I’ve seen people dislike the way Steven treated Spinel during the movie and I understand that. He was often distracted by other things and didn’t pay attention to her and her feelings.
Notably, during the song Found, Steven unintentionally kept a distance from Spinel by moving his hand away from hers, turning his back on her and walking away from her. During the song, Spinel grew quickly attached to Steven as a person who finally treated her with kindness. Unaware, Steven encouraged her to find someone, his hands reaching towards the space. It seems he didn’t think that person would be him.
Throughout the movie, Steven was just so stressed out, tired, busy and worried about his friends, himself and the planet. His past experiences came back to haunt him. This whole situation that happened without a warning was taking a toll on him and he didn’t have all the energy and time for Spinel. And maybe Spinel and Steven just aren’t very compatible (older Steven has a bit different vibe than younger Steven). But in the end he helped Spinel take the first steps.
Personally, I liked this. Steven is a kind and gentle person, but he isn’t perfect. To me, this made him feel much more human as a character.
I feel like the three of them shared one brain cell throughout the whole movie
