First (real) bake since having a baby. As much as I wanted to attempt another rainbow roll cake, I needed a little simpler bake with the little one, so funfetti roll for Queer book club it was!
Oh wait I forgot to say HAPPY PRIDE!!! 🏳️🌈

"It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing. That was love, wasn't it? It wasn't just a quick drop -- it was falling, over and over again, for your person. It was falling as they became new people."
The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston
I might be over this book.... sometime this year. Maybe.
I loved the Dead Romantics and was thrilled to find this book. Beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I definitely have a book hangover from it.
Happy (almost) Pi(e) day! To celebrate I decided to finally take on attempting Iwan's grandfather's lemon pie from The Seven Year Slip. This book still has such a hold on me, and I wanted to honor this beautiful story with a pie.
After much debating and rereading the chapter where Iwan first makes this for Clementine, I decided to go with the method of essentially making a key lime pie with lemon juice and zest instead of lime, and then topping it with a lemon whipped cream.
Someone remind me to take a slice picture and share it later 🍋🥧
Taking another bite, the sweetness of the cream dancing with the tart lemon, making my teeth curl in delight, I said, "Ah, you're talking about a perfect meal again."
"It all comes full circle," he replied, the edges of his mouth twisting up in a smile. "Universal truths in butter. Secrets folded into the dough. Poetry in the spices. Romance in a chocolate. Love in a lemon pie."
-The Seven Year Slip, Ashley Poston
Reminding myself that this pie was supposed to be a little different every time so I can keep playing with it but also, it's pretty darn good.
Also also no one should give Iwan crap for not being able to make a meringue, egg whites are notoriously difficult to work with and my boy grew up in the (humid) South.

Coworker's birthday is today but since she's getting married in April and is concerned about her sugar intake, I went with a fruit tart for her celebration.
A double batch of pumking bread with maple cream cheese frosting for all the holiday parties this weekend
It's a tried and true recipe for me and I like it better than banana bread, because I can keep all the ingredients for it on hand and it's fast to make. The full loaf (as opposed to the mini loaves) takes about 45 min to bake--check with toothpick. For the icing, cream together everything but the powdered sugar first, then add the sugar slowly. and it is important that the butter and cream cheese are room temp and soft, they won't combine right if they're chilled.
My first ever Yule Log cake! I hope it tastes as good as it looks because I'm so proud of how it came out.
*le sigh* I had such high hopes for this one... but alas, I was Icarus, flying to close to the sun (read: I got cocky an attempted to assemble the cake in a different order than the recipe called for, and thus the layers were sliding around and the raspberry filling got all in th icing).
I did my best to cover it but the back still looked like a murder.
But hubby says it's his favorite cake I've ever made, so I will be attempting again (and not being dumb about it).
So. Much. Baking!
More holiday baaaaakkkkiiinnngggg
Holiday baking is upon us.
First up: my sister has wanted me to make one of my Swiss roll cakes but trans flag colors for over a year now, finally did for her birthday this year.
Late night apple pie baking 🍏 🥧
Also shout out to my hubby's food photography skills for that after photo 📸
I've made this chocolate cake before and if you're a fan of chocolate, it never misses.
Today a coworker tried it for the first time and he told me he would kill someone for me to have this cake, so good to know I've got that in my back pocket.
Made some stickers for when you just gotta express yourself with a failed cake
Lemon pie because I reread The Seven Year Slip this weekend 🍋 🥧
Describing the woman as bafflingly at peace with the simple enjoyment of her hobby, confused sources confirmed Monday that a local fucking weirdo was really good at something that she wasn’t trying to capitalize on. “She’s so good at this it could be a secondary source of income, and yet she seems to have absolutely no interest in monetizing her skill, so what’s the point?” area man Brandon O’Brien said after watching his total oddball neighbor craft yet another dazzling wood sculpture that she would either display in her home or give away for free, even though it could fetch her $1,000, easy.
