You Got Your Child Back.

The portal closed behind you. You held your child, weeping uncontrollably, while she simply stared with clear, innocent eyes. She didn't understand what had happened, nor did she know you had almost sold her to pay your debts. She just looked at you, loving you with the whole-hearted devotion a child has for a parent. Choked with emotion, you tore a strip from your hem and bandaged her severed little finger.It was all over. Nothing would ever part you again.

Yet, you still had to pay the price for your folly—managing household expenses, caring for your child, and struggling to repay the massive debt you'd accrued. You mortgaged everything you could and moved from place to place with her in tow. For a meager fee, you waded through three days of foul, putrid sewer water just to find a client's lost silver pocket watch. You comforted yourself with the thought that it was an heirloom from the client's grandmother, at least it had sentimental value. You could have cleared the debt entirely by giving her up, but you chose to keep her instead—adding a burden and another mouth to feed.

Did you ever regret it?

Maybe.

But then you'd come home to find her having a tea party with a chipped, outdated, but meticulously clean doll. A fierce sense of ownership had led her to use markers to scrawl the newly learned letters of her name on all her toys and prized possessions. Hearing the doorknob turn, she'd put down her toy, her eyes sparkling, and run to you, full of anticipation. You'd reach to hug her, but she'd just giggle and dodge away. You'd look down and find she had already triumphantly signed the initials "A.D." on your right hand in a grand, sweeping gesture. You couldn't help but laugh.

Everything was fine. You wouldn't trade this child for the world.

The only downside was that Anna thought being a detective was the coolest job ever and wanted to be one just like you when she grew up. And you couldn't help but worry if she'd be able to find enough cases to make a living for herself.
