Royal Choas OCs and colour association.
So for my Royal Chaos AU, colour is a very important thing. The colours you wear are linked to your identity and who you support.
This is mostly seen with the Consorts. In my version of Royal Chaos, there can only be up four Main Consort and one Noble Consort. Each one has a main colour that they are associated with. And the rule is the most favoured gets to choose their colour first. So, Noble Consort Nian got to choose Purple and then the other Consort got to choose.
Here's where the drama kicks in. In my AU, Dai Jia was married to Emperor Mu before he became Emperor so when he ascended the throne, she was meant to be the second most important person behind the Empress. And originally, she chose Blue. Only for Consort Peace to arrive and take Dai Jia places as well as her colour. Basically rubbing it in that the Emperor likes Consort Peace more than Dai Jia not only to her but the whole court as well. This leads to Dai Jia having to wear red, a colour she believes is unflattering in her. ( Of course later, Consort Nian arrives and takes the second place spot away for Consort Peace, but that is another story)
As for lower ranked members, the colours they wear can help signify who they support. For instance Song Yuanlu wears purple accents as she wants to work for Consort Nian. Another example would be the female MC and Wen Ruyan wearing similar colour to highlight their closeness and support for eachother. Although this isn't a rigged rule as often members wanted to hide their allegiances to keep their options open.
Maids also wear their ladies colours, but more discreetly. Maids of lower ranked ladies have to wear the traditional uniform with an accessory of some kind to show they work for a consort. Then the higher up the Lady is, the more decrotive the maids can be. For instance, as a Junior Lady, Ye Xiu swapped out the yellow of the maid's outfit for orange. But when she became a Noble Lady, her maids' outfits would be mainly orange with red flower embroidery. It's essentially a way for the women to display their power and status.
