzz—an overcrowded subway, the stinking smell of garbage (and whatnots) on Aegis Alley, the unresolved traffic on The Avenue. Great! I can imagine my boss handing me my second memo (not mentioning the shame for posting your portrait on Loyal Latecomers’ Bulletin). I’ve always dreamt of a ‘24 hour thug-life experience’, but hell no. That could be the meanest piece-of -heaven a worker could have. But above all the misfits I break into, travel is always my best buddy. I could even stand for hours provided with a misty window. Forget the music; the scenery alone makes it perfect. Travels help me stop time the way I wanted it to. 

Stop, but never rewind.

If you’d ask, Phil. Yes, I still remember that day.

“Us against the world, right?” you blurted out, handing me the pair of your ring candy. You were 18, I was 12. At first, I thought that wasn’t for keeps—just a child’s play, having our skin sun-kissed, playing by the shadows on walls by night. After class, I’d see you standing by the gates—casual ripped jeans, navy kicks. Tanned skin, a smile curving on your lips as I come nearer. “Here comes mi’lady,” you’d say, stealing my knapsack as we doze off to the school bus. Yeah, those are feel good memories. I could still recall your fondness of Marvel comics and recording voices on a mix tape to exchange after a couple of weeks.

You’re my partner in crime. You told me countless adventures that no one dared to freely speak about. For the record (as far as I could remember), my name has been listed couple of times in the noisy list. We ditched classes to play ball outside. Oh, Phil, what can I do for you—what is it in your name that even the stars agree with an ethereal beauty? The kind of poet who speaks reckless but has the wits of an ingenious man. At first, I thought it was an act. Then I knew it was all real. Maybe, I thought so.

You were 21, I am 18. You said those words on a summer’s day. “We fall like leaves…” The moment I heard ‘unknown’, fear crept on me. Of course, people don’t come and stay forever, we’d eventually keep moving. Adventures are my short travels. “No one seems to master a new found thing, Anna. You’ll get there soon.” Years and years, I waited. I was 19 when I finally understood one more thing: adventures never end. I was so stupid enough to stay on the same tracks when you’ve already moved to another. Bit by bit, running away become my sweetest escape from all heartaches. 

You were 26, I am 22. Here I am, looking by the misty windows when a stranger handed me a box of tissues. “Yeah, The Passenger. Their music are absolute tearjerkers.” “Thanks,” I was about to grab one but I then met his cold eyes—who, in a matter of seconds, shattered me in thousands.

“Is there something wrong?” “Well, nothing. I’m sorry.”

“12 midnight, Aegis Alley. June 5, 2012.”

Wait—what?

“I’ve waited for you, Anna. I have saved up my penny to take you away from here. But it seems that my letter didn’t reach yours.” “What are you talking about?” “I also placed a letter from the last mixtape I gave you.” giving half a smile. “My, what have I been saying? We just met again. It’s an unappropriate celebration.”

I was about to cry, but I already felt numb. I gave up. “I’m… sorry, Phil.” “I’m… dying to see you. I still waited.” “It’s okay. I mean, it could be for the better.”

For the last time, I stared at you the longest.

On your neck you wore a cross.

A cassock.
